Wests merging with Canberra?

It is great to see you avoiding all the salient points alien - such as - will this make you more or less competitive on the field???????

Will it potentially damage the Wests Tigers club, brand and culture??

No - you prefer to talk about teaching the JV a lesson and making a ridiculous stand!! Against what????

Why should the JV support the recalcitrant partner who is actively fighting against its interests??!!

It is just the same ol' - same ol' from Cambo - and in a year of on-field success - it makes me sick to my stomach!!!

Dragons, Raiders back in Cup talks

A joint Dragons-Raiders NSW Cup team is back on the agenda, with the rival NRL clubs to meet next week about a proposal to play under the Shellharbour banner.
St George Illawarra, Canberra and NSWRL representatives on Tuesday will discuss sharing the costs of fielding a team in the NRL's second-tier competition.

Attempts were made to contact St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust about the talks as well as their preseason scheduling issues, with the club due to play in both the World Club Challenge (WCC) in England and the Charity Shield.

However, the Mercury was informed via a club spokesman that there was "nothing to report".

Canberra - who have Queensland Cup team Souths Logan as their feeder club - are hesitant about teaming up with the Dragons in the NSW Cup.

But Shellharbour are determined to receive better financial terms if they are to agree to a return to the NSW Cup next year and it is the only viable option for the Dragons.

The concept has been revived after a Raiders-Dragons deal with Carlton League premiers Wests collapsed.

The delicate discussions are among a number of issues threatening to unsettle St George Illawarra's premiership defence, still 17 days before the first group of players return for preseason training.

The Dragons had lobbied to move the WCC game against Wigan to Sydney to accommodate their other commitments, including the Charity Shield against South Sydney.

But the clash is set to be played in England at Wigan's DW Stadium on Sunday, February 27, the day after the NRL premiers are due to take on the Rabbitohs.

St George Illawarra are now desperate to move the date of the Charity Shield rather than cancel the game or allow another NRL club to play the Rabbitohs in their place.

With their first four NRL games away from home next year, because of redevelopment at both their Kogarah and WIN Stadium grounds, it could mean the Dragons will play in Wollongong, Sydney, Perth, England, the Gold Coast and Auckland before April.

The Mercury Challenge, which was to be played in Wollongong in February despite the western grandstand upgrade, is expected to be cancelled and the Perth clash offered to other NRL clubs.

The Steelers Club, which last year provided about $600,000 in funding to rugby league in the Illawarra, had been sounded out as a potential replacement for Shelharbour, but is in no position to provide backing for a NSW Cup outfit.

i already said nrl squad players would make them more competitive.

I clearly argued that just taking top-grade rejects from the Raiders and allowing that to compromise your merit-based team selections would actually make you much weaker - please provide a considered reply!!!

As for the article - please let the Dragons be prostitutes (again) brother!

It doesn't befit the proud Western Suburbs Magpies club who I have grown to respect enormously as brothers-in-arms over the past ten years!!!

You don't just get your way via tantrums - threats and ransom attempts!!!

This is the real adult world - not Macarthur Square!!

lol riiight so they should just bow down to a few people at camp concord like balmain are doing instead of sticking up for themselves

So now both OWNERS of the club are being destroyed by the "few" unnamed - faceless forces whose interests are what????

You refer to Wests Tigers as if it were a physical entity separate to Wests and Balmain!! It is Wests and Balmain - and just because a few old fossil committee men from the boondocks feel neglected - there is no anti-Wests activity - or anti-Balmain activity on the club's governing Board!!!

Go back to your sci-fi bollocks because the only conspiracy theories are eminating from Leumeah - not Balmain or Ashfield - because both those places understand priorities and fiscal realities!!!

I heard it was Wests Campbelltown who actually wants there to be a Wests Tigers NSW Cup team and it was Wests Ashfield that wants a Wests Magpies side in the NSW Cup.

How many NSW Cup games do you even attend alien - or is this all about some misconceived principle??????

I go to most Wests Magpies games and even alot of Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers games.

It was Campbelltown who have spoken with the Raiders! The split is not at WT Board level - but beneath that!

Good to see you support the NSW Cup - and I must say I support the continuing existence of both clubs at that level - and while I support Balmain - I am still undecided on the merits of one being the first-grade feeder team and the other missing out!

I do believe it should be done equitably - but joining with the Raiders is simply not on in my view!

I would rather it be left how it is now. It's working. We don't need 1 strong feeder team instead of 2 strong feeder teams for us to "move forward".

Balmain are not bowing down to anyone alien, and it's not about them sticking up for themselves. It's about remaining competitive and moving forward in a positive direction that benefits the club. Your issue is with Wests - Take it up with them instead of crying on here about it.

redemption - Calm down dude, you won this debate on a TKO.

Are they both strong??

Is it really working Sharing the talent and weakening both teams…

You guys will confirm but I believe last years grand finalist was the Tigers (Beaten by Bankstown). There were no names I recall from that squad and Bankstown was full of former and fringe dogs players.

How did BRET and Magpies fair this year???

Both teams lost their preliminary finals. A win would have seen a BRET v Magpies grand final! :frowning:

last time i looked the first grade players were distributed equally to both feeder clubs in the last couple of years with a mixture of local juniors from Balmain and Wests

That may (or may not) change in the near future.
