HBG, Independent Directors Sacked

Absolutely..all players in all junior catchment area rep teams from Matt’s up to first Grade should be Wests Tigers players in Wests Tigers team colours and kit.. so they grow up looking at the first grade and feeling that connection that they are on track to 1 day be a Wests Tigers NRL player..kids love that kind of tribal belonging and it would be for the Brand and the Club in general…
But we’ve pretty much all agreed on this many times before, but it seems Richo suggested it to the board and it seems like it created a cataclysmic event.
That shows what they actually think of the merger.
Mate, I was a rabid Balmain fan all my life( up until the merger). I admit it was a bit awkward in the first couple of years but now it’s just the way it is and the WT are my team.
And I’m an old fart who’s not renowned for changing views !! 🤣

Here's a look back at the dysfunction of the HBG board & amongst the debenture holders over the past 2 years from media articles with a few excerpts I've pulled out.

Oct 26 2023 - https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/we...y-not-always-be-the-case-20231025-p5eey6.html

The Wests Ashfield-commissioned report, prepared by former NRL chief financial officer Tony Crawford and businessman Gary Barnier, is near completion, with Crawford saying: “We took the board of Wests Ashfield through the process, explaining our thinking, and will then move to other key stakeholders, such as Balmain and Wests Magpies. The final report should be completed inside a month.”

It is likely the report will recommend the addition of independent directors to the present seven-person board, which Wests Ashfield currently dominates via an entity known as the Holman-Barnes
Group.

One director, speaking anonymously because discussions had been confidential, said Wests Ashfield would never “sell off the farm” but could choose to carve out essential reserve powers, take a back seat and allow directors with specialist skills to make football decisions.

Aug 29 - 2024 - https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/we...from-wests-tigers-merger-20240829-p5k6gp.html

Balmain director and former Tigers first grade player Garry Leo told this masthead on Thursday he and his fellow board members had “lost faith” in HBG and was calling on fellow directors to endorse the end of the troubled joint venture 25 years after it was established.

Balmain have already held private conversations about approaching 91-year-old billionaire property developer Harry Triguboff, a diehard Tigers fan, to gauge his interest in potentially backing a Balmain licence given their limited financial resources. The other name being discussed is billionaire automotive businessman, Neville Crichton, also a Balmain fan.

Balmain directors feel they were blindsided by the external review at the end of last year, and believe many of HBG’s decisions have had a negative impact on the NRL club.

“One day we’re being told Barry O’Farrell would be reappointed as one of the independent directors, now they’re saying he’s not,” Leo said.

“They want people they can control. Unfortunately, it’s why they have been going so bad all these years, and that’s because the Wests directors have had too much influence on what is happening at the club. I felt sorry for Justin Pascoe. He was basically being told what to do by Wests.”

Rick Wayde, Tony Andreacchio and David Gilbert have been banned from any premises under the control of the Holman Barnes Group - the majority owner of the Tigers - pending an investigation into their conduct.

The trio plan to defend themselves against the allegations, which Wayde described as trivial.

It is understood that among the allegations - some of which are more than a year old - are claims that:

* Andreacchio referred to the wife of a fellow director as “darl”, which it is understood he vehemently denies;

* Gilbert and Wayde put pressure on a fellow director to back Andreacchio, which again they deny; and

* Wayde informed a fellow director he was in the wrong corporate box and failed to sit with his fellow directors at a number of events.

As for the allegations of putting pressure on fellow director Vince Tropiano, Wayde said: “We asked him the question of whether he was still voting for Tony as chair, which seemed like a reasonable question.

“Then he has accused us of taking him into a back room and pressuring him.'

“I am accused at one of the games in Campbelltown of telling (a director) they were in the wrong box when they started (eating) the food that was available there.

“I knew that because I was in the wrong box … but I had been invited to say hello to some of the Wests Tigers people by Danny Stapleton.”

Wayde was flabbergasted at claims he had failed to sit with fellow directors.

“There are seven events - I am not sure what the list is for the other two guys - where we are accused of not sitting with the guys and wives at various events,” Wayde said.

“Out of my list of events, there were two (events) I was running … where I didn’t sit with anybody. There is another one I didn’t even attend.

