That terrible fire aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard in San Diego has injured 18 and word is the ship will be a constructive total loss. I hope no more crew or firefighters are lost.

It's a shame. I was fortunate enough to get on the Bon Homme Richard for a tour when it docked in Australia a few years ago. Impressive ship which has also been used in a few movies over the years including Transformers and Act of Valor.

This is a fine ship which served six years forward deployed to Japan with the 7th Fleet.

Fortunately, a new ship, the aircraft centric USS Tripoli has been commissioned and will no doubt be hastened on it's way to San Diego from the East Coast. Tripoli is the sistership of USS America.

USS Bon Homme Richard is listing, the hull damaged, the mast has collapsed and the bridge is melting. The ship is 22 years old and is steam powered. The last ship of the class, USS Makin Island has gas turbines.

This will be a sad ending for a fine ship. USS Tripoli is on the way to San Diego after trials while a further sistership, USS Bougainville, is under construction. In the end, the US will add one more ship to the USS America Class to replace USS Bon Homme Richard.

scroll down on the link to view photos of the Bridge structure and inside the hangar deck of Bon Homme Richard. The ship is listing and in all probability will settle on the Harbour floor as she is in shallow water.

Less smoke emanating from the ship. Fire parties aboard are attempting to locate the source of the forward fire in the lower vehicle deck.

The machine spaces are not impacted.

USS Tripoli commissioned and will be on its way to San Diego just in time to replace was is jokingly referred to as USS Bonfire Richatd, Tripoli is a 45,000t aviation centric ship.

The soon to be HMAS Supply undergoing sea trials in Ferrol, Spain. The ship is due in Henderson WA at end of August. where 2 x 25mm Typhoon mounts will be fitted aft. together with a 20mm Phalanx Mount. Another Phalanx is to be fitted for but not with forward.

A huge improvement for Antartic research with our new icebreaker Nuyina towed from the builder's yard in Romania via the Danube River to the Netherlands for fitting out. This ship is over 20,000 tonnes and no doubt will be in demand by a number of nations with stations down south.

The future HMAS Supply in sea trials off Ferrol in Spain. The ship is painted in the new haze Gray colour. The ship will be in Australia by end of this month. Sistership, the future HMAS Stalwart, is fitting out and will be in Australian waters in 2022.

Nuship Supply leaving the shipyard in Spain on her way to Australia. The scenes at the end of the film near Cadiz are stunning. Sad that she will probably never return to where she was built. Note her sistership, Nuship Stalwart, being completed in the background.

I hope the new support ships outlined in the Govermentls most recent defence papers can be built at Osborne in SA.

Nice ship Paws, what's with the new colour? Improvements to camouflage or something?

The upgrade of Australia's Anzac Class frigates is progressing well at Henderson Yard in WA near Fremantle. The fifth shop, HMAS Towoomba, has entered the shipyard joining HMAS Warramunga and HMAS Perth on the hardstand. The photo on the attached link shows all three frigates.

This programme is ahead of schedule reinforcing the capability of Australian industry if given the chance. The number of modifications makes this a very intricate upgrade. There are eight frigates in the class.

NZ preferred to have their two frigates upgraded in Canada by Lockheed Martin. Unfortunately there have been significant cost overruns and delays. Their first frigate is only now undergoing trials. Their upgrade does not offer the level of capability in comparison to the all Australian designed CEA technologies suite. A remarkable achievement for Australian industry.

Thank you. I hope our next generation of boys and girls consider a career in the shipbuilding industry. I feel there are many opportunities for motivated boys and girls.

HMAS Brisbane sailed to the US to undergo testing of her Aegis Combat Management System/CEC with units of the US fleet.

Clips HMAS Brisbane, built at Osborne Naval Shipyard SA, entering Papeete, Tahiti with stunning colours. The naval ships in the harbour are French.

The second clip is HMAS Brisbane docked in San Francisco Harbour for US Fleet Week celebrations. There is a clip somewhere of Brisbane underway under the Golden Gate Bridge.

I’d like to seconds that @pawsandclaws1. Very much enjoying this thread.

Wonder how the ships are removed removed from the water at the BA yard in WA? This time lapse clip is very interesting. There will be further investment in facilities at this yard for the future refitting of the Navy's new Hunter Class frigates. At 8,000t plus they represent significant growth over the Anzac frigates 3,500t.

Unfortunately not good news on the Hunter Class. AFR reports a possible 2 year delay:

The Brits history of warship construction recently has been poor noting the turbine recuperator issues on the Daring Class destroyers. I suspect UK finance may be the underlying reason for the delay. The UK construction was planned to drive the Hunter Class builds so all first of class risk is absorbed by the Royal Navy.

https://www.defense-aerospace.com/articles-view/release/3/213376/australia%27s-new-%2445bn-frigates-face-two_year-delay.html

The Hobart class destroyers will undergo Aegis upgrade to Baseline 9 - Ballistic Missile Defence capability from 2024. This includes the fitment of the Australian designed Saab tactical interface planned for the Hunters.

The Anzac Class are undergoing major modernisationand upgrades now so their service life should be able to be extended.
