Robbie Farah..Discussion Thread.....

now they have the depth with new signings to ensure that all the players will be vying for their positions and he thinks that has had a positive effect on everyone.

This is great to hear. Hopefully our potential will now transform into consistent, strong performances.

There is always the chance Ballin was signed just to keep Farah honest. No player should take their spot for granted.

The more this drags on the more it seems an armistice has been reached. Whether that is because JT has the dagger hanging over his head or not remains to be seen but it looks as though they've put it aside. IMO it's a weak look for the club but that's neither here nor there.

Ballin will certainly play during origin, but I'm also wondering if there's a positional change coming up for Farah and will we see him line up at lock? It just makes no sense that Ballin was signed when he easily could have finished up in reggies at Manly. He wouldn't come over to do the same here, unless he figured six games during the middle of the year is better than none?

Sounds like we are getting it together , and after going ok in the last few rounds of last season , new faces in the club , players will need to train hard and take that into the field to keep there spot , we seem to have more depth so if Robbie did get injured Ballin and Cherry still there that's good , it will also give Cherry some real good players to compete with and this will only make him stronger
8 th to 10 th for me

People keep saying it makes no sense to purchase Ballin if Robbie stays.

Well in 2015 and obviously the strategy is that Cherrington will play off the bench which means that you are playing 2 hookers strategy which I think works well given we need to get Cherrington game time but he isn't a starting or an 80 minute hooker as yet.

This means that if either Farah or Ballin are injured for any of the year we have a back up or even if Cherrington is injured we can maintain our strategy of 2 hookers as its hard to change that approach part way through the season as players train and teams work to that kind of strategy.

Now Farah is going to miss at least 3 games but in reality has played between 16-18 games for the last 4 years and he isn't getting any younger. So that means that Ballin would get say 10 games as a minimum and that assumes Cherrington can last a full season without injury which isn't realistic in his first season but also I think it gives the opportunity to drop Cherrington back to NSW Cup occasionally to get a full 80 minutes in NSW Cup to build him up.

Hence Ballin probably gets another 6 games.

SO you have across a year
Farah - 16 games
Ballin - 16 games
Cherrington - 16 games

As part of 2 Hooker rotations with injury, rep games and Cherrington needing a rest in NSW Cup

This also means you don't play Halatau at Hooker unless absolutely necessary as I think he isn't up to it in FG anymore.

This to me proves the use of Ballin , reflects how much Farah really plays and that Cherrington isn't up to 80 minutes at this stage

Actually that is a good point Boonboon

Since 2011 Farah has averaged around 17 games a season

Good post - I think player management along these lines is going to become the norm with a reduction in replacements during the game.

I'm still under the impression Taylor will try to use all three hookers in the starting 17 each week with Ballin wearing the 9 and Farah sitting in 13 with him injecting himself to spark our attack and then cherrington doing the same thing when he replaces Ballin or Farah. Also having Farah away from the rake 24/7 gives more opportunity to Moses and brooks to direct the game but also creates another attacking option on the field with Farah playing like a 'roaming attacking' role in the line

Ballin and Farah defending together for most of the game is not a bad thing either as they can both tighten the defense and they both like to tackle and do the dirty work.

It's a bit far feteched but we'll see come round 1 I guess

Well thought out Boonboon, I hadn't thought of it that way.

I think the purchase of ballin means that in 2016 Ballin will cover Farah in the games that he misses while cherrington has a full season in nsw cup. I think if Farah moves on at the end of 2016, Cherrington will still have another year to develop under ballin in 2017 possibly coming off the bench and hopefully will be ready as first choice hooker in 2018 as ballin moves on as well

Farah will stay and play at Tigers: Taylor

Wed 18 Nov, 2015, 8:24pm

Embattled Wests Tigers player Robbie Farah will remain at the NRL club in 2016 and could still be the team's first-choice hooker, according to coach Jason Taylor.

The former captain was given permission to look elsewhere in August and was reportedly told he would play reserve grade if he stayed at the club.

But Taylor now says the issue is "75 to 80 per cent" sorted.

"Robbie's decided that he is going to remain with the club and I'm comfortable with that and we move forward," Taylor told radio 2UE's Sports Today program.

"We've been working pretty closely over the past couple of weeks. A lot has been said in the past but the point is Robbie will stay on board this year and I will coach Robbie well and we'll work together well.

"Robbie and I have had some good discussions and we will continue to do that. I'm not saying that it's sorted out 100 per cent. I'm saying that it's sorted out 75, 80 per cent and we'll keep working together."

Farah's position in the team was brought into further question in October when he stood down as the club's captain, while the Tigers also signed fellow 80-minute hooker Matt Ballin from Manly.

However, Taylor now says Farah will be given the opportunity to prove his worth in the pre-season to keep his spot.

"The facts are that Robbie will be considered for a position in the team every week and there is no reason that he won't be the starting hooker in round one," Taylor said.

"We've signed Matt Ballin, Matt Ballin has a knee injury and so, if Matt's not right to play in round one, then Robbie could be, and even if Matt is right, Robbie Farah could be our starting hooker in round one.

"Every player in the club is going to be given the opportunity to show they deserve their starting spot, whoever it is."

Taylor also said the decision on Farah was not isolated to the hooker, with Keith Galloway, Matthew Lodge, Pat Richards and Martin Taupau all released from the club with time to run on their contracts.

"Some tough decisions have had to be made; the Wests Tigers have been sitting at the bottom for too long," he said.

"I'm comfortable we're going to have really good competition, and I'm comfortable with the way Robbie has turned up and the way he has applied himself, so it's just going to make for great competition for positions."

Taylor's comments come in light of Tigers' NSW State of Origin prop Aaron Woods saying he had been impressed with Farah's efforts at the beginning of the pre-season.

"Robbie is a world-class athlete. I have never seen someone as fit and mentally strong as Rob," Woods said.

"He is that fit and you wouldn't even know he has had any problems in the off-season.

"He has come back to training and he has been one of our best trainers and I wouldn't expect any less from Robbie."

If Cherrington ends up being relegated back into NSW Cup for a full season next year, after being used in first grade quite a bit this season, then I think he'll leave.

He didn't play much of state cup this year though. He kind of went from 20s to first grade bench. Remember he was missing for like the first 10 games due to injury and pretty much went straight to NRL for the back end of the season. There were quite a few games where he was named 18th and 19th man for NRL and didn't play at all in any grades. Had a handful of games at most down there

With the salary cap so tight to have money tied up in three no9s is crazy. Okay Balin was signed because they thought Farah was going to walk, now we have three no9s plus Halatau, once again the roster I way out of whack. All Can see is Cherrington getting very frustrated and walking at his first opportunity

Don't worry SC

Farah definitely won't be here in 2017 , I wouldn't right off if he will be here in 2016 just yet

Farah and Taylor probably don't agree whether the sky is blue , and the only thing they agree on is how much they want to see the others back

Either way Manaia would of been behind someone ,he isn't ready to be our No 1 hooker just yet, his time will still come