“So I don’t know how I couldn’t sit with them if I wasn’t there.”

former HBG chairman Tony Andreacchio has sent a text to several club members saying a HGB power struggle will end up with a board of directors that could push for the removal of the Tigers brand.

Andreacchio’s latest text shows he fears for the club’s direction if members of the HGB hold sway on the NRL club’s board.

“If the plan devised by these … individuals unfolds as expected later this week, our removal as directors will be finalised and our club membership will be banned indefinitely,” Andreacchio sent, according to the SMH.

“Consequently, the HBG will fall under the control of a cabal of four, supported by an outdated debenture holder system (currently comprising only 18 individuals). Their misguided ambition is to see the Western Suburbs Magpies replace the Wests Tigers in the NRL competition.”

The three Holman Barnes Group (HBG) directors who were the driving force behind the independent review that forced significant change at the Wests Tigers have been banned by the club’s majority owner for almost 15 years combined.

Tony Andreacchio, Rick Wayde and David Gilbert were all hit with significant bans on New Year’s Eve for a range of alleged misdemeanours dating back several years.

Andreacchio, Wayde and Gilbert were the chief instigators of the review, which was conducted by businessman Gary Barnier and former NRL chief financial officer Tony Crawford.

Their banishment throws into doubt whether the recommendations of the Barnier-Crawford report will be implemented in their entirety.

“The tragedy is the club is in great shape through the work of the CEO and the executive team. The remaining directors are only worried about self-interest and winding back the review which is a problem for the Wests Tigers,” Wayde said.

“In the short term, Shane Richardson and Barry O’Farrell are doing remarkable despite the interruptions. If the Gang of Four get away with this movement, they’ll be intruding even more. That’s the major concern for the Tigers."

Allegations against Andreacchio, who has also been asked to undertake an anger management course, include:

That he yelled at a fellow HBG director, calling him a “f---ing suck” approximately 10 times in front of other board members in an aggressive manner. Andreacchio repeated the comments later on despite being told words to the effect, “You can’t do this”, “Enough’s enough, we’re one team. Calm down”;
That he allegedly became red in the face and made abusive comments to a fellow director in a threatening tone;
That while waiting for a taxi after a function for the West Tigers launch of the 2024 NRL season he approached a fellow director and stood close to him and made a comment to the effect: “You f----- softie”;
That at an HBG board meeting last September he engaged in aggressive behaviour towards a fellow director, calling him a “parrot” in a raised voice.

The allegation against Gilbert was in relation to comments and actions made to a fellow director concerning his allegiances on the board.

The banned trio fell out of favour after current HBG chair Julie Romero led a coup in March which overthrew Andreacchio at the helm of the HBG board. Documents recently obtained by this masthead show that Romero had previously expressed “grave concerns” about the review.

The documents and emails also showed that Romero threatened legal action against Tigers chairman O’Farrell should he hold a Tigers board meeting without her blessing.

Liquor and Gaming NSW has opened an investigation into the running of the Holman Barnes Group, conducting interviews with the three directors who have been banned for a combined 15 years.

The news of Wayde, Andreacchio and Gilbert’s exile prompted Inner West Council mayor Darcy Byrne to call on the NSW government to intervene in the boardroom stoush at the HBG.

“That’s what the fans want, and that is what’s needed for Wests Tigers to survive and thrive,” Byrne said.

“We’ve finally got things moving in the right direction on the football field. Tigers fans can’t afford for backroom brawling to undermine our team’s long-awaited recovery in 2025.”

IMHO I would have thought a better venue for a protest would be outside PVLs office at Fox Studios, not pretty little Pratten Park.
It seems that the NRL can help but listening to a whole lot of dedicated but toothless supporters cannot.
Location is irrelevant if we make this big enough then the media will be all over it.

Its going to start at Pratten, I assume guest speakers will say their bit...therell be lots of media there....then we move on to Wests Ashfield

Id love to see 1000 WTs fans in WTs gear enter the club as a guest, and then drink iced water, not spend a cent lol

That’s the best he’s got on Richo; being hesitant to sign a guy who hadn’t played in over a year and was coming off domestic abuse accusations.

