Racing tips, talk etc

My oldman had Don Scott's book I think called winning ways.... Dad reckoned Scott was pretty cluey, I tried to read it but don't have a head for figures weights odds etc
Dad died broke

This is the exact reason I love poker. It's an unsolved game that requires a lot of analysis. I would discuss hands with other winning players and learn so much.
Yeah I love me poker. As a teen I grew living with my Nan who used to run Manila nights that would last from Friday Arvo to Sunday arvo. Manila is like Texas only you turn one card at a time and can bet each time, so it’s a bit slower but you can have more money in the pot, and it’s a ring game with no time limit. You just keep pulling more money out of your pocket if you want to keep playing. I used to make toasted sambos and drinks and was allowed to sit in with the house money while one of the players would get some sleep. Hard schools are the best schools.

Played a lot of tournaments too though. Played a $2000 re buy at starcity 10am Wednesday mornings, one time manly players were there. Steve Menzies sat next to me and was a gentleman who did ok but played real tight and eventually ran out of cash, while Watmough was a complete smart ass tool who big noted and I eventually thank him for his money. I just missed the final table that day. I haven’t played for a while and would love a good game.

So many aspects go into horse racing. Love it.

Then you get the punter that picks a horse by the jockey's shirt colour.

Used to own a pretty decent mare up here in Qld called Schiavone. Was always racing above her grade as the trainer wanted to keep weight off her. Had a couple of wins, twice as many 2nd's & a whole lot of fun.

Punting story- was at Ipswich on Ipswich Cup day & Schiavone was in a 1000m sprint a few races before the main event. She was, statistically, completely out of her class. Bookies had her in the 80's about 15 minutes before the race. Horses are in the parade ring & the girl in the parade ring mentions the one thing Schiavone had in her bag- she had the fastest finishing 600m time in the field & an inside draw. I was in the bookie ring at the time & my brother & I decided her odds would only go up- so we'd wait before putting our dollars on. Brother runs off to the toilet & I swear her odds went from 81-1 down to 70 as soon as he left. 60. 50. 25-1. 17's. He came back & she was at 10-1.

He turns to me and asks "Bloody hell- how much did you put on her??"

I'd put mine on when she dropped into 50-1.

Then she promptly ran 4th.

I used to get my fix online (Full Tilt and PokerStars) online is much more of a mathematical game. To be honest with you, I much prefer playing live. I love the banter and being able to read players. These days I just get my fix playing small buy-in live tournaments. Will probably do Vegas next year and play an event in the WSOP.

Yeah played a lot online till the govt made it not real money.

Did you play cash or tournaments? 6-max cash was the best there was a lot more action as you're playing with wider ranges.
Used to mix it up a bit on line. I used to like winning small tournaments to make the big monthly tournaments and there’s thousands of people and goes all day.

when I was doing form for one of the betting agencies it was fun. I was doing british form and then moved to Sydney form. They tend to use weights and measures as a guide for doing form that being the Don Scott method of 1.5kg equals a length etc.
Another form tip I used to use is in Qld racing
In a class 6 you bet on the top weight with a 3kg claim

it works you just have to set rules
generally don't bet on 2 year old races
don't bet on maidens
don't bet on straight races

Handicaps (apart from melbourne cup) are where the weights and measures really work as that is all the handicapper is doing is using weights to assess form.

Interesting JT, but why the restrictions, good 2Yos have traditionally been most reliable, maiden favourite winning percentage is higher than the norm and straight race criteria usually revolves around the outside 1/2 of the field( as per barriers).
Me, I’m very partial to any race around a corner , focusing on inside 5 barriers at value prices , my reckoning between $5 and $11. And I’m not frightened to back a few in the race.
That goes ok for me, amongst a few other things. But it’s an ever changing landscape and now I’ve retired from work, I do a lot of study and data analysis, loving it !

PS but I’m a lousy card player !

Not here BF. I’m the worst card player ever. I was even hopeless at Snap when I was young !

A man’s gotta know his limitations. 😁
My best card story. I went to Burswood Casino in Perth some years ago and it was packed , there was only one seat I could see at any $10 table - first base.
I looked at my fellow players and they were all older Singaporean women( in those days with a 4 hour flight from Singapore it was an attractive weekend away option).
So I started playing and made every fundamental error in the book, I hit when I should have sat, I sat when I should have hit etc. in the end one of the ladies turned to me and said” have you ever played this game before”, I said of course , she replied “ well then can you go somewhere else and play”.
Embarrassed, I cashed in, much to muffled laughter and went to the slots, no decision making there !

I like it Hal.
I had a similar experience on my casino debut. We had a family outing to Sydney casino (old premises). Nan was playing roulette, the 2 uncles and I were playing blackjack the other seats were Asians. I hit when I should’ve sat and there were some mumbles, but when I did it again, it cost the whole table their money, the Asian’s were going off at me pointing and yelling in Asian. I asked the uncle seated next to me and he explained because I hit, the dealer got a different card then if I sat, and how if effected everyone’s hand. The next time I sat and everyone at the table won and there was cheering and pointing and laughing and the lady next to me who had already hit me on the arm for being a spaz was now speaking perfect English saying “good boy you learn “.
I have since learnt to play BJ mathematically and to count cards the easy way.
It’s stories like ours Hal is why I love playing cards or going to the track, or sitting around the kitchen table with Nan and the fam reading the form guide together there’s more to it then money.

Hi Guys
Track bias is cutting into my study time, I’m watching the first 2 races every Saturday before deciding on the form for the day (leaders or swooped)
Leader bias is becoming to common at the moment IMO.

well partly due to the fact I do stake betting so I bet to win a certain amount per race. Basically I do a staking plan it tends to limit the losses if you have a bad run.
The rules are just what I used after years of doing form analysis (did it for some of the network presenters and then agencies)
I also frame my own market so I can work out value, I am pretty strict with it so if I assess a horse at 7/2 and I only get $3 I don't bet.
mainly use all the rules to limit the bets

in the dogs I had a system of box 1 and 8 in every race just put a fixed amount on example $50 on both dogs and do it over a meeting or a couple of meetings it goes well.
