Mitch Brown leaves Wests Tigers

Tigers say starting spot, not salary cap, behind Brown move to Dogs Brad Walter, Michael Carayannis
March 6, 2012

WESTS Tigers officials insist the decision to release utility back Mitch Brown to the Bulldogs was unrelated to a meeting they had last Friday with NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert.

Less than 24 hours after losing rookie fullback James Tedesco for the season with a knee injury, the Tigers announced that Brown - a potential candidate for the No.1 jersey - had been released to Canterbury.

The move follows a meeting between Tigers officials and Schubert last Friday, sparking rumours the club had salary cap issues after last week agreeing to release star England forward Gareth Ellis to return home at the end of the season.

However, Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphries said the decision to release Brown had more to do with the 24-year-old's desire to cement a starting berth after being overlooked for Sunday's opening match against Cronulla.

''Mitch approached us last week,'' Humphries said. ''He was a bit disappointed he didn't get a starting spot, he thinks he should have and there is an opportunity to do that at Canterbury so that is what has happened. There is nothing sinister in it. I think most clubs speak with Shuey quite regularly.''

Brown's agent Gavin Orr said his client turned down a three-year offer to join Canberra last year after Tigers coach Tim Sheens indicated he would get first crack at the fullback role. Orr said Brown's preference was to play right centre and there was an opportunity at the Bulldogs with the loss of Jamal Idris to Gold Coast.

Brown's arrival at Canterbury comes as some of Canterbury's biggest names have their playing futures in doubt, with new coach Des Hasler adopting a wait-and-see approach before re-signing anyone.

State of Origin players David Stagg and Steve Turner and Kiwi internationals Dene Halatau and Bryson Goodwin headline a list of a dozen players off-contract at season's end.

Manly five-eighth Kieran Foran tops Hasler's wish list with the Kiwi international expected to command about $400,000 on the open market.

The Bulldogs have also been linked to rookie Sea Eagles prop Darcy Lussick.

''It's not just me, there are about a dozen of us and with Des coming over he wants to see what we are like and if we adapt to his structure,'' Turner said. ''I dare say it'll be some time mid-season before I speak contract or Des speaks contract. It's certainly something out of my control. I'd love to stay at the club.''

Meanwhile, Turner has compared Hasler to former Melbourne Storm mentor Craig Bellamy.

''Craig and Des are very passionate about training and showing how hard you work in the pre-season will determine how you play during the season,'' Turner said.

''The intensity Des brings to the club whether it's doing video work or training - it's just the little things. The intensity at training has gone up and so to the accountability of the players.''

Sheen's promising Brown first shot at fullback and not delivering. Sheen's promising Farah a starting spot in the Australian team and not delivering. He is starting to sound like Gillard.

An excellent way to bring disharmony into the camp.

Seems he's promised that fullback spot to just about everybody - last year it was Moltzen (who eventually got it)and Mullaney (who left because he was promised a go in firsts).
I know things can change - but just maybe he should stop making out things are going to happen when there's a good chance they won't.

Maybe Sheens has been mis-quoted? We are talking about a Player Manager here!

Just maybe Sheens has said : "Brownie, I reckon you will get first shot at the Fullback Jumper in 2012, if you perform well in the off-season"

2 Key points in such a sentance - 'I reckon' and 'if you perform in the off-season'

Very easily mis-quoted by a Player Manager looking for a starting spot for his player to activate an upgrade in a contract?!

This is a little random, but id love to see Tiger99's thoughts on Mitch going? You out there 99!? Or are you on the dogs forum now?? hehe, just checkinnggggg..

Are you saying Tiger99 is Mitch? I hope not, Tiger99 was always good for reliable inside info.

Mullaney's mum telling porkies too Watto?

I'm not saying anyone is telling porkies… I'm just pointing out that such comments relating to 'getting such jersey' is easily mis-quoted/interpreted.

Watto is right. Nobody is or should be promised anything. If you're the best player for the position (in the eyes of the coach) you will/should get picked. I find it hard to believe Sheens said you will be the starting fullback no matter what in 2012 but some of you are very quick to assume Sheens is the one to blame and take the word of an agent instead.

I will be very interested to see if he gets names in the starting Bulldogs side. Lets see if this leap of faith Mitch has made will be worth it.

Sad to see Brown go. He has been a very reliable utility back for us over the last couple years. Very handy to have these sorts of guys at the club.

I'd be surprised if he's named in the Dogs side this week. Just because he's only been there a couple days, and i don't see whose spot he's gonna take straight off the bat

The only one I could see him shake is Jonathon Wright - that would be about it. The other players are rather good doggies players - Turner, Barba, Morris, and Goodwin.

i had my suspicions!, but i was wrong as always!! I can now see where Tiger99 posted on another thread last night so thankfully he is still with us and hopefully still brings us some good inside info!!

Had nothing to do with the salary cap…He such a nice kid so we thought we would let him go to the dogs. Give the kid a break and make the dogs a little stronger. Now if you believe that you still believe in Santa.

I say we either had cap problems or are freeing some space for a late signing.Sheens knows like the rest of us you need a truck load of depth if you have any chance of making the top four so why would you give one of your best depth players away and in doing so give the dogs a leg up. I smell a rat

Dog's have named Brown in the centres in their NSW Cup side for this week.

*slow clap*

Well played Mitch. You fooled us all.

Nah, in all seriousness, good luck to him, once the dogs get over their Desgasm, he'll be shuffled into the team in lieu of Wright or Goodwin.
