Matt Utai did a lot of good things for us - but none better than this:

Nothing was better than his snap pass for Marshall to score.

Im really glad to have Jamal with us, plenty of upside and I think he is definitely a centre, not the workrate for back rower.

BUT….......I have some concern that the small amount of success taht we have had this year has been based on speed. Jamal is going to slow our backline down a fair bit. For this reason I would really like to see Simona stay at left centre and someone else fill in the left wing position.

Be very careful using the word structure…

Once again 18 pts is too many..12 ppg is the benchmark ..you achieve that Goal ythe team will be at the pointy end off the season..

18 will be a massive effort for us and would be sufficient.

Last 12 years the average points conceded per game for the Top 8:
22.12 (2005), 19.96, 18.70, 17.66, 18.55, 19.73, 16.14, 17.92, 16.79, 17.36, 17.25, 17.49 (2016).

In the same period, the points conceded per game of the 8th placed side: 26.33 (Manly 2005), 22.88, 21.13, 20.04, 19.92, 22.71, 19.83, 20.92, 21.29, 21.08, 23.08, 20.70 (Titans 2016).

26 rounds, but byes make it 24 games, so 320 max.

If we are extremely lucky it would be 330k to 340k an extra 10k - 20k for the finals matches. Not exactly a bargain buy but if it works that is fine,if it dosent its a pricey dud.
Lets hope for all our sakes that he makes it a winner for the club

I don't know, $330K for a centre who plays the entire season is a pretty good deal.

From my point of view, if he plays close to every game next year, he will have had a successful reintroduction to rugby league, and Idris in the $300s is a pretty good deal. If he is bust, we don't pay anything like that and move on.

For a guy who exactly fits the bill for our needs - strong, tall, fast laterally, good defender, it's worth it. The $200K sign-on was also probably the clincher, I am sure other clubs were sniffing around.

I kinda think the opposite. We have plenty of speed and it's nice to have muscle out wide, especially as our back rowers are not exactly explosive. And, I think he has more toe than you realise.

Totally agree about Simona.

Although he has had a year or so out of the game, he did play SOO and he played for Australia so a price tag of 350g a year is probably a fair. When you think we have players earning a lot more who are still on P plates I do not see it as excessive and just a case of the tele crap trying to drum up a headline

I am not suprised at the amount either and we needed to get a large body with a bit of strike power from somewhere. Pascoe would also be well aware of the amount Gould and the panthers thought he was worth.

I don't think 350 including match incentives is a bad deal. When you have incentives you have to pay above the odds.

I was hoping the deal would have been more like 200k for 2017, with a $350 option in clubs favour 2018\. New deal from 2019 onwards.

Speed outside muscle is a great combo. The muscle will draw defenders and leave holes on either side that full backs like running through. We didn't have that in our game last year.

Wow another attacking play.

With no dummy half play we don't run plays back through the ruck anymore where the full back runs at the whole between the 9 and 7, at least this will give teddy some fun hitting holes.

Teddy had to create his own gaps with line and tackle breaks. That's one of the reasons he has such a high tackle break average. IMO

I'm neither here nor there about Jamal at the moment - so was pleased to see the incentives in his contract.
Major risk - but could be the buy of the season. Just not sure we are the club that should be taking that risk. If we were in a stronger position with some other good signings - fine.
Can understand why Cronulla and Canberra have taken risks with Taylor and Williams - both have strong rosters and good depth where those players will have to work hard to get a spot.
Don't see that for Jamal pretty much offloading players to make way for him. As a player who has previously showed a lack of committment to the game and his club - I hope for our sake we have new and improved Jamal.

I think he still has a point to prove to the competition in general so I can't see him sitting back on his heels. Hopefully he will also want to prove a point to the young guns at WT.

So long as he is dropped to NSW Cup if he is not performing. It will hurt him knowing that every game he plays in reggies is costing him $5000\. He wont be there for long !

$200k base is still too high really imo. For a guy who's been out of the game for a fair while with attitude problems and a major injury it's still a fair risk.

Would have thought a lower base and a higher match bonus would have been more in line with our cap situation.

If he lives up to the hype then he will be well worth the base salary + incentives, but we will be much wiser after he has played half a dozen games for the Tigers to judge his true value to the team.

I think it's attributed to his running style as well. He runs sideways so much and bounces off of tackles.

Couldn't agree more. He still has alot to prove.

Yup

19.00 (2005 Eels), 16.83 (Storm), 11.54 (Storm), 11.75 (Storm), 13.71 (Saints), 12.46 (Saints), 12.83 (Storm), 15.38 (Dogs), 13.54 (Roosters), 16.04 (Roosters), 12.50 (Roosters), 12.58 (2016 Storm)
\
\
Shows us a few things - on average the average points conceded for the top 8 sides, and consistently for the minor premiers, decreased rapidly between 2005-2007\. Also that the MPs are normally 3-5 points better per game conceded than the Top 8 average - but that's less than a converted try.

Also, bearing in mind that Tigers win 43.67% of all matches (current to mid 2016, I didn't update back half of the year), that win rate doubles when we concede 16 or less points in a game. In other words, we have won 109/128 (85.16%) of games where we've conceded 16 points or less. We are 30/30 when conceding 6 points or less.
