I suspect Ryan based his decision on not wanting to be a back up as well.

I always wondered where we could fit Ryan in the backline. As others have said, on the small side to be on the flanks or in the centres. It seems to me that when Teddy is fit he would never get a look in.

The club clearly rated Ryan. They promoted him heavily last year with Liddle as two young guns coming through. However, at the same time, they can neither promise something they can't deliver (a first grade spot when the best fullback in the comp is here) nor pay big money for a backup, not matter how good he is.

This is very disappointing to lose such a promising junior. You hit the nail on the head as we are very light on outside backs. We have so much money wasted in rankin, kev, hunt and these guys are just not first grade material. Being a youngster he doesnt have to play fullback, he can be started on the wing and transitioned into fullback in fhe future. We really need another centre and a speedy winger. We had one but the storm took him aswell.

None of those players are signed for next year or beyond so they had nothing to do with this decision. We are not "wasting" any money on them next year. Melbourne offered him an opportunity and a clear path to a first grade spot in his preferred position. We were not in a position to do that because we are clearly looking to invest heavily in Tedesco. Not everything is a bloody failure on the part of the club…

I agree that it does point to a Teddy deal. If teddy is staying you are no chance unless injury. If teddy was going the club would have made a reasonable offer for him to stay.

Spot on. No kid with huge potential is going to sign behind Tedesco Melbourne are a shrewd well run organisation and don't develop kids. They target other clubs and QLD players which, used to be solely the Broncos.
