Utai hopes for Wests Tigers lifeline

I don't get what the big deal is? If we sign him it is going to cost $5 and will hardly impact if he doesn't get a run. If we are suddenly low on depth it will be a masterstroke.

I think we have proven since Sheens took over that we take fairly good risks (e.g. Pat Richards, Whatuira, Galloway, Brown) and don't pay overs for mediocre players.

I think a few are worried that Utai will get a look in ahead of promising juniors, and others are blinded by their hatred for the Dogs.

Sheens has made a few good finds in his time, but he's made a few clangers as well.

lets at least get him through the first trial match, then lets see how he goes.

for all we know, Utai could score 5 tries against the cowgirls, and single handedly become another Sheens masterstroke. If he's a nuffy, he'll be found out. sheens and folkes aren't mugs.

Agreed.

I don't understand the interest in Utai but I,m one that thinks you should be given the opportunity to show if you have the goods the guy has expieriance whether he still has the goods remains to be seen but he is being given the opportunity so who knows .

actually we have paid overs for mediocre players quite a few times whilst sheens has been here but i am not worried about this signing because they said it would only be a second-tier contract with utai anyway

I agree with you in that he deserves an opportunity but not over the ones that have already proven they have the goods ie Brown and Daniela.
I'm not ready to crucify anyone over his signing until he actually takes the field.

Stick to the topic please and stop the Fitzhenry bashing. He's no longer at the club so let it go and discuss the merits of signing Utai.

Hmmm…I'm struggling.........

Ive tried to stay away from this subject, but now that he has signed on ill add my 2 cents worth.

And im sorry to say my 2 cents worth confuses me, so i dont know how any of u will take it.

When Utai was first mentioned i thought centre…........dont know why, but now i see he's been picked there for the first trial. Is it good? I have no idea.

The only strong opinion i have on the matter is this...........Matt Utai must NOT get selected ahead of any young players that may be doing just a good a job as he is. So, if Daniela, Brown, Latu etc etc are playing well, then they must get first crack if injuries occur. If Utai gets a chance in the back end of the season and plays well, then no harm is done as we havent lost anyone to get him.

so hes signed then? im 50/50 on this signing he will be 30 in may we have so many good young players give them a crack he was a good player a few years back not so sure now? so if hes signed is this the end of the tank? i hope not….

If he fair dinkum wants to play FG again and busts his rear end in reserve grade, then at the very least he'll keep our first choice outside backs honest.. having a bunch of players ready to step up and take your place in FG if your performances arn't up to standard can be a great motivator for form reversal, look at he effect it had on Blake Ayshford late in the season when Sheensy told him he was one more bad performance away from being dropped.

IMHO, I dont think Utai will see any first grade this year..

yeah i watched him play for auburn around 5/6 months ago….
... he turned up to the ground eating a hamburger ??....
and he wasnt fast at all, and wasnt that good under the high ball...
... then again that was about 6 months ago so things may have changed...

I just hope that since this is the 1 guy Folkes has brought to the club that he doesn't try to push Sheensy's hand to give him a spot in 1st grade.
