Time for a Keep Blake Austin thread yet ?

There are some strange views being expressed in this thread. Austin has a contract for next year with Weststigers. Weststigers offered him a two year contract, taking a risk on some aspects of him playing for us, not the least of which was whether he would perform successfully at NRL level. The fact that he has performed well, and now allegedly wants to move to Canberra next year to play 5/8 seems to some to open the Tigers to some moral obligation to let him go. I reckon that is rubbish. We took a risk on him; he needs to see the second year through with us, and if he wants to go to Canberra after that then so be it. I cant imagine that this is actually what is going on - sounds as if the reporting of this has got confused - as usual.

As I was trying to state, maybe unsuccessfully above

If our club starts bowing down to the moral reasons we should let a player go (whilst under contract) to further his prospects WE ARE GONE . What other team would do that. What's the point of taking a risk on somebody when/if they come good and then grant them a release.

100% with you pymble.
We took the risk on him and he happily signed a 2 year contract.
Earlier in the year he said he just wanted to get a spot in first grade - latest reports say he doesn't want to stay unless he plays 5/8.
Two words - bad luck!
What happens if we are as caring as some want and tell him he can break his contract and go somewhere else and Brooks or Moses (or both) get injured early in the year?
Will they still be happy we let him go as he carves up our reserve grade halves?

I'm concerned CK

I actually agree 100% with you

You want Austin , you can compensate us Raiders

Look at our injury list year on year , sorry Blake you can outplay Mitch and the jerseys yours

If not , you will be a valuable bench player at the Tigers improving your worth for the 2016 season by getting the Tigers into the semis

We are the good guys of the NRL,give us a good reason and we will give you a release.

We let Koro go, thought we would give him and the Storm a leg up, now it's Canberra's turn, they have being doing it tuff so let's give them a hand.

Is their any wonder why we are where we are!!!!!!The new board will need a bag full of magic turn our club around

Do you think Austin has first crack at the six at this point? Surely he must.

No.

I know he is the flavour of the month but he has no passing game and no kicking game. He should not play in the halves. He is a good ball runner but disrupts rhythm and structure.

I wouldn't release him though, purely because the chance of us playing our first choice halves for an entire season is virtually 10,000/1\. So he will play plenty of games as he is a good utility.

Great post hybrid and we'll said. However I think he is already gone for 2015 and I assume it is because the club are looking at the bigger picture.

The dragons and raiders have already admitted to a clean out, and I expect the broncos will release a few too. There will be quality players available over the next few weeks and I believe we will sign a few players at seasons end once coaching issue is sorted.

Yes sure a clean out is good once in a while (especially the "executives") however hasn't anybody heard of a depth chart?

Considering the amount of injuries we seem to have year on year we need coverage across all positions of NRL quality - just like the top teams have - and one of the most cost effective ways to achieve that is to find and KEEP players who are genuine utility players of NRL standard - Blake has turned out to be one of them

As another poster said, what are the odds that our 6 or 7 will play all 26 rounds next year? Not bloody likely!!

And besides, Blake is contracted for 2015\. Upgrade him $$ as a reward for his efforts this year.

Many of the top coaches talk about turning over about 20% of your roster every season

But I'm not into turning over arguably our best player of the season

I understand what your saying Hybrid , but you must admit he is worth spending 12 months with improving his kicking and passing game

I honestly can't see Moses reaching Austin's level of performance by the end of 2015 anyway

You just never know , his hands just might improve with the right person spending time with him and then he probably becomes the best half at our club

What some need to understand is when you have a major strength like Austin's running game , you tend not to concentrate on passing game especially when you are tearing it up at NYC and NSW Cup level and perhaps you don't listen to the good advice that's coming at that level

Now he has reached a level where he can't just survive off his running game he starts to work on his passing game and kicking game

If that clicks , watch out , as I said he will quickly overtake Brooks as the best half prospect at the WT's

If his passing game reaches the same level as Brooks , he could quite easily be the next JT

That's why we shouldn't even consider letting him go

Austin's effort, week after week, was one of the highlights of the season for me. When nobody else was able to do anything, he usually found a way. He played with so much heart and determination.

But if we keep him for next year and he doesn't want to be here, will the heart and determination be here?

Letting Blake go is pure madness. I'd start him at 5/8 next year, but no guarantee of keeping it. If the board releases him it will undermine the free goodwill they get as a new board.

I think you have things around the wrong way, happy.
Moses only ended up with a few games at 5/8 this year and you can already see he's much better at reading the play and finding a hole for his runners than Brooks (this part of the game is still non-existent for Austin).
He can also open up a team when he takes on the line.
Plus the kid has no fear and goes out of his way to put himself in harms way in defence.
If anybody's going the be the next JT it will be him.
Austin is a great ball runner but, at this stage of his game, doesn't look for his teammates.
He should be made to stay and be sitting on the bench and coming on as an attacking weapon for mine.

I don't think I have CK

Moses's running game won't get near Austin's

You can learn to improve your hands and he does seem to have good vision because he can finds holes in a defensive line that know he has a limited passing game

If Austin can find the holes he can put people in those same holes if he develops his passing game

Funny last night I had a look at the highlights of all our games for this season on NRL.com, now granted they are only a three minute grab of each game but you would be surprised how many quality balls Austen layed on that resulted in four pointers. His passing game is way better than a lot of people think. It may not be flamboyant and flashy like Benji, but it is effective.

It also has to be noted that Brooks and Farah were being used as the play makers in most games. Anyway I just think its madness to release a quality footballer who can play basically every position when he is almost certain to get a start every week just through injuries alone.

Also someone posted the Dragons and Canberra are having clean outs so a quality player might fall into our laps, what quality players are they going to release????????
