Who is the board member with the big mouth?

Probably one of the two who backstabbed the only decent chair we have had in Marina Go.Consistently disloyal and completely untouchable

So if one of the issues is he couldn’t attract players, what hope do one of those Pommy coaches have. If we want to attract players, there’s only 2 options. Bennett, and as much as I hate him, Flanagan.

Flanagan is the only option in reality.

Anything else is a downgrade or a pipe dream. Ciraldo won’t come to kill his career and Bennett is heading back to coach QLD with Slater and start a new franchise.

The article just shows how the game will chew you up and spit you out. The number one take away for me is look after your money. It’s not about what you earn, it’s what you save.

That is the tone of the article, and that the poor bugger is now working in the mines, but it does also spell out that he was earning upwards of $600K a year during that time which incredible money for an untrained, unqualified guy. Probably earning decent $$$ in the mine now as well.

Doesn’t sound like he had brains outside of footy. Everyone telling him it won’t last forever and he was like “yeah yeah whatever”. Sounds like his support system sucked.

Agree and FWIW I dont think Tim was playing the "woe is me" role either but that is the angle the journalist was going for. I think its more "I bought the ticket and enjoyed the ride".

There was an interesting article I read yesterday where Thurston was living off $400 a week and investing the rest despite earning large contracts.

Few stories like your one, Brasher put all his football earnings into real estate, someone told me he owns upwards of 25 places. Their was a front rower played for the dogs and Balmain, Dennis Monte (sorry spelling is wrong) he put every cent into a ten year insurance policy and when he retired he picked up over a million tax free..this was way back probably mid 70s.

Sadly there are also lots who went the other way

Dennis Monteith, rubbish prop.

I wonder if we have a new coach, one good enough to shift the position of those Board members who initially were reluctant to change?

Can only hope. Im not against Madge being shown the door but only if we have a sure fire better option to replace him, which IMO would only be Bennett or Ciraldo

If we sign one of those pommy coaches, my god. Not only are we looking to the ESL because we can’t attract players, but now it’s also cos we can’t attract a coach. If those are our only options, stick with Madge.

Wolfe could be good

Why?

NRL experience? Proven defensive coaching credentials?

Wolfe has a good relationship with tamalolo perhaps if we got him he might be able to try and get talmalolo to kick stones and break his cowboys deal

Nobody is kicking stones to come to us.

I can’t wait for a new coach to come in and the players to all of a sudden start defending really well ***and have great line speed*** without Madge in their ear telling them to miss tackles and play with no heart (sarcasm)

I actually think you might be onto something accidentally correct. I think a massive part of our problem this year was fitness. Every game there have been moments early when we had good line speed, had players in motion around the ball, but usually 5 - 10 mins either side of half time we look shot whereas the top 4 teams are pumping for the full 80.

At the end of the off season I commented a few times that I have never seen the players looking so good. They all looked like adonises like Ive never seen a Tigers team look before and at the time I think I said that this will either be a great thing for us or a disaster.

IMO its possible out training staff had the boys tuned for strength and not cardio. Replacing the fitness guys might be a big start.

You guys thought Madge was bad. Wait until you see our next coach. Wait until you see him spend the next 3 years undoing Madge's roster, only to get sacked once he's done.

When will our club learn. Seriously. We are an embarrassment.

Whoever takes over from Madge is getting a better roster than Madge did.

I know our roster isn't great but I don't buy that it was so bad no coach could've got more out of them

There's no way Madge got the best out of our roster at all. The defence and attack was terrible most weeks and a lot of it was down to coaching structures.

I'm of the opinion a better coach could've got us into the top 8, you only needed 10 wins to make it after all.

Ivan had arguably a worse roster and got more out of them (never made finals though so screw him too)

Agree with this. I hope Madge is replaced with better, but will be the first coach we have had since Sheens where I have seen him go with some fondness. There is no doubt Madges heart was in it.

For me it was defence. This roster isnt top 4, maybe not top 8 but you can get them working in defence. For mine Potter and Cleary both had rubbish squads but at least shored up our defence which meant we were a shot in more games and a chance of squeaking into 8. Our defence is getting worse as the year goes on with the same weaknesses.

Why would we punt a coach who’s been successful everywhere else for a bunch of unknown coach options? At some point, you have to look inwards and stop punting coaches.

Flanagan is a cheat and Ciraldo is completely unproven with nothing to suggest he’ll be any better than Payten or Barrett.

The grass isn’t always greener.

Done good work with Tonga and Leeds. Tonga not a top tier side

This means nothing in the big scheme of things but my partner knows zero about RL. She is from Eastern Europe and Ive taken her to Leichhardt a couple of times but knows nothing about RL. She is an ex elite athlete (Olympic squad).

I watched part of the second episode of Tales from Tiger Town with her and as I apologised to her for the swearing as Madge addressed the team in the dressing room, she just turned to me and said "that man has lost his players, there is no connection.".

Its just the ramblings of an outsider but one with first hand experience of elite level coaching. I wanted to back Madge but at teh time I feared she was right.

Madge has no idea how to coach defence anymore. We had the worst defence in the league and a lot of it was down to his structures. Players made the same errors every week and he made no changes, he had them backing up when defending and there was no line speed. Never gonna win games doing that and it got worse every year.

Mate, I think the truth is Tigers and madge is like your worst ex misses. You should of never been together.

Probably correct to move on. But don't stop there remove board, ceo who got the majority to re-sign him. That's 700k down the drain that could of been used with junior development. Then look at who decided to hire madge to begin with and remove them too.

If they want to start to be a serious club then start acting like it. There's too many staff at the Tigers that are happy to be working for an NRL side and bleeds to our culture. We need champions in front office too.

Actually a decent article for Hooper and tend to agree

I think Madge and Sheens should carry out a review on the rest of the head office there the only ones who have seen any kind of success

What a joke of a club if they let Madge go.

The doco will vindicate him and the ceo and playing group will be the only ones to blame when we get the spoon next year.

Whos gonna wanna come.play here in the next 5 years. We will loose any good up and coming decent players also.

The tigers have been garbage for the best part of 15 years. Madge isnt the problem.

THis is one of the reasons I am behind Ciraldo. I think he would have a lot of pull with some of the younger players.
