Wests Tigers paid the ultimate price for releasing a future star they never wanted to let go. This is the story of how Ryan Papenhuyzen endured several setbacks to finally emerge as one of the game’s best fullbacks.

Many won't agree but I always viewed him as having a higher ceiling than Tedesco.

You are correct, many won't agree. In fact I'd say most won't agree.

Interesting over the last few days in my area I have heard it expressed that Papenhuyzen may emerge as the best. Admittedly it is whispered as though this type of view should not be expressed.

I wonder why Storm got so excited over Paps, but had no love for Teddy?

The Storm pencil in names well before they are recruited. They are excellent at identifying and recruiting the best.

“”After being signed by the Tigers and impressing with the SG Ball side, Papenhuyzen came to the attention of Storm recruitment chief Paul Bunn.

The night before the Storm's 19-18 over Wests Tigers in round seven, 2016 there was excitement in the air at the Novotel in Darling Harbour.

Bunn was preparing to show coach Craig Bellamy and director of football Frank Ponissi a rare talent. The air crackled with the energy that their target now displays in a purple jersey.

"Paul Bunn and all his scouts were in Sydney and the night before we played the Tigers he showed all the coaches highlights of this young bloke that Paul and his all scouts were keen on," Ponissi told NRL.com.””

The Storm recruitment staff could see it, but all we get is he is too small and injury prone. We should have told Tedesco to go and join his feathered friends and gone all out for Papenhuyzen. It makes me so frustrated.

I know someone who's nephew was one time in the Storm system. The difference and professionalism between the Storm and other clubs is huge. There is no surprise Storm get the players they want and have the right structures and professionals in place to achieve ongoing success. Papps was identified along with Drinkwater as potential successors to Slater. They both knew they had to bide their time in lower grades but when you have stars like Slater, Smith, Cronk to learn off of and the best medical team to assist with hamstrings why wouldn't you want to go there. Bellamy personally meets the player and his family and all their big stars give you personalised tours of the place and discuss your opportunities. This is where WT are not in the same ball park. Papps given what Storm could offer him was a no brainer decision.

The Storm also scout in places other clubs haven't even thought of. Back in 2011, they offered the now Otago rugby union captain, Michael Collins, who was still in school, an opportunity to train and trial with their U20s. He turned it down as he saw better opportunity sticking with union. Dunedin, New Zealand is a pretty backwater place to be looking for rugby league players.

Even though they didn't get their man, the fact that Melbourne even had scouts there in the first place is crazy. That region of NZ is a union stronghold. There is almost zero league being played there.

Rugby and the waratahs also had a good look at Paps at the time when he was starring for Oakhill college rugby. If tedesco had made a decision earlier we may well have kept Paps

Tedesco did make a decision earlier. In 2014 he signed with Canberra. He played his hand. Obviously those responsible for recruitment and retention didn’t hear the alarm bell. Anyway, I always thought managing the cap is a job for professionals. So too is having a plan B if a spine player is injured or leaves.

I am sure that this forum contains 90% of 'crying over a spilt milk' and 'dreaming, wishful thinking'. :mask:

Yes, when they show you whom they are, believe them!

Teddy didn’t get a lot of coaching moving up to NRL, which is surprising given we had a two times Dally M winning fullback as coach.
Followed by Taylor, a very good goal kicking half, who single handed lay managed to make our halves mediocre and our kickers even worse. When you think about the last decade in terms of what can be written on one page it tells a story of gross incompetence and or lack of care.

The Papenhuyzen decision

sounds like a hollywood block buster... but really about someone who has had a good 18 months.

On the verge of Origin selection. One of our best juniors ever.

Are we still talking about this?

How long until this goes into the general rugby league section or the lament thread? Nothing to do with contracts and signings for Wests Tigers.

You've got issues if you're still smarting over this decision. It happened, let it go and if you can't, seek help.

I’m still smarting over Tedesco personally.

I know who I'd rather have back.

And anyway it's the Tedesco decision/outcome that caused the Papenhuyzen outcome.

It’s pretty clear cut given one of the players has since won 2 comps, the Dally M and the Wally Lewis medal for best player in origin.
