No New Signings until 2017 - Jason Taylor Statement

To me it seems clear that the new management have taken a stand to right the ship that for years has been listing badly! We could've continued on the path of the past - always struggling with backended contracts, poor facilities and under-qualified staff etc, or we could take some hard decisions, let some overpaid under-performing players go, let some average plodders go, save on dollars and put our resources into fixing the infrastructure that will hopefully pay big dividends down the track. I would rather put up with a couple more tough years (with lowered expectations), in the knowledge that at least the right people are there to guide the young fellers and hopefully keep them on the field! No point having 4 or 5 second rowers sitting in the grandstands with long term injuries because of substandard S & C staff! No point having an Adam Blair chewing up $500K a year when there's a couple of local fellers in the lower grades who wouldn't be too far inferior. Anyhow, I'm prepared to suck it up and let Moss, JT and the new board do their job!

For years we have been calling out for the club to tell us what is going on and to give us reliable and truthful information. Now Taylor comes out and basically tells us info most of us did not want to hear and the place goes into melt down. I think he deserves full marks for being up front. From a marketing point of view it would have been a lot easier to give a wishy washy piece of fluff and avoid telling the punters what their real plans are.

With our current group of players we will be in a massive battle to get to mid table, but I love the policy of sitting on your cheque book till the right player comes available and not just spending money because you have cap space available.

The board, Taylor and his coaching team need to be given time before we start turning on them, lets face it the 2015 season is months away

hold on no ones turning on them, most are upset that we can let 14 or so players leave and then be told we cant afford to bring in any one at all. Believe what u want but our forward pack foe 2015 is crap we got belted with what we had now 1/2 are gone and no replacements at all, to me it looks like massare most weeks coming up.

Pretty sure the last time the club didn't spend the full cap and gave the younger guys an opportunity was 2005 (albeit with some experienced seniors around them).

I like what Taylor and Moss are doing. Taylor really needs that first year to see what he has. Watching footage of previous games only gives him a part indication. He needs to see how they train and how closely they follow his game plans and ethos. Then he can target exactly the type of players he thinks the team needs.

I don't believe for a second that there will be no signings until 2017\. Wouldn't surprise me either way if there was one before 2015 kick off or not until 2016.

Its gotta give the current squad some confidence knowing the coach has faith in his roster.

The reality is that aside from Blair, all of the guys we released would struggle to make it into our fully fit top 17 each week.

They are more or less depth players, and while they can be important, it's not like we just lost Farah and Brooks. We have let go blokes who will in all likelihood end up being fringe/bench players at their new clubs (again, aside from Blair).

The sky is definitely not falling in just yet.

We do not lack quality, but we are very short on experience and depth, and that is what gets you through 26 rounds and 3 state of O games. Taylor knows it,blind Freddy knows it, but if the players you need are not on the market you do not go out and buy the next best thing. So what Taylor and Moss are doing is getting the books in order to strike when the right player comes available.

Their will be a signing or two over the next couple of years, just no stupid ones as in the past

Decent half yearly purchases seem to becoming the norm now, wouldn't be surprised if they do open up a mid year transfer window to cater for this.

Great opportunity for so many guys who are either youngsters emerging or been on the fringe for a year or so.

Take note Asipeli, Naqaima, Heleta, Santi, Lovett, Akaoula, Peni and Seve. And Moltzen of course.

There is always a positive if you choose to look for it.

I prefer your attitude KS This will be a great opportunity for these young blokes to show how good they are :righton: I think JT knows what he's doing :stuck_out_tongue: give the bloke a chance and GO TIGERS :master:

I think it would do their confidence more good to have a reasonable centre and a big hard running hardheaded forward beside them
There's no one that puts fear into the opposition.

Really? You don't think Taupau is an intimidating forward? We were commended last season for our strong pack which rarely got beaten, especially early in the season. Out of the 4 'smash bothers' highlighted early in the season we have only lost Gavet who had a lot of deficiencies. Sue,Taupau, Ava, Akauola all go pretty hard!
Lodge and Woods are workhorse props, and Lawrence may be a revelation in the back row. Santi is quite capable of making 40+ tackles a game in the NRL and hopefully Sirro starts to emerge as a genuine back rower after learning the ropes last season.

Experience of Richards, Farah, Galloway, Halatau, Lawrence. Even Woods. That's 6 experienced players in and aroudn the lineup, and a bunch of other guys with a couple of seasons, maybe 20-40 games under their belts. They should be about ready to kick on too.

Our team really isn't much weaker than last season. One more experienced back rower is all we lack.

The bottom line is there is not a huge difference in elite sport between nearly all the teams ,the difference lies in attitude/coaching /S&C and belief in one self. The club has finally changed direction and for the better ,there is going to be some pain to get the gain!.
All in all I see a culture shift within the club and this seems to be positive , it will be pretty exciting watching probable the youngest side in the NRL getting it on week to week ,remember youth has no fear!
Well come Monday I am off to purchase a couple more memberships as I see exciting times ahead coupled with some low times that's life! but the ship has been righted and steaming in a new direction.

I agree that Taupau is our best weapon in the forwards this year but he was good when he played short stints and will be again, but he sometimes drops in defence if he has to play long stints. Maybe after the off season he may be effective for a longer time. And his defence will be better.
Maybe Lodge will step up this year . He certainly played well when he got the chance. And he may be able to hurt in defence. But he's still learning and you can't expect him to be an enforcer.
Hopefully it's time for Woodsy to go up a gear in defence, but he seems to pull players down rather than punish them.
I'm not saying our forwards are not good but imo there's not enough mongrel in them.
Real hardheaded props don't come along often,I admit ,but I still don't think anyone in our team really makes the opposition think twice about running at them
One of the things that really helped us at the beginning of last season was the different way that the game was referred.
Hands weren't allowed on the ball, time laying on the tackled players was shortened, markers were policed better and the game was so much faster
Yes our pack looked brilliant , but the combination of injuries and referees going back to the crappo slow play with players laying all over the tackled player soon stopped that
We need a mongrel.

"….....that Taupau is our best weapon in the forwards............"

Any gun forward needs his other forwards to play their part too; it's not just one player in isolation.

So this team has to play as simply that: a team = a team that will bleed for one another!!

Why is it that when we have seen sironen struggle shifting from 5/8 to the forwards that we think Lawrence will be our saviour? He won't and should play reggies if he can't get a starting spot. No need to make him fit because he's a great guy. Tough call for JT coming up. If he does get a go there is no way it will be from the start of the season or we are in real trouble
