This match is firmly in Australia's favour after Pattinson's over there. 3 wicket maiden taking out 3 key players (Guptill, Williamson and Taylor). He's 4/1 off 5 overs.

Can't get these two out. They're putting on another big partnership. Vettori must average close to 50 against us. You'd think after all this time we might have an insight into how to get him out. Mike Hussey now having a bowl.

Great to see Patto come back after going for 4.3/over in the first innings to sweep the top order for less than 2.5/over.

Good on him, a few good hauls by these young blokes will create competition for spots. Bowling stocks are looking promising once again.

Yoss, I read a stat the other day on Wikipedia that Vettori took 47 Tests to attain his first 1,000 runs at an average of 17.2\. His second thousand runs came in 22 Tests at 42.5.

His Test stats are current until 25th November 2011, and it's listed he has played 106 Tests and scored 4,328 runs and counting the amount of innings he has been not out, his average since hitting his second thousand runs works out to be around 41 runs per innings. Definitely a handy player to have batting at the lead of the tail.

His batting looks very solid these days. That's a big improvement - I'd like to see who they've played in those 22 tests. They seem to play Bangladesh and Zimbabwe a lot. But as I said, he often seems to stick around against us.

I read a few days ago that he said he was embarrassed with his average early in his career, and I remember early in his career, commentators saying he fancies himself as a batsman, I remember chuckling to myself because in his early days he really did shuffle around the crease and look very uncomfortable. He still moves a bit now but it looks very controlled and because he is unorthodox, plays wristy, dinky sort of shots and scores all around the wicket, he is hard to get out.
In my opinion he has been NZ's best batsman for the last 5 or so years.

Hughes must be living on borrowed time now

He needs runs and consistent scores. No point making a decent score every 6 or 7 innings and under 20 at other times. That shot in the 2nd innings was rubbish, Dropped the ball before and then he hits one straight at gully as if it was catching practice. Sure its easy to say it didn't matter but there was no need for it and it demonstrated the poor shot selection he has at times.

The thing that may save Hughes is most of the competition for spots is in the middle order. There's talk of dropping Watson down the order, as well as Marsh, Khawaja, Hussey, Ponting and Clarke, basically 6 blokes fighting for 4 spots. My ideal batting line up for India is

Watson
Marsh
Khawaja
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin

I'd consider giving one of Ponting/Hussey (whoever perform worse) a tap on the shoulder after this season and drop one of Watson/Marsh down the order, then after 12 months move the other one on, and bring in some new openers. I don't think Hughes is the answer yet (he's a little immature) but I still have some hope for Warner. Another solution is to have Hussey open the batting. Haddin should also be moved on in the near future. By 2013-14 our test side should look something like

Warner
Hughes?-not sure on this one
Khawaja
Watson
Clarke
Marsh
Wade
Cummins
Pattinson
Siddle/Cutting/Johnson/Copeland????? this one is still open
Lyon

MM Totally agree with Hussey opening the batting If it hadn't been for the fact we had Hayden and Langer he would of become an opener Still see Marsh opening the batting as well
Possibly even Khawaja as an opener

The way Hughes has been going, Khawaja is pretty much acting like an opener now! The Aus selectors need to realise we don't have Matt Hayden anymore so we're not going to be 0-130 at lunch. I'd rather be 0-70 or 1-70 than the 4-100 we seem to be most games these days. Problem with M Hussey is the guy is 36 which IMO is a little late to be shifting around when we'd be better off looking long-term.

That was my point Yoss Khawaja he is in so early anyway ,plus I am of the believe anyone who can bat 3 has the characteristics to be able to open the batting as well
