We need a goalkicker

No doubts Benji's got a lot of improvement in the goal kicking department. His goal ratio over last season and 3 weeks of this season would be close to 60%, i'd be sure of it. It's a big concern, hopefully it turns round because soon we might have to find a new kicker. I'm sure there'd be a group of them in training kicking, the baton may be passed on soon at this rate.

For starters I think Jason Taylor should not be aloud anywhere near benji or any other kicker in the club ever again.
just because the guy was a good player does not make him a good coach (his time at souths was evident of that). Surely there is a better kicking coach out there, Halligan, El Masri or even Joey Johns could give him a few pointers.

Benji's kicking just seems to be way off these days.
He seems to be rushing his kick and just doesn't look as confident kicking it as he has in previous years.
Maybe he just has too much on his plate guiding the team around and the kicking duties.

Someone other than Benji,

He was so tired after the last try….

Missed 8 points ... Needs tobe addressed.

Well done al round though Tigers

Maybe Meaney could come on to the wing because i wouldn't be moving Ryan from fullback.I don't think he has had a better game in first grade.
But it certinally the only area we can really say we suck at

I think Krisnan Inu should be our No 1 target for next season…..hes a sound goal kicker and a much better winger than Parramattas opinion of him

he's a great kicker - he'd be a great buy - but i dont see it happening. if only marshall could kick like Inu. Houston - we have problems!

In fairness to Benji, he had a rib cartilage injury, so that may have affected his kicking last night. But I have believed for some time now that Benji should hand the goal kicking role to someone else, Flanagan can kick, or get Lazarus in there, he sounds like he has lots of great skills that the team could use. So I agree with your post Tigerstripes that we will begin to lose games if Benji doesn't improve/continues.

This post is not about having a go at Marshall. Its a simple fact that top teams have top goalkickers.

If you look at 2005 when we won the GF, Hodgson was kicking well.

An 80% goalkicker will also win you 2-3 games just with his kicking. Remember, we have missed the 8 by 2-3 games every year.

At the moment, this isnt a huge issue. But Id hate to look back at the end of the season and realise we missed out again because of this..

My son (6 years old) and I were high fiving each other all Friday night during the win.

On Saturday night we sat down to watch the Rugby Union.

At one point the Auckland Blues were going for a penalty conversion. My son said " I hope he misses it…...like Benji"

gee what do you say to that? lol

I think marshall shouldnt be kicking even if he did improve just for the fact that you know he is going to involved in nearly every try and play for the night. The guy's got to be tired!

It would have stung if we lost that match last night by a couple of points which we could have got in conversions. But that didn't happen so im happy!

Go the tigers!!!!!!!

A friend of mine who kicked at over 90% in Fgrade rugby for quite a few season, said you can either kick or you cant and the only thing a goal kicking coach may help with is your mental preparation. He also said that he thinks Benji will develop into a top line kicker.

This may sound a little stange but I have often wondered why teams just have one goal kicker. Kickers tend to have preferred sides - and I am not referring to a left foot right foot thing here. Some right footers like to go left to right and others right to left.

The other aspect is distance. For example, if we recieved a penalty on halfway after the fulltime siren, would you give the ball to Benji or Moltz to win the game? I dont think Benji could get the distnce comfortably but Moltzen probably could. Interesting to see who would take the kick.

Wasn't Joel Caine a demon from the touchline but would regularly miss 10-15 metres either side of the post?

 Good post. Those ra ra boys really do much better overall with goal kicking. And surely its not the shape of the ball.

In Friday’s game we were up 9 nil (ironically due to Marshall’s field goal) but it should have been 13 nil. Our goal kicking efforts made a solid win look more marginal that it should have. IMO Marshall has already the huge burden of carrying the side to tries, and it is another responsibility that could take away his confidence if he doesn’t perform (only player of his calibre that did kick well that comes to mind is Joey). Why bring Marshall up to speed with Taylor? Surely there is another 66% kicker in the team that we can mentor to relieve Benji of this burden and let him focus on scoring tries and winning the Dally M?

So can someone clarify all of this Flanagan talk around the forum. I hear he can kick, but did he kick in the Super League, and if so, what were his stats? After last night’s game, and if he can kick 75% +, I would be happy to see him start each game

The last kick he shouldn't have taken he was clearly stuffed after the long run hence the reason he went straight after the kick but it wasn't like the kick was going to decide the game, I do remeber Lawrence kicking at some point i think but how long has it been since he has done it.

Wonder if the Eels would like to send Inu our way I don't think I have ever seen a kciker hit the ball more sweetly than he does it just explodes off his foot doesn't even quiver in the air I don't know what his career percentage is but he strikes it well.

I am thinking if we had another option in the club they would have been given a chance my guess is Benji is the best of what we have and we just have to hope his accurracy improves.
