His defensive reads are shocking
15m in field then having to turn around and chase a sydney harbour bridge pass..

Im not sure when he will learn if he hasnt so far under 4 coaches

Again Nofoaluma has his issues sure..Why is Nofoaluma 15m infield… well...He is following the structure of the right side defence...which still seems to have no idea how to count numbers or slide effectively...If Nofoaluma stayed on the touchline there would still be that 15m gap except it would be between him and his centre...Teams just collapse our middle and the edges suffer...

Defence is about working together as units not individuals...So far the last 4 Coaches haven't been able to drill that into them...

It is Cleary's biggest challenge...

Couldn't agree more. What's the point on staying on your man and leaving the centre and 5/8 unopposed to walk it in. Yes he does have bad reads but you can't stay on your man when it's 3 on 1 you need to attempt to shut the move down early.

He is a good player, not origin standard yet but fix his defense and he will be in the mix. He is a better player than some previous NSW wingers i.e McManus, Turner , wolfman williams.

Watching games at the stadium really shows you this. Most of the time he is left in no mans land due to the jnside players leaving him short. We seen against brisbane when they numbered up well he took oates into touch.

I like Nofoa for us and think he is a solid winger. He does have defensive issue but at least he knows it and wants to improve. Will he ever play origin? No

I love how ted is an authority on origin now LMAO he was a dud in game 3 last year and is thoroughly undeserving of his spot for game 1 this year.
Dont break a jaw you buck toothed gimp.

Starting to get worried up there are we?

If the blues dont win this year with JT, Slater, GI and Scott missing than they should give it away. Qlds only chance is that Hayne, Dugan and Ted dont gel and get in each others road in both attack and defence. Saying that, the blues bench has me worried.

You can bet money JT will play the second two games along with Slater after they lose the first game.
However, can't say I'm a fan of our hooker who is ok but no match winner and a half that hasn't been able to prove himself after heaps of chances.

The part most notable in this article was this comment…..

"We changed a bit of the defence in the pre-season, it didn’t work, and it’s hard to change something you’ve practised in the pre-season.

Ivan (Cleary) and myself and the coaching staff are working hard to improve that."

Finally the problem has been identified and being worked on. The sad fact is it just shows how bad Jason Taylor was as coach.

At least wait 'til after the game to make excuses.

Both teams will have 17 players - there are no excuses. You have accepted none from us over the last 10 years.

I've said it before, what you say is sometimes true, other times it is not.

There are times Nofo is 15m infield for no apparent reason, other than he can't help himself to charge in and the offence knows it. He's also fairly short which helps with the lob passes.

On the other hand he's had a few intercepts this year for precisely that reason too, he's right in the defensive line but inside his winger.

Top one he comes in way too far, ends up in front of Idris. Second there is a 10 m channel on his inside (we talk about going with your inside men) and he is 5 m behind them. Third one costly missed tackle on Peachey, he was in the right spot and made huge body contact, but didn't wrap.

He gets beaten on the outside by the pass here, should not have because Peachey was his man numbered.

Finally, a sensible comment.

Nofoaluma has just been following the game plan. If he hadn't been, he would have been dropped long ago.

Unfortunately with tight defense in the middle, it leaves space out wide and wingers end up looking bad.

To his credit, Taylor's defense did reduce leaks in the middle of the park. But left us short out wide.

I've missed something, why is it hard to change a defensive pattern? I get that offence is hard to change because it's run at very high speed, lots of bodies in motion and passes to throw/stick.

But defence is just about numbering and reading. If the coach instructs you to go up and in, you all do that. If the coach instructs you to slide, you do that. If he asks you to switch styles mid-game, do it. Why do you need a full pre-season of defending to all be playing with the same style?

Reality is Tigers get beaten by the same plays regularly on the edges. Clearly switched the style and it started working, but they've fallen back into old habits recently. Sure the centre pairings have not been consistent but a good side covers for that.

Of the 52 (yikes) tries we've conceded this year, 17 LHS, 13 middle, 22 RHS.

Though Silentio has a point, of the 13 middle tries Tigers have conceded this year, 7 have come in the last 3 rounds.

