Roosters pursue Tigers captain Aaron Woods as possible package deal with James Tedesco

THE Sydney Roosters first launched an audacious bid to sign Wests Tigers star James Tedesco — now the Bondi club plan to pursue team-mate Aaron Woods.

The Daily Telegraph understands Woods has been offered to the Roosters — and there is interest.

It could mean the Sydney Roosters pinch the prop and fullback Tedesco from Concord as a package. The pair are worth a combined annual salary of around $2 million.

DOG HUNT: Wests Tigers chase Josh Reynolds to replace Mitch Moses

The Roosters are pushing to sign Tigers duo James Tedesco and Aaron Woods
Canterbury however can’t be discounted. The Bulldogs have prepared substantial four-year offers for Tedesco and Woods and remain slight favourites ahead of the Roosters.

Woods is Wests Tigers through and through but is considering quitting the club for a more glamorous spot at either the Bulldogs or Roosters.

Wests Tigers have also put forward lucrative offers to Tedesco and Woods and remain hopeful, rather than confident, of retaining the pair. The club’s upset win over North Queensland may have boosted their chances of re-signing both players.

It is likely now that Tedesco and Woods will play together at either Wests Tigers, Canterbury or Sydney Roosters.

It is understood the Bulldogs will meet with the management of Tedesco and Woods tomorrow to nail down official four-year offers.

The Tigers skipper may be looking elsewhere for the 2018 season
Canterbury would however be forced to offload several players to sign Woods and Tedesco. Some names already touted include Will Hopoate, Josh Reynolds and James Graham.

Graham is a club favourite and would be difficult to cull although Newcastle has expressed an early interest should the English forward be squeezed out of Belmore.

The Daily Telegraph reached out to Roosters coach Trent Robinson for comment about Woods but he did not respond.

Last week, Robinson told The Daily Telegraph he “wouldn’t talk about recruitment.”

“I can’t help out,” Robinson texted.

Des Hasler has reportedly made a big play for the star Tigers pair
Wests Tigers will target Josh Dugan, Cooper Cronk, Shaun Johnson and Gareth Widdop if the club has additional money to spend through the possible exit of Moses, Woods and Tedesco.

Speculation mounted yesterday that Mitch Moses was considering backflipping on his Eels deal to remain at Wests Tigers but this was denied by his management.

There was additional rumours that halfback Luke Brooks wanted to renege on his Wests Tigers deal and shift to Melbourne as a replacement for departing Cooper Cronk. This was also denied.

The rugby league rumour mill has been overdrive with Kieran Foran still heavily linked to Canterbury. Foran wants to return to Sydney to be closer to his young family. Some close to the star player though feel he could avoid the spotlight and limelight of Sydney by remaining in Auckland for another year or two.

Whenever I see The Daily Telegraph understands the word oxymoron always springs to mind…

My info on the Dogs is usually spot on and from what I hear they have an agreement with Woods. They believe their agent is pushing Teddy the same way however, he prefers to go to the Roosters or resign at the Tigers but won't if Woods leaves.

I also hear their agent does not want the players genuinely at WT and is using the Simona scandal and bad club perception to get buy in on the switch from the players and those close to them. They are young guys so parents may also be concerned.

I believe Tigers management would be aware and I have been inferring on other posts WT should do a deal quickly with the Roosters for both players. They will take Woods to get Tedesco and would need to unload players to do so. They have more to give.

I can't disclose who as I have a professional relationship with the person who has a relationship with the club. I hope I'm misinformed but upon research the agent has players Cameron Smith, Bromwich, On the books who have taken unders to stay at the Storm. I don't sense the same co operative dealings with WT.

That'll be nice - it will go with his grub of the century award.

Hope both awards are worth some money

He could sell them and pay his US victims

Lolohea kicks goals there was talk he was going to the Broncos next year to play 5/8 and I don't think he has a contact for next year

He does but his future at the Warriors looks pretty bleak. So it might not take much to secure his release. He'd be the best option imo.

They also have the wiz kid Ata Hingano maybe pinch him play him at 5/8

Idk, I'd rather an old head like Widdop in the halves. Seems like ages since we've had one.

Anasta

Old head and old body to match! At least Widdop can still play.

I don't want to big up Anasta, but I don't think it's any coincidence that Brooks played his best football alongside him.

St George Illawarra urged to re-sign Gareth Widdop as Wests Tigers circle

By Stuart Honeysett

St George Illawarra has been urged to re-sign captain Gareth Widdop with Wests Tigers rapidly circling the in-form Dragons playmaker as a replacement for Parramatta-bound Mitchell Moses.

The Tigers are quickly moving to a "Plan B" scenario with concerns that fullback James Tedesco and captain Aaron Woods will also follow Moses out the door, with the only member of "The Big Four" at the moment who has agreed to stay on next season being halfback Luke Brooks.

The Dragons are keen to retain Widdop but face a battle with fullback Josh Dugan also off contract and the club already having paid out big money to recruit Brisbane's Ben Hunt for next season. Paul Vaughan was also lured from Canberra this year while Jack De Belin recently re-signed.

The Tigers have also been linked to Shaun Johnson and Josh Reynolds but Widdop is more of a priority as he is seen as more of a steadying influence to partner Brooks in the halves. The Tigers have also been linked to prop Ben Matulino if Wood elects to leave.

The Widdop situation is reflective of the volatile market at the moment with a number of quality players coming off contract at the end of this year including Woods, Brooks, Moses, Tedesco, Johnson, Widdop, Dugan, Reynolds, Kieran Foran, Jack Bird, and Chad Townsend.

No one is going to come to this club wi5h ots currentbhistory

I don't think it's a stretch to think Widdop would come here. I doubt Saints will be willing to pay him what we'd be offering.

Good until the end. I suspect Widdop's final comment would be "Who?"

Tedesco is younger and at the moment better FB than Boyd and Slater, he is also more complete player than any of them.

Re: Woods, interesting that Hasler (who many on this forum rank next to Ballamy) is willing to pay for Woods $ 900k, and he has there Graham, Tomlin, Kasiano, Klammer etc. ?? Pleaser explain.

Woods (with a help from Seumanufagai) for the last 4-5 years, runs over 160 m per seasons, with 3 missed tackles on average. He often does the job for at least 3 other forwards at Tigers, see for example meters run by Grant, Lawrence and Aloiai against cowgirls.
In the long run, stats don't lie.
What we need is 2 more props who can average at least 100m per game with less than 3 missed tackle per game, Falise, Tatola or …?

Slater is at the end of his career, and Tedesco is no where near as good as Slater was in his prime. Slater was so consistent week in week out. He may get there but has a while to go yet. As for Boyd I don't like the bloke but once again he is a complete footy player and deserves the Aussie fullback position.

Agree with you Muffstar. Slater is the best fullback I have had the pleasure to watch and Boyd is next in line,

He's already left a better club, where he was happy, for more money. He could do it again.

It comes down to money, we can offer well over what Saints can. Widdop also apperantly has had an offer sheet infront of him for months but his issue like Dugan is the offer is less than what they are on now and length of deal.

Dragons will have to make a very tough choice as they played their cards to get hunt & vaughn and now they have run out of cash.

We could get a few from the Dragons with Milne, Widdop, Packer & Dugan for less than retaining our big 3 whilst pag more than the Dragons.

I would go hard for Widdop right now.
