Loss of the magpie

I started out following the Balmain Tigers and when they merged I didn't like the name at all, but as time went on I just didn't care any more because at least I still had my team in the competition unlike the North Sydney Bears, Newtown Jets, Illawarra steelers( I bet the steelers fans are just as dirty, they don't even have their mascot) just to name a few. If we hadn't of merged( like the Rabbits) I don't think that we would have come back into comp with people power. So I think that everyone who has a problem with the name or that people drop a word off it here and there need to take a big deep breath and realize just how lucky we are to have a team at all.

How can people not be entertained by these threads? great banter

To be honest I get fast tired whenever this topic resurfaces, because it is subjective issue and as a result there is no right "answer."

I am of the opinion that we're the Wests Tigers now, and that is the team I support first and foremost, but I don't begrudge those who still have a firm attachment to the Magpies or Balmain. I would hazard a guess that we have many members who are in their forties and onwards whom have spent a large part of their lives following the previous incarnations of WT and the merger would have been a fairly bitter (and sometimes painful,) pill to swallow, and will obviously take a little more time to accept. I have no doubt that 99.9%, if not all, people on this forum support WT fully, otherwise they would not post here. Some people out there may feel that the team they identified with is being eroded and therefore are voicing their concerns. It's all part of the parochialism that the game was built on.

Commentators can call clubs by name or mascot, I for the life of me don't know how it bothers some people, it's naturally comes to them and they say it. With former greats, we have our own, Skandalis and O'Neill just to name a couple. Blocker is a former great of a former club, never has been and never will be a Wests Magpies or Wests Tigers legend. Same applies to Tommy, never was and never will a Balmain Tigers or Wests Tigers legend.
This statues is applied to them by the media, which again we can't control, but for all of us former Wests and Balmain supporters, the tit for tat will always continue as long as someone bags the other. To solve the problem once and for all the only solution would be to change the name, mascot and colors, but then once again the same argument will pop up, that we have tossed away our history. That's why it's important for fans from both sides of the merger having a say without getting shot down.

The quicker these relic clubs die the better.

They will never die my friend. Both Western Suburbs and Balmain will liveth forever. Balmain Leagues Club will rise from the ashes when the new complex is built and will become a very sustantial holding in time.

I get what youre saying CB….but the fact the very first line in this thread is incorrect, factually innacurate....tells me all I need to know.

Wests since 1908\. The Wests branding carries more tradition than the Magpie.

The team is what you believe it to be. The only opinion that matters is your own. For me, when people call the joint venture the Tigers they are talking about the Wests variety. The other variety doesn't exist beyond SG Ball.

Carry on… :sign:

i could say the same thing about Balmain… You have WESTS as the main title..

i think people need to get over the fact of the merger, and accept the WESTS TIGERS as a team...The Western Suberbs are no more, the Balmain Tigers are no more.. if you are finding it hard to follow the team over something so small, i think u need to get a new deck of cards and deal with them

This. I for one am thankful Balmain didn't go the same way as the Bears. The sooner people realise this is one club the better off they will be (especially the board).

Very true Ink, factually incorrect, but I made the assumption that the OP (if they aren't trolling,) is channelling their emotion through their post and is obviously embellishing the facts a little.

Times change. I have been living in the Wests area for 40 years and used to see a lot of Magpie birds in my backyard. Now I see plenty of Indian Minor birds but very rarely Magpies. I never saw any Tigers in the Balmain area but used to see Balmain as a true working class area. Thats has all changed now too. The people getting the most attention in the Balmain/Rozelle area are the ones complaining about how the proposed building at the old Balmain club Rozelle site will change the character of the place. Someone should tell these people that the character of the place began changing when they began to live in the area.

It could be taken as interpretation.

As a balms in fan from the day I was born, the first in my family actually , but have managed to brainwash a few younger cousins along the way, I was devastated about the merge . Everyone would rather have balmain or the magpies to support but unfortunately this is it now , and although it took time for me to accept it , I'm happy supporting wests tigers now . A completely new team , not established in 1908 , not balmain and not the magpies . As far as I'm concerned I'm wests tigers fan with fond memories of balmain . Hope this makes sense

Nice point Henson … Back in the 70s when Dallas, Boydie, Sloth and the Snake were lighting the fuse under any interlopers silly enough to visit Lidcombe, my backyard thrived on backyard bonfires, and the magnificence of cracker night.

These days, out on the pitch you can't even line up a benign shoulder charge without being rubbed out, whilst my backyard is as flame free as a wet season BBQ.

Looks like the wowsers and the minor birds have won the day.
