You have described a slide defence and plenty of teams use it and it makes it more difficult for opposition teams to create an overlap because the defending players work together to move laterally across the field, sliding in unison. This is used to combat and attacking team that uses a lot of width in theri attack, The defenders move side to side, maintaining their spacing to cover the entire width of the field, making it difficult to break the line. It is used to cutting off the attaacking options and forcing them towards the sideline and also helps to deal with the 3 on 2 situation with the cover defenders and sideline used to deal with the overlap. The big disadvantge is that it gives the oppositon time and space = speed and momentum. You trade risk for ground.

We are primarily using an up and in defence similar to Penrith and Melbourne; it is a more aggressive, pressure-based strategy. In this system the aim is to shut down the attack by getting up in their face. Indoing so you don't give the play makers time to act or players like Ponga or Best the room to move. The down side, as you have seen in both trials, is that when you misread the play or fail to engage decisively (Lobb) here can be a large gap created for an attacking player to exploit. Fitness and cover is an essentail component.

We should have the ability to switch as required, but the game plan agaisnt Ponga and Best, with aweaker centre pairing shoudl be up and in to limit opportunities in attack.

I triust this clarifies how to best stop the fullback from swweong effectively.

To combat slide defence the ball carrier attacks the inside shoulder of the ‘Sliding defender’ forcing him to change angles. At the same time the attacker outside the ball carrier drifts away from the carrier creating space inside him. This opens the gate for a player coming from behind and inside the ball carrier to run into. Every defence pattern has weaknesses but it is how well they operate as a group that provides the solution. The greatest danger in slide defence is sliding early as indicated by the above.

100%, and a slide defence is easily defeated by X and Y plays on a specific defender in any sweep around the back. The Riff at full strength ahve been the best at pulling apart an opposition's defensive strategy over the last few years. Luai will bring that knowledge with him.

Up and in, slide or press defence all depend on communication and trust. It is only early but our linespeed and communication appear to be better. We still need to nail the trust side of the house; especially when we are up and in - we have been caught short on the inside and outside a few times already.

I wonder if we are doing a team List video this year. I noticed last year we didn't do them. Any idea why this was the case?

If Bula plays they HAVE to kick at him and let him contest the footy with Ponga

They did it once last year in the corresponding game, Bula scored, then they never did it again for some reason

Luai is surely smart enough to recognise to kick the footy at the tall blokes... been a while since we've had a halfback smart enough to target weaknesses.

Its been mentioned - just bully their 5/8. Maybe Bradman . Our forwards can find a weak spot ,choose their strongest ,just to pick on all game n their structure ,lol , feeble plan will crumble - simples

This game will not be easy. It'll be important not to panic if things don't go brilliantly straight away.

Early season games are always cagey. I'm really interested to see how much expansive footy actually ends up getting played. Hopefully with Luai steering the team around we are getting the balance right and not making too many mistakes, which is where most early season games are won or lost. It's been quite a few seasons since we won our first match.

Newcastle are solid and experienced. We have a more promising squad but they have experience and more time playing together. As always we could get our pants pulled down. This season is defined, I think, not by what happens when we win, but what happens when we lose.

42-10 bro we'll pants them at home 😝

like most games, this match is going to be won and lost in the forwards early.

if we allow Newcastle to get a roll on, Sharpe, Ponga, Best, Marzhew, Gagai and Schiller are going to cut us to pieces. we don't have the quality defensively to deal with them playing downhill.

on the flipside, if May, Pole and Twal can get on top of their opposites, then Luai, Bula and Galvin will create points at will.

I think our bench is mobile and willing and will bring plenty of punch on both sides of the ball, but our starters will need to lay the platform. do that and we'll go a long way towards winning this one.