Vicious is really struggling right now lol
well not quite - there is a little bit more - inflated payments to his and his sons business, employment of other family members

Yeah, notreally mate, if they had a contract and deferred payment in any way in order to free up immediate cashflow in order for the club to meet immediate financial obligations then by definition they loaned the club money…even though it may have been just an accounting adjustment it was something they agreed to to help the club at a time it required help…. Coincidentally Farahs 9 predecessor also made an arrangement with his former club but back door managed to arrange terms that benefited him geatly when he secured the collateral agreed to as security for the loan in case of default…. 🧐😉

Salary cap relief, not loans to the club. Very different things

One of the longest serving debenture holders at the Holman Barnes Group – the owners of the Wests Tigers – has sensationally called for the ownership structure to be changed immediately in the wake of three board members being banned.

John Hardgrove – who has been a debenture holder for more than three decades – said it is time for a major revamp of the Holman Barnes Group governance structure.

“The debenture system has served its purpose,” Hardgrove said. “I supported the system up until now because it served its original purpose of protecting the assets of the club and the support of rugby league.

“What’s happening now is outside the original intent of the group. We need to look at another system that will protect the interests of the club, its assets and the long history of a foundation rugby league club as well as the Wests Tigers.

“The debenture system is no longer fit for purpose. A new system needs to be developed and this could require an administrator to be appointed while this is being done.

“What has been done to these three people is grossly unfair and lacks procedural fairness.”

They include; Hardgrove, Gilbert and current Holman Barnes board of directors Julie Romero, Dennis Burgess, Stephen Montgomery and Vince Tropiano.

Other debenture holders include Kevin Hammond, Daniel Lane, Clare Burgess, Fiona Shand, Russell Smith, Brian Cook, Mick Liubinskas, Scott Beynon and Peter DiMichiel (chairman).

Paul Marsh – who acted for Gilbert, Wayde and Andreacchio in their dealings against Holman Barnes – is also a debenture holder.

“The penalties are a joke,” Hardgrove said. “I’ve seen what they were charged with and the penalty they were given. The penalty does not fit the alleged crime even if you believe they deserved some sort of penalty.

“What they have been given is a joke and seems to be ploy for other people to gain even more control.”

“All I’ll say is that in our Barrister’s summary (he says) that we have been ‘stitched up’,” Gilbert, the former Cricket NSW boss said. “That says it all.”

The guilty trio were represented by lawyer Paul Marsh through a range of hearings including the week of December 9.

Marsh defended his client’s in-front of the disciplinary committee which consisted of Romero, Stephen Montgomery and Dennis Burgess. Romero, Montgomery and Burgess are fellow Holman Barnes Directors.

It's interesting how the two mayor's Cambo/ Inner West are both Darcy's - both looked very happy when the stadium announcement was made at Leichardt.
Shame our board are not so enthusiastic for whatever reason that maybe.
This one had me thinking why actually. Why were they so angry at being locked into Leichhardt for the next 15 years. Overlapping the next license agreement.....

Its as easy to read as black and white.

Feb 14 2025 - https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/n...l/news-story/db9617946c86fbdb61d38e11e276083e

An alleged inappropriate touching scandal was a major factor in the breakdown of the Wests Tigers ownership, after a board member was told to “undergo training” over an incident with a young woman.

The split opinions led to a coup at the HBG’s annual general meeting last March, with current chair Julie Romero ousting her predecessor Tony Andreacchio and his deputy Rick Wayde, who were both influential in backing the Wests Tigers’ football review.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that same day, Saturday, March 23, an incident occurred in which HBG board member Vince Tropiano was accused of using a voting paddle to “tap” a woman, before saying to her: “You’ve been a good girl”.

Private emails obtained by this masthead in which a complaint about the incident was initially made claimed the woman had been tapped on the “backside”.

However legal documents referencing the incident, later sent by HBG, stated the woman had been tapped on the “side”, while confirming the “you’ve been a good girl?” comment had been made.

It is understood Mr Tropiano was required to undergo training by a disciplinary committee and removed from a committee he was on, as a result.

That handling of the incident by Ms Romero was criticised at board meetings by other HBG directors.

David Gilbert, the HBG board member who initially made a complaint about the incident with HBG CEO Simon Cook, was sensationally stood-down as a board member in December.

In his email to Mr Cook titled “incident prior to the AGM”, Mr Gilbert outlined how he was talking to a senior HBG executive when that person told him he had just witnessed Mr Tropiano “tap” the woman on the “backside”.

