We need a goalkicker

AT the end of last year I counted the amount of games we lost where we scored the same amoutn of tries as the opposition and i think it was 5, compared to 0 won for us.

Examples off top of my head was we got beat by the Dogs at Telstra when I think we even scored more tries than them, and we lost to parra at the sfs 26-18 when it was 4 tries all.

This year we just have to suck it up. Benji is obviously the best option otherwise wed of given it to someone else. As for next year we seriously need to look at a goalkicker, who i dont know. Someone like Inu wouldnt be bad. You could guarantee him a spot in the team somewhere im sure and he kicks well.

goal kicking is not good. but how long can we give him? last year its cost us games, can we afford to lose more close ones this year? i think not.

Worst thing about tonight is none of the misses really looked like going through the posts. I've always thought he was a reasonable kicker rather than a brilliant. I'd think it was at the lower end of 1st choice kickers. Jamie Soward had a shocker tonight as well with his goal kicking.

To be fair it was gallant who cost us the dogs game with his kicking. Benji however is not kicking well at all, and last year he was very inconsistent.

Tim, come on it's time to get another Goal kicker.

Said the same thing at the game. Benji's just not good enough with the boot :frowning:

many moons ago Lote used to kick goals

including a 7 from 9 against the eagles in 2002

& even some goals for Qld in an origin game .

I wonder if he can still do it .

That last attempt at goal was awful. Didn't even appear that he aimed it at the posts.

Memory could be like way off here, but there was a game in 2007 at Carrera, where to win the game someone did the goal kicking from the sideline. It was like a 1 off, random thing. Was it Lawrence?

original post is very astute imo. personally, i think marshall is a good goal kicker but with all the out wide tries they score, and are always likely to with the game they play, they do need a very good kicker to get those valuable 2 points at least half the time.

i didnt think too much about that last kick at all - the game was over and he had just run 90m to score so i doubt he was completely focused on it. still, as mentioned, it cant be ignored and at seasons end they could miss out on a spot by those 2 points in for and against.

i think moltzen should take over. hasnt he done so and quite well before? marshall is doing more than enough without having to kick as well - would much rather he saves his legs for those 90m specials.

Cnon lets face facts….Benji WILL cost the team at LEAST 2 or more games kicking at those percentages.....He MUST be replaced as our full time kicker, especially after his own 80 m run tries.

That is why, even though I knew Ryan wouldn't let the team down at fullback, it is my recommendation of putting in Meaney at Fullback and goalkicker, and PLEASE 😛ray: Beau Ryan replacing Brown on the wing .

Fulton coming on the bench and replacing Fitzy, and we really have a great team there to play Canberra next weekend

1\. Sean Meaney (GK)
2\. Lote Tuqiri
3\. Blake Ayshford
4\. Chris Lawrence
5\. Beau Ryan

6\. Benji Marshall
7\. Tim Moltzen

8\. Bryce Gibbs
9\. Robbie Farah (c)
10\. Keith Galloway
11\. Todd Payten
12\. Gareth Ellis
13\. Chris Heighington

14\. Jason Cayless
15\. Andrew Fifita
16\. Mark Flanagan
17\. Liam Fulton

I love Benji but dead set - give the goalkicking to someone else.

He is not even striking them clean anymore, that last attempt was very very poor.

He just ran 85 metres! I reckon his rib injury would have made goal kicking somewhat uncomfortable.

yeah I can't blame him for that last one, but I think they need to seriously consider another goal kicker

lets face it, we would love to have goalkicker who has a 90% success rate.
so each time you team scored it was almost guaranteed 6 points.
that would give you a massive mental edge over opponent before game started.
for the monent we do not.
Benji as stated previously is working on it, and no doubt will improve during season.
does anyone remembe, in 2005, r when Hodgo was having similar issues, he was mentored by a kicking coach, and in time, improved alot.
same will happen with benji.

I agree with you Tigerstripes…..Benji was absolutely brilliant last night, but he can't do everything. Our poor for and aginst record has bitten us on the backside in the past and I'd hate to see that happen again because of poor goalkicking. We need a goalkicker who can pop them over from the sideline coz we score most of our tries out wide. There's the problem - anyone got a solution?

I think Krisnan Inu should be our No 1 target for next season…..hes a sound goal kicker and a much better winger than Parramattas opinion of him

I'm gonna stick with benji as our kicker. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt from las night and put some blame on his ribs. With th motion of a goalkicker that would have put some discomfort into it.

Love Benj, but he's just not a great goal kicker. 66% in 2009, and terrible start to this year.
It puts too much pressure of the Tigers. Mentally, it is much harder for the opposition at 12-0, or 18-0 compared to 8-0 etc.
We either need to find another goal kicker or pay someone to come in and give Benji some intensive training. I think his sessions with JT seem to have made him worse.

Marshall's rib injury would not have helped last night. Having said that, Lazarus is the number 1 sharpshooter at the club, but with Moltzen going ok at half, Lazo will have to wait. Moltzen is an option, but I'd rate him about the same as Benji for goalkicking.

Hopefully with practice and some fine tuning Benji will come good, there will be games that the Tigers will have to grind through to win and goalkicking will be a factor.
