Robbie Farah and Issac Luke on All Stars standby to replace Gareth Ellis and Dave Taylor

AN UNPRECEDENTED string of injuries has seen Robbie Farah and Issac Luke placed on standby for Saturday week's historic All Stars clash on the Gold Coast.

The pair were ready to be brought in for the NRL All Stars side late last night to replace Wests Tigers' Gareth Ellis and Souths' Dave Taylor.

Indigenous back-rower Daine Laurie and All Stars utility Alan Tongue were also scratched yesterday, while Indigenous ace Greg Inglis (hip) is not expected to regain fitness for the Skilled Park encounter.

Giant Souths recruit Taylor rolled his ankle during a field session on Tuesday, a mishap that has pushed back his Rabbitohs' debut beyond Sunday's Return to Redfern trial against Manly.

Canberra workaholic Tongue, meanwhile, aggravated a long-standing wrist injury and was devastated to miss out on the historic match. English import Ellis is fit and firing, but has requested to stay in Sydney to be at his partner Rachael's side as she nurses the couple's newborn son, Isaac William.

This is pretty much what I expected to happen here…..this game isnt worth the risk for these blokes. Looks like everyone is trying to get out of it.

Wrong time of year for a game like this...only bad can come out of it.

Just on the replacement issue, how can two big workhorses be replaced by hooker/utilities?

All Stars clash next best thing to Origin, says Kiwis skipper Marshall GLENN JACKSON AND CHRIS BARRETT

WHILE many are attempting to compare Saturday night's All Stars encounter with State of Origin, some such as Benji Marshall are unable to, having never experienced the latter. For him, at least, the match is more important than rugby league's showpiece.

The Wests Tigers five-eighth, the NRL All Stars halfback, has dubbed the contest at Skilled Stadium ''my State of Origin'', being unable to play for either NSW or Queensland.

''This is my one chance to play with some of these guys,'' said Marshall, in the line-up as New Zealand captain. ''I'll be able to play with guys I never thought I'd be able to play with. I can't play State of Origin, but now I can play with guys like Darren Lockyer.''

The one component lacking from Origin is the fact the best Kiwis have been unable to be a part of the game's maroon-and-blue jewel. Sonny Bill Williams wanted the chance to play State of Origin, and while Marshall acknowledges the fact it is Australian ''culture'', he will relish his chance to experience the mate-against-mate style of encounter on Saturday night.

The prospect of playing with Lockyer, the veteran Queenslander and his partner in the halves on Saturday, has particularly excited Marshall. '''I've always wanted to play with him,'' he said. ''I've always admired him as a person. I've tried to model a lot of my game on what he does as a player. It's going to be something I'll never forget. A lot of my family want to come and watch it.''

The match also gives Marshall a chance to reunite with Wayne Bennett, the coach of the NRL All Stars line-up, who helped the Kiwis to victory in the 2008 World Cup.

While no one could truly expect the contest between the best of Australia's Indigenous talent and the rest to rival Origin, at least in its fledgling years, there are similarities emerging. The Indigenous line-up will mirror Queensland by being the sentimental favourites as well as the squad many feel will have more passion than their opponents. And that has Marshall wary.

''They'll be coming out firing - they're playing for their heritage, their history,'' Marshall said. ''If we go out there to muck around, we're going to get hurt. But no one likes losing.''

Surely they wont start with Cam Smith and have both Ennis and Farah on the bench. That's a waste of a bench spot and it will mean the forward pack will get less of a break.

Sam Burgess, Dave Shillington and Roobie were called in to replace the players so robbie to the bench and one from the bench will take gareth's starting spot probably tupou

Robbie Farah: Farah made 30 errors in 2009 and he will make some in this game. The Indigenous defenders can’t just rush him, as he is skilful enough to beat players with a pass or step or even a kick. But “bash” him as a unit and he may limit his involvement. It’s also a good idea to make him defend often to tire him out… he is a special for a ‘flop’ in defence when tired, which can draw a penalty.

Benji Marshall: A loose carrier of the football. Marshall made 35 errors in 2009 and can be brittle defensively at times (ineffective 25 per cent in 2009) as he fails to wrap up the football. The Indigenous boys need to look to promote the football while running over the top of Marshall. He also loves to drift sideways, so he can be vulnerable to a big hit – providing defenders don’t get beaten by his sensational side-step.

 That's the best this peanut can come up with….....