Majority of TRIES may be scored down our edges but this is because teams collapse our middle with ease inside our 20…

Still hasn't been addressed ...Lets blame the wingers...

Nofa certainly has defensive problems.
This isn't an excuse by any means , but his defence, when the right side had one player there who couldn't tackle , especially one off near the line, and a log who can't move sideways even if his life depended on it, certainly wasn't helped at all

Give him an opportunity to learn, he has just signed a 4 year contract. Maybe we should also offer Kev a similar deal

No excuses from me. QLD are the underdogs and rightfully so….however the great unknown is how this gaggle of egotistical nonces from the blues will gel. Im picking 2-1 to the men from the north.

LOL
"Tedesco told Nofoaluma he needed to start giving some serious thought to pulling on the Blues jersey."

Did you hear that David? Sage advice from the veteran blue!

He is such a tool of a person isn't he.

As for Nofo. He is a legend. He plays with passion, can score tries, makes heaps of busts for us and hits it up as good as anyone on the first hit-up.

His defence is ordinary but as stated above he hasn't had good defensive players around him. He needs support.

David Nofoaluma enjoyed a remarkable season for someone who shouldn't have played beyond round seven.

It was then that he suffered an injury that required groin and hernia surgeries. Rather than get the operations done straight away – a move that would have effectively ended his year – the Wests Tigers winger played on because there was no one to fill his void.

It's not like Nofoaluma was playing for a contract – he had signed a lucrative four-year extension just weeks before suffering a sports hernia – but he played through the pain anyway.

"It gives you lower abdomen pain, and it takes away your power," Nofoaluma said.

"I tell you what, I don't want to experience it again.

"It took a bit out of me. I couldn't do certain movements. When I was tackled, it was hard for me to do a crunch. Even when sitting up, I couldn't get out of bed; I had to roll out.

"I've relied on some tablets the club gave me to help with the pain, but it didn't do much. I struggled all year."

It's been two months since Nofoaluma underwent the procedure and he is now able to participate in "90 per cent" of the Tigers' preseason. While South Sydney's Adam Reynolds suffered a similar injury and just had his hernia operated on, the Wests Tigers flanker opted to also have surgery on his groin to ensure there were no related issues.

"I could have [had the operation straight away], but there was no depth in the team, and Ivan [Cleary] needed me out there," he said.

"He said to stick it out until the end of the year and go from there."

When Nofoaluma committed to the Tigers in April, he was the first high-profile player to do so. At the time, the future of the "Big Four" of Aaron Woods, Mitchell Moses, James Tedesco and Luke Brooks was uncertain, and halfback Brooks would prove the only member to stay put.

Within weeks, the joint-venture outfit embarked on a signing spree that netted Josh Reynolds, Ben Matulino, Russell Packer, Chris McQueen, Benji Marshall, Robbie Rochow, Mahe Fonua, Taane Milne and Corey Thompson to vindicate Nofoaluma's decision.

"When I was signing, there was all that drama happening and I was nervous with [possibly] four good players about to leave," he said.

"What would happen to the Wests Tigers in 2018? But once I signed I was happy. It made me think afterwards, 'What's next for the club?', and a week later we signed Ben Matulino, and that gave me a bit of happiness; then we signed Packer two weeks after that, and it made me even happier.

"Then Reynolds come in, and I thought, 'We've got a good chance next year', and there were signings after signings.

"I couldn't wait to come to preseason to meet them all, and since they've been here they've slotted in well. There's a whole new vibe around here."

Nofoaluma's injury prevented him from again representing Samoa at the World Cup. It remains to be seen which will be his next representative jersey. The 24-year-old is eligible for NSW, Australia, Samoa and New Zealand, and is yet to decide his priority.

"[It's] always a goal to make the rep teams," he said.

"The good thing about me is I'm eligible for Samoa, New Zealand and Australia. It would be nice to play for NSW, but you have to think how many players are there and will stay there. If they play well, it's a tough one.

"I've had a think about it with my family and missus about possibly trying out for New Zealand, but we'll see how the year goes."
