So basically 2/3 of the season is gone now , things are looking scary

Madges 1st season of course and he doesn't have his own roster

So what do you class as an unacceptable season

For me it's Top 12 , we miss that and EVERY one must come under serious scrutiny , even Madge

Am I being too harsh or am I right .....every season missing the Top 8 and someone needs to pay

Morning Mr Negative Nellie..

To answer your question yes it's another EPIC fail for the Mighty Wests Tigers BUT IMO true success is for the team that Wins the Premiership..all the others FAILED as well just at varying degrees..people bang on about accepting mediocrity but unless you are the team that wins the whole shabang ..just making the finals and doing nothing is the same thing..

but I guess it's the World we live in today..everyone gets a ribbon..

Have a nice day..

Lol
That’s just a cheap cop out !
Need to make the 8 to have a shot at the whole shebang ...

Who came 5th last year..how'd they go..?

Panthers came 5th
At least they gave themselves a chance !

If you want a black and white answer it's missing the 8. But it's a bit more nuanced than that. I think Ink mentioned the other day that there's not much to be celebrated in scraping into the 8 only to get embarrassed and bounced in the first week of finals, you're merely prolonging the inevitable. For mine making the 8 and then getting trounced 40-10 in the first week of the finals would also be unacceptable.

I think Madge would kill to have the rosters available that past coaches have had at their disposal. He would be able to do so much more with the likes of Tedesco, Woods, Moses and JAC at his disposal. The former three are not here not through lack of trying. JAC was a balls up by the club that should never have been allowed to happen in that he should have been locked down before Melbourne even had a chance to speak to him.

This season needs to be looked at in context. We have a very capable coach who assembled a good squad at Souths, won them the premiership and kept them competitive over the majority of his tenure. He's inherited a squad with well paid second graders, non-performers and habitually injured players. Granted that the season is not over yet, but we can all agree that we're largely not confident that the team can do enough to secure 28 points to finish the year with our run home. We have a well credentialed coach who has a poor roster at his disposal.

The club being nailed with the cap penalty didn't help, we're in a $330K hole for the next two years. Money that could be offered to a couple of promising young players or one very good player stuck behind a good roster (ala Matto.)

Unless players like Packer, Reynolds and Mbye can be offloaded with us paying only a sensible amount for the privilege of them playing elsewhere our roster is canned until the end of 2021. We'll have a few players coming off contract in 2020 that will give us some relief like McQueen, Taylor and Matulino but the big coin is tied up longer than that.

In terms of the club as a whole, this year has been a failure. Various people are at fault for that, some are still here, others have paid the price. The one person I feel who is largely exempt from blame is Madge as he is trying to make a turd sandwich taste like a Sunday roast. Madge is the one with the hardest job, he'll need to make some tough decisions in conjunction with Hartigan and Pascoe in the next few months on how to start offloading players and offsetting that cap hit we will likely encounter. IMO our development signings (both current and future identified talent,) are going to be extremely crucial to making this happen.

'This season's been a success considering we have over $2.5m of our cap playing reserve grade or injured, plus the improvements seen in Aloiai, Thompson, Eisenhuth, Chee-Kam and others. If we can move on Reynolds, Packer, McQueen and Matulino without paying too much freight and that money is spent correctly I have no doubt Madge will take us to the promised land within 3 years.

Yes Nathan’s Mum made them all ribbons !
You happy now ..?
Plus they would’ve made extra money with at least more merchandise sales by making the semis !
But you keep on pandering on with mediocrity!

@GNR4LIFE
Agree, I thought we would be bottom 2 or 3, so at this stage they have exceeded my expectations.

As for unacceptable, for me, both games against Parra, they showed lack of commitment, also the issues with our 'big' name players, Packer, Reynolds et al is very disappointing. Need some younger guys who are willing to put in on the line.

It's great to see the nostalgia of Benji and Robbie getting 300 games, but nostalgia does not win you games. Happy for Benji to stay an extra year, but Robbie should hang the boots up and imo, so should Chris Lawrence, not the same player anymore, get out whilst he still ok.

i'd say we went past unacceptable 2-3 seasons ago

with the squad we have and we probably will have for the next couple of years, we can only hope for a bradbury moment

Edit:
In addition, the question at some point will become "When or what makes the Wests Tigers a failure"

I'm happy with the direction we're heading.

It looks like the manager of football was sacked with some of the poor recruitment decisions (and the other bloke left). I believe that they should have been the two accountable for our current issues, which is essentially the roster.

Everything else about our direction is going well. I really hope the COE keeps on track and we consolidate most games to ANZ once it's complete.

Our culture has shifted in the right direction and we've built back some of our heart by bringing Robbie and Benji back. I don't think people realise the impact that will have for attracting players to the club.

The emotion that the guys showed for the jersey should go a long way to rebuild a brand that took a hit from the "big-4"

I'm also happy with Warren coming back. Our juniors seem to be really lacking at the moment, where they haven't in the past. Hopefully he can get it back to where it was.

So, for this year, a position on the table isn't my measure of success. I honestly just want to see building, stability and reliability or a year or two more. We haven't managed to achieve that for a long time.

Each season, the goal is to play finals footy, anything else than that is unacceptable.
As soon as wests tigers cannot play in the finals, the season is unacceptable, and its looking this way now.

If the WT’s get 30 000 emails every week from fans telling them they failed us again this week it might make a difference

I think you're delusional if you reckon that will happen or help.

In the long run, the only choice a fan has is to spend their time and money or not. If it makes you feel better to make them "accountable" on the internets, good for you.

Well, they'd respond to it, but I don't see how it would help at all. History isn't full of teams that started magically playing better because fans stopped cheering for them. I think we'd just go broke and get moved somewhere.

Yeah I suppose so, it wasn't a well thought out comment on my part.

I think this season just needs a little perspective.

Take away the 350K salary cap fine
Take away Reynold's salary
Take away Packer's salary
And you could probably throw in Matulino and McQueen's salary while we're at it.

The bulk of this season has been played significantly under the salary cap. I doubt too many other sides would have fared this well with the situation our cap is in. It's a credit to Madge that he's made us as competitive as we have been, but we've certainly shown we are lacking quality and class across the park. I can't wait to see what he can do with a clear cap.

However, it feels like this is the exact same transition we went through from Taylor to Cleary 🤔.

Why take out Matulino's? He did a good job for us until injured and his absence has been very noticeable - it changes the whole balance of the forward pack.

Easily? Can you see the Titans winning 5 more games? I can't.