According to the email, the senior executive then immediately approached the woman to check on her wellbeing, asking her “are you ok?” before telling her “that’s not acceptable what just happened to you”.

The minutes of a board meeting from early April, less than a few weeks after the AGM, detail how Mr Wayde and Mr Andreacchio voiced their concerns over the handling of the incident by Mr Romero.

Mr Wayde and Mr Andreacchio, who were aligned with Mr Gilbert in the board split, both raised concerns about how Mr Tropiano was being “protected” by his allies on the board after they referred him to the disciplinary committee.

The minutes of a board meeting on May 28 outline how Ms Romero openly discussed “that there have been some enquiries regarding the complaint (against Mr Tropiano) which was dealt with recently”.

Mr Andreacchio was overthrown at the AGM last March, thanks to Ms Romero having the backing of fellow board members Mr Tropiano, Dennis Burgess and Stephen Montgomery — giving her a majority on the seven-person board.

Montgomery and Burgess are part of the Wests Tigers board.

Apr 30 2025 - https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/mo...-deposed-by-magpies-boss-20250430-p5lvgj.html

Julie Romero, the woman who led a boardroom revolt that split the Holman Barnes Group – the majority owners of the Wests Tigers – was on Tuesday night deposed as chair of the organisation.

Romero was voted out and replaced by Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club chairman Dennis Burgess. Romero will remain on the board.

The ascension of Burgess to the chairman’s position at the HBG – which oversees the cashed-up Wests Ashfield leagues club – will raise eyebrows at the Wests Tigers, a joint-venture club formed through the merging of Balmain and the Western Suburbs.

Burgess allegedly told Wests Tigers director and Balmain chairman Danny Stapleton at a game last year, “We’re bringing back the Wests Magpies”.

That conversation led to Wests Tigers chairman Barry O’Farrell raising concerns with ARL Commission chairman boss Peter V’landys.

Romero led a coup in March last year that overthrew Tony Andreacchio from the helm of the HBG board, and also took action against fellow directors Rick Wayde and Dave Gilbert that led to their departures from the board over the summer.

Oct 8 2025 - https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/s...h/news-story/e85bbbc12275c4157590d797a70965ed

The owners of the Wests Tigers are embroiled in a fresh controversy with former Holman Barnes Group chair Julie Romero becoming the latest board member to be handed a long-term suspension.

Romero – spent 13 months as chair of the Holman Barnes Group before she was deposed as chair in April.

However, her time on the board of the Holman Barnes Group came to an end last month. Romero has been banned for eight years.

“Following a comprehensive and independent investigation, we can confirm Julie Romero was officially excluded from membership of the Holman Barnes Group on September 30 following a serious breach of confidentiality,” a Holman Barnes statement read. “We are grateful for Julie’s contribution to Holman Barnes Group and wish her well.

“In the interest of all parties, we will not be making any further comment.”

Romero was chair of Holman Barnes when they suspended three directors earlier this year. Those directors Rick Wayde, Tony Andreacchio and David Gilbert were sensationally banned on New Year’s Eve.

Wayde has led legal action against his dismissal with the court case ongoing. It is due to be heard again in December.

Wayde was banned for eight years and Andreacchio (six).

Gilbert received a six-month suspension. His ban expired in April but said he had no interest in re-applying for his membership.

Gilbert was told he must front the board and show significant remorse for his actions in order to re-apply. The former Australian cricketer said there was no chance of that occurring.

“I’ve shown no interest in re-joining the club whilst the current regime is in charge,” Gilbert said. “It was a shame when it happened and it’s a shame 12 months later. Hopefully sanity will prevail and we will get some proper governance going at the joint.

“What happened to me was nothing short of scandalous. I was basically ousted because of my friendship and connections to Tony and Rick. What happened to the two of them was disgraceful. “What I have heard has happened to Julie vindicates the madness in that place.

“It would have to be a complete change in the running of the club to ever reconsider.

“I find it very sad. It shouldn’t be like this. It’s all about power I just think some very good people in Rick and Tony have been victimised .

“It’s a great club but at the moment it’s held up for ridicule.”

It is unclear Romero will follow Wayde and Andreacchio in pursuing legal options.
