The Papenhuyzen decision...

Some of it also determined by the stocks you have as well - eg if you’re chock full of outside backs you might need to make a tough call. Every club has had a youngster get away that proved them wrong, trick is for WTs to get the strike rate up in coming years.

How do you determine which juniours to keep and which to let go?

Is it size? Papenhuyzen and Mullaney were small Liolavave, Tatola and Paseka were massive.
Is it injury?Papenhuyzen, Benji, Tedesco and Milone all missed significant periods due to injury.

We should come up with a criteria (like the plodder scale) that determines which juniors should be kept.

These criteria can be known as "The Papenhuyzen Principles".

Brooks was loyal to stay and Moses got what he deserved last night bundled out in straight sets.

Neither player has lived up to expectations from both clubs and expectations on themselves, only player to do this is Tedesco.

No, Papenhuyzen has been simply outstanding and imo is our best junior we have let slip.

Command overload?

Master alarm.

Highly doubt he'll be back ...lets move on and hope we don't miss the next big thing coming through

Remember SBW having a Handshake agreement with Unkle Nick.
5 years later he is playing for the Roosters.

My point, he burned his Bridges with the Bulldogs. Or did the Bulldogs burn them?

Both Tedesco and Papenheusen would be welcomed back in the off chance they came off contract.

Likewise Aaron Woods, Andrew Fifita and were about to bring back JAC.

We should leave doors slightly ajar. Players can have a 12+ year playing career and single player clubs are going to be rarer and rarer. Talent will leave. Lets work on options for Talent to come back.

Wests Tigers paid the ultimate price for releasing a future star they never wanted to let go. This is the story of how Ryan Papenhuyzen endured several setbacks to finally emerge as one of the game’s best fullbacks.

Many won't agree but I always viewed him as having a higher ceiling than Tedesco.

All of our rejects thump us on game day , just to remind us of their disagreement with our assessment of their playing future. Paps is no different. Round 10, last season, that 80 mt try had a tone of, “I still don’t agree” written all over it. He was at the Eels before coming to WT . They told him he was too skinny. Paps let them know by knocking them out of the finals with a MoM performance. The scary thing is..He’s not on his own.

You are correct, many won't agree. In fact I'd say most won't agree.

I know someone who's nephew was one time in the Storm system. The difference and professionalism between the Storm and other clubs is huge. There is no surprise Storm get the players they want and have the right structures and professionals in place to achieve ongoing success. Papps was identified along with Drinkwater as potential successors to Slater. They both knew they had to bide their time in lower grades but when you have stars like Slater, Smith, Cronk to learn off of and the best medical team to assist with hamstrings why wouldn't you want to go there. Bellamy personally meets the player and his family and all their big stars give you personalised tours of the place and discuss your opportunities. This is where WT are not in the same ball park. Papps given what Storm could offer him was a no brainer decision.

Yep sure, Paul Bunn has done a marvellous job spotting good talent for the Storm, but we don’t have anyone in that roll at the WT. you mention Billy Slater’s roll in fast tracking Paps skill sets, sure, just as Minechello tutored Teddy. But again what can we do about that. Players like Gary Jack aren’t allowed to get involved. It’s not that we don’t have good people. We just don’t have the money that Storm have.

I think Brett Hodgson was with us when we had Tedesco, so it is not like we did not have an ex-star FB.

Did Hodgo do any work in that area? I think he has now left the club? What was Hodgo’s job title and job description?

He was ISP coach. The team looked disjointed but that could be attributed to losing players to the NRL team.

Papenhuyzen is very Slater like, for obvious reasons. Minichello was also a WTs' junior whom reivented himself as a Bondi boy.

Yeh, I could see the chooks had Teddy putting less focus on playmaking, and more defensive organisation in his first season.

Interesting over the last few days in my area I have heard it expressed that Papenhuyzen may emerge as the best. Admittedly it is whispered as though this type of view should not be expressed.

I'd not be surprised if the Roosters try sign him and move Tedesco to the halves.

A friend used to live on Glebe Pt Rd, near the Hoads. He believes to this day Hoad was a far better amateur tennis player than Rosewell.
