Yeah I get the sentiment regarding sensible cap spending and agree. But we need success and to get success we need a few marquee players. Currently I’d argue we don’t have any.
I would agree here.
We have …...
Brooks
Mbye
Reynolds
Packer
Matterson
Marsters
Where’s the Marquee player?
There’s a good bunch of players in there that are taking a big bite out of the salary.
Trimming the teams wage to chase a big fish is what we need to do.......in my opinion.
I like all the players I mentioned, but to get a great player here trim one of these guys and go large.
Well I'd personally say Mbye is a marquee player - cut above your standard FGer and on the verge of Origin selection. And Luke Brooks, not enough people rate him, but being the reigning Dally M HB of the year has to count for something. Farah, even at his best, was only ever Dally M hooker of the year twice.
And then I'd ask you - when ever were the Tigers signing marquee players? I mean players at the top of their game, not looking for a fresh start or a new opportunity - top of the line, best players in the comp in their position. Terry Hill? Past his best in 2000\. Adam Blair counts and that was a flop. Lote Tuqiri counts I think as well, insofar as he was a returning star but with unknown capacity to still perform in rugby league. Gareth Ellis ended up being marquee, but at the time we signed him, he was not proven internationally and unknown to many NRL fans. I wouldn't count Scott Prince either - he got to his best, but when signed he was struggling off the back of 2 broken legs.
So if we count Blair, Ellis and Tuqiri, that's 3 truly marquee players signed in the last 19 seasons. So of course I'd love more marquee players, but it's just not something the Tigers do, apparently not something the Tigers CAN do. We don't compete in that space. I'd love to, but first I'd love to get a good team across the paddock that competes for the finals, improve finances and facilities, then after sustained success we can dream about the Roosters-style top signings.
Or we can continue to create marquee players from juniors, which has happened a lot.
