NORTH SYDNEY BEARS Perth-

It’s a big call by Mal. Giving up a cushy Kangaroos job to go to the otherside of the country and start a new franchise. He’ll be 67 in their first season.
Good luck to him.

The lucrative carrot must have been too good to refuse

He has a massive job to do. Putting Perth on the map in the NRL world would be a high priority for the game

Definitely out of left field. Could understand if the appointment was someone who had a connection to the Bears like a Florimo or a certain popular ex coach of ours. Bizarre to say the least.

I’m surprised they didn’t make a huge play for Ivan. You’d think Penrith’s run is over and there isn’t much left for him to do there. And it’s not like he isn’t above breaking a contract. Plus he’s an ex Bear. I’d be stunned if they didn’t at least put out feelers to him.

Gotta give Mal cresit taking on a tough gig setting up a new club....mostncoaches have so much set in place already they just change what they feel needs changing to suit thier style.
Its a big ask
It's a Bennett job for mine, has the recent track record at getting the Phins off the ground, that's if he's available though, think Souths would want to keep him.

The Bears and even worse PNG you think are going to struggle at first to attract recruits, to pack up their lives and move to the other side of the country/overseas until their junior pathways contribute, that will take years.

Will only succeed if Michael Hasan goes as his assistant. It was Hagan who basically coached the QLD SOO team, Mal was just the front man.
Yes, he'll definitely need some good assistants. I think he can be a good lure for players and he gives the club a profile over here, people know who he is. They're an opportunity for an assistant to line themselves up to be a head coach in '29.

So how long until Api gets spoken about as their first target?
Did the same think happen with the Dolphins ie names or targets started popping up prior to Nov1?

signing Mal is a cheap publicity stunt. S Burgess would have put some backbone into the joint

Big ask getting a 140 year old man to move to the other side of the country at his age.
