I just wanted to read a thread that didnt have negative Jason Taylor comments.

Can you believe I have never watched a star wars movie and im 46\. So my question is, should i start from the start and watch them in order they wete released, or in the order of the story. I understand they are a bit jumbled. …

I was pretty much the same Swordy - couldn't understand all the hype around Star Wars when it came out in the 70s, hence I stayed well away from it. I probably saw bits and pieces of the movies at friend's places, throughout the years, but never really intentionally sat down and watched an episode, let alone the whole trilogy.

However, when the prequels came out many years later I decided to check them out - so glad I did. I recommend seeing the prequels first before watching the much lauded 70's trilogy - it will make a whole lot more sense this way, though watching the pitiful light sabre fights of the 1970s after the amazing ones in the prequels will probably be a bit of a let down  The technology may go backwards watching it in this order, but the story-line is so much more interesting and intriguing.

Yes you should…the order is up for debate...I would go by release date,,,New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi....then 1 2 3,,,

The original trilogy may appear dated effects wise by todays standards but the story telling and character development is far superior...Empire is by far the best of all the movies IMO...

Visually Ep 1 2 and 3 are superior to the Original but George lost the plot ...literally with the story with so many inaccuracies...Effects wise the are spectacular..

I like CB hope that Abrahms and Disney don't stuff Force awakens Trek style...

4,5,6,1,2,3 would be my recommendation. While i love all 6 movies i just think it would work better to watch the originals and best first then the prequels to fill the gaps. Just my thoughts.

Well the one that sticks in my craw the most is when Luke is questioning Leia in Return of the Jedi about her Mother … LUKE Leia... do you remember your mother? Your real mother?
LEIA Just a little bit. She died when I was very young.
LUKE What do you remember?
LEIA Just...images, really. Feelings.
LUKE Tell me.
LEIA (a little surprised at his insistence) She was very beautiful. Kind, but...sad.
(looks up)
Why are you asking me all this? He looks away.
LUKE I have no memory of my mother. I never knew her.

In Sith Padme died in Child birth..

There are others such as the Jedi the most powerful force in the Universe unable to detect a Sith under there noses...until it was well to late...

Anikins turning to the dark side also strayed from the way Obi Won describes it to Luke in a New Hope originally and how he took him as a padawan was not by choice but rather as a promise to Qui-Gon Jinn,,,

I'd go in order of the story …

1\. The phantom menace
2\. Attack of the clones
3\. Revenge of the sith
4\. A new hope
5\. Empire strikes back
6\. Return of the Jedi

yep you'll be better off watching in order of release, starting off with Ep 4 A New Hope, Ep 5 Empire and Ep 6 Return. If you can find them, get the original movies and not the Special Editions too.

Not sure there's much point in watching the first 3 to be honest, you'll understand why when you watch them in release date order, the original trilogy is superior in every way bar special effects and quite frankly, I don't think the prequels really add anything significant except for some history on the Clone Wars.

Leia has the force too, so maybe she saw the force projection of her mother, like Luke sees Obi-Wan after he dies, but she didn't understand it.

Nice Theory but my understanding is Only Jedi/Sith can project themselves from the dead as Yoda explained to Obi Won on him going into exile with his Old friend Qui-Gon Jinn…Padme was not one with such force powers...

Anyone who wants to watch for the first time, I suggest the "Machete" order.

IV, V, (I,) II, III and VI.

Why? You don't ruin the original story arc of the original trilogy, and after the revelations in V, II and III can be watched as a flashback of sorts, with VI rounding out the series.

Watching them in release order is good, but leaves you feeling a bit deflated by watching the visually superior but infinitely weaker storyline of the first three episodes last.

Watching them in episode order ruins the later episodes revelations and leaves no surprises. The theory behind the Machete order is that because Lucas always said that Star Wars is about Anakin rather than Luke, the Machete order changes that so that the story arc revolves around Luke rather than Anakin. The Machete order normally involves leaving the Phantom Menance out. Episode one is essentially irrelevant, but you could include that before episode two if you are obsessive compulsive and feel you must absolutely watch it.
