Uate?

Whatever happened to him?
A few years ago he was one of the best wingers in the comp…now he's playing ISP most weeks.
Anyway, I would rather ensure we have ET signed up first before anything else.

I wouldn't touch him with a 10000 foot pole, at least not until we re-sign Taylor. If we keep signing nobodies then we won't have enough cap space for the one player who's been so crucial to our success this year!

Can you imagine Uate and Naiqama defending alongside one another? I think i'd have to jump the fence and start tackling the opposition myself!

If, it was for this year only and was for maybe 50k or less, as a backup who would play NSW Cup and only be considered for NRL if injuries hit then maybe.

Thought you couldn't swap clubs after June 30 though?

Apparently not in best terms with Brown.
One thing for sure he has talent, in a slump atm.
Needs to get out of that team, he will make a huge impact when he moves to a new team.
Bit like when we get a new job, most are keen to impress.

I wont mind him, at the right price tag and after we have secured ET
Uate always comes in to help his forwards from dummy half, similar to Nofo

He plays on the right, doesn't he? Would be interesting to see who would swap out of Uate and Dave.

both are fijians, there wont be excuse of communication breakdown (one would hope)

Not sure if Kevvy really knows the language though, except for hi hello and wheres the grog

I like Uate I think he'll impress if given the opportunity to switch clubs. The max I would go with him is 250k with Knights paying the rest. According to Willow, Uate and Kev are mates and Naquima is trying to bring him down.

Uate as I said earlier really helps the forwards out with his running from early sets with his strong runs tiring the defence giving the backs and forwards some space to work around.

A possible backline like this looks the goods.

1\. James Tedesco
2\. David Nofaluma
3\. Kevin Naquima
4\. Tim Simona
5\. Akuila Uate

So Newcastle, without doubt the worst team in the comp this year, drop one of their highest paid players to NSW CUP and barely any ripples are made in the media…..no speculation, no criticism…nothing….its just accepted that the coach has the right to pick and choose the team

Yet with JT and the Tigers the media just love to scrutinise and speculate every move JT makes with the team….not fair game IMO

Pretty poor comparison.
Uate is playing poorly in a bad team.
Taylor is mucking around a current SOO player, life member and (former) captain.

Agree. Chalk and Cheese!

Rubbish!!!!

He is not mucking Farah around at all. He picks him on the bench and to my mind he is playing better at the end of games than previously. Win, Win.

Just curious. Would people on here prefer we re-sign Elijah Taylor, or sign Uate?

Obviously ET is priority, I can't see why we can't do both though.

Farah has a lot to thank Taylor for.. IMO Taylor has resurrected Farahs career by having the balls to play him off the bench . Laugh if you like Farah is not an 80min player anymore the downside is he is being paid a Million bucks a year to be a sub!

Sign them both Uate would not be asking to much and he has a huge upside if someone can get his footy head together.

If we've already signed up about 22 players for next season then there isn't much cap space left in our top 25!! Unless of course Robbie goes, but I don't to make this another thread about him.

People say sign Uate for $250k? How much do you think Taylor is asking? 250k is a LOT when it comes to our cap.

If we're struggling to find the cash to re-sign Taylor and sign a couple of other cheap players that 250k to sign Uate means that we most likely won't be able to sign Taylor and will be scrapping the barrel with the other players.

I'm just going to guess numbers to illustrate. Given we have 22 players on contract for 2017 we'd have say around 600k left in next years cap as it stands. If Elijah Taylor wants say 450k then we could sign him and 2 others for the minimum cap hit of 80k to round out our top 25\. It may be that we offer ET 400 so we can sighn 2 others for 120k. If we sign Uate for 250k then we'd have 350k left for Taylor, which would probably see him walk.

Unless Uate is signing on a minimum contract under our cap (ie Knights still paying him 400k+) then we just can't afford to sign him unless we release players to free up more cap space.

The likes of Brooks, Moses and Sirro taking their year extensions, rather than accepting re-negotiated longer term deals has hurt us a lot as these options are significantly above market rates and means we have less cash to spend on the rest of the squad now.

TPA's can be the X factor if we can get them though.

Well looking at our squad for next year we have 20/21 signed up depending on if Liddle is NSW Cup contract for next yr or bottom of NRL. We have 13 forwards including Liddle and ET would make 14.

We only have the starting backline signed up and Chee-Kam who can play backs and forwards plus we have some great young forwards coming through. To me it seems we are only really looking for backs

Now the position open in FG is 1 winger which is Rankins spot really. So we need to fill 2 outside back spots for next year plus a back up in the halves to take us to our 25 assuming Robbie stays and Liddle is in the 25 replacing Halatau

Given that I'd say we might be interested in Uate

Advantages
- Will be 29 so still a couple of years left in him
- 160 + FG games plus Origin so plenty of experience in a young team
- 110 tries in those games so knows how to find the line
- While he has had problems this yr last year he played 22 games, 20 line breaks, 12 tries, 76 tackle breaks and that in a team running last
- Knights would be paying a lot of his salary still
- Really strong runner esp returning kicks and try scorer

Disadvantages
- Hasnt had a great 2016 but partly driven by disagreement with the coach it seems who doesen't want to be apying him asmuch as he is more then form
- Makes 1 error per game (but then again thats better then Nofa or Ado_Carr)
- Defence has always been hsi weakness and its where we suffer
- Not the best under the hgih ball sometimes although every winger has that issue I suppose

Whoever suggested Rona - now he would be more like it. As for Uate - I am sick of the Tigers buying tired, old, non performing backs who have lost the hunger. I'd rather find a young gun with genuine speed and develop him (although we that opportunity with JAC).
As for the suggestion in the early posts that it was somehow either ET or Uate - how is that even worth considering? I'd be signing ET to a new 3 year deal right now.

I'm mates with Ali, and he's telling me that blocking the deal is not about the contract money and that there's more to it.

He tells me it's a chance he will come but there's a TWIST and he won't tell me yet, he'll put it on his page soon

I know Ali isn't the most trusted bloke but he doesn't BS me.

Willow mate, is there something you're hiding? Lol

I can't add too much more. I have heard he is keen, he has spoken with Naiqama at length and the finances are being discussed, as to how much each club pays…My source is a Fijian whom I work with and previously played State Cup. He knows most of the Fijians running around in the comp, but like most Fijians, is pretty quiet so getting finer details out of him presents its own set of challenges!
