BB how many games has Faataape played in the NRL? No doubt he is underdone but he is improving and knows how to score a try. Someone at the club sees something in him as do I. I believe he has the makings of a solid centre.
He's bang average, in one of the worst NRL sides ever put together. If we want to get out of this mess we need to aim much higher than players like him. Keep him as a train and trial but his defence is atrocious, and he's too slow.
Just because he's been playing doesn't make him a good player, he wouldn't make the top 30 for any other side.

The days of Matt Utai dominating the league are long gone. I've no idea why we're trying to bring back a squad full of Utai clones. If Faatape is starting then there's no room for Olam, Feledy, Mason or Laulilii. They're all competing for one spot and i'd have him well down that pecking order.

Stats are up. A few observations from them & highlights video ...

Mason, Naden, Sullivan, Johannssen, Matamua, Sukkar very impressive.
Ngutlik, very good attack stats & amazing play-the-ball speed! That's what we need as @Iron Fist mentioned.
Feledy, missed tackles poor. Defence is halting his progress.
Vaihu & Broederlow, missed tackles poor as well. A couple of Vaihu's bad misses led to tries.
Looked a good team effort despite those with poor D mentioned above.
Everything I have seen of Sione Vaihu, whether its in the trials, in Flegg or now in Cup, he has been terrible.

I mean, objectively and regularly woeful.

If someone has some intel on him that suggests otherwise, I'm all ears.

Listening to Gould, it was obvious he had done some research on him. We'll have a difference of opinion on Faataape but I feel he has potential to be a solid centre.

I am a big believer that wing is a specialist position. A centre only in an emergency. The way Faataape runs the ball in traffic with a combination of power, pace and step reminds me for a former Manly centre.
But he is oblivious to those around him. He could still run like that and be our equivalent of T’oo.

I watched him play in the NRL trial one year when he was a youngster. He made a clean break on the right hand side and demonstrated a good turn of pace. I believe he has a lot to work with and hope he succeeds.
See that's the thing, you often seem to base judgment on one play, often from several years ago as an indication of what a player may produce in the future. Where possible, I try to look more holistically, if a player makes a good run once every 2-3 years then in my view it's somewhat safe to say he's not an overly strong runner of the ball as they haven't demonstrated their ability to break teh line regualrly over a period of a couple of years.

For the record I don't think he's bad, i do think he's at least 3-4 years from genuinely competing for first grade and should be on no more than a train and trial. If he leaves as a consequence then so be it, he's not a standout junior.

If he suddenly clicks into gear and it all works out sooner then great

He is useless, small slow and terrible defence.
He should have been turfed a while back, never had nrl potential. He's taking the space of a player who might kickon.

Players improve and remember he has been taken from the Brisbane Comp. I'm a big believer in incremental improvement and it is up to the club and player to make those improvements. He has offloaded the ball in try scoring positions previously.

BB - I will provide one name over which we had quite a strong difference of opinion and that is Fonua Pole. I don't claim to have any special talent at picking players, but I leave that to the experts. But it was plainly obvious to everyone at the ground, except you that he was special. Let's leave it there

Hmm, i actually rated Pole. He was one of the few Balmain juniors to show promise. Was a slower developer in Cup and didn't stand out but once he got a chance in NRL he took it.

When Naden and Sullivan apply themselves they are too good for reserve grade and generally have a big enough influence to help their team win the game,
I know their inconsistency would be very irritating as a coach, but it looks like Benji has written them off and not prepared to work with them far too early and unfairly when you consider the many others regularly in our NRL team who seem to get far too many chances without any repercussions for poor performances.
Quite a few of us all agree that Koroni Staggs would be a great signing for us from 2026 onwards, I’m concerned our disregard for so many indigenous players such as Daine Laurie last season, then Naden and Sullivan along with Tumeth and Craig might make other indigenous players concerned about playing for Wests Tigers.
I think Naden is a great mentor for the young boys coming through. He is always pushing them on the field to get the best out of them. Guiding them around the paddock. That was evident again on Sunday. That’s the culture we need from a lot more senior players around the club.
