Article in the Australian - WT Salary Cap Problems

To me it was all about spin and waffle to deflect criticism and buy time.I have no doubt sections of it are based on facts but i find it impossible to believe everything that was said

Why would Marina GO choose The Australian Newspaper to air our dirty washing? A publication not known to be read by Tiger FANS. Perhaps, for ALL us FANS, Marina GO could appear on NRL 360 and answer MANY QUESTIONS??? Afterall she and half the Board were elected by the NRL and whilst they are there, they are puppets to the NRL. I struggle to see any light in the horizon whilst NRL elected officals run OUR Club.

Welcome Ryde Oval. Lost a bit of skin on the pitch in the middle there when playing.

How easy is it for current management to sit back and blame everything on previous administration?

While I have no doubt they've left us in a mess, putting their hands up and saying everything is to blame on previous admin is too convenient.

I disagree. The way the previous board operated was almost criminal. To say they were inept is being kind.

Agree willow ….. Fully support Marina and her board.
This is the clean up we had to have ... on the pathway to being a professionally run business.

Can someone detail the 'criminal' way which the former board operated?

I personally think its quite disrespectful and defamatory to say this - there were a number of former WT board members from both sides of the joint venture who brought great skills and a genuine passion and emotional connection to the club. They weren't simply yes men & women for the NRL, they cared about how the club went on and off the field, and they did it for nothing in addition to their own careers elsewhere.

I found Marina's comments about the former board members completely unacceptable and disrespectful. Whether these are views held by the board at the moment or not, they are opinions that should not be aired in public - shows a complete lack of respect for those who have been in her position before.

I used the word "almost", so don't try and spin it. It must be foggy in your part of the world because it's clear as day that the club has been mismanaged for a number of years, and the reason we find the team sitting in last place, letting players go and not being able to sign anyone is largely thanks to the old board.

The previous board were a bunch of oxygen thieves who were too busy furthering their own agendas, not to mention regular leaks to certain journalists about goings on at the club. Notice how there has been a dramatic reduction in media leaks coming out of the club this year? Quite frankly it has taken too long for the Wests Tigers board to be overhauled and we're only just seeing the long term damage the previous board created.

Full credit to Marina Go for stating the truth, as opposed to opinion. I don't envy her job, she has a hell of a mess to help clean up but someone with a bit of professionalism has to do it.

I can and will accept what is happening at the club had to happen what I can not accept is the team in the position It finds itself. The coaching issues are my problem Taylor is a joke and the performances of the team reflect this…the rest will take care of it self .I never thought the finals were on the cards but the performances are terrible ...I also believe management are under pressure hence a statement ...Taylor is the immediate problem and many in the right places know it!

To be precise…"_almost_ criminal" was the term used.

Friends, family???

That or a hatred of Marina Go for some other reason hes not telling us.

There are some people on here suggesting the new board is actually responsible and this is an exercise in finger-pointing.

Considering we have signed bugger all players in the last 12 months, how could they be culpable? Unless there is an implication that we actually DO have heaps of money and are refusing to spend it, the blame is easy to apportion.

Whether it's a good idea to discuss in a paper is another matter.

Just because there's a salary cap it doesn't mean the club has to spend to it or I think more specific to our case, has the money to spend to it.

Remember, Humphries signed at least one player with the only provision to be able to pay them being a financial bonus we would get from hypothetically making the top 8 (which we didn't end up doing). There are some shockingly run clubs in the NRL. We happened to be one of them.

It doesn't add up. Its all smoke and mirrors. I have no faith whatsoever, in the new board and management. We are nowhere near the salary cap. We need Rugby League People in there fast to take over management of this club. We are being run to the ground by AMATEURS.

My view on the previous board ….the one where Mike Bailey and Dave Trodden were the alternate chairs were well intentioned but were constrained by their constituents ... ie they weren't always acting entirely in the interests of Wests Tigers. The Wests side of the board acted in the Wests interests and the Balmain acted in what benefited the Tigers most. We needed a board that divorced themselves from the foundation clubs. It has virtually taken for Wests Tigers to go broke for it to happen. If the League hadn't of come in with, dare I say, " a bail out" or a loan of sorts, then we couldn't have continued. But through the leagues intervention we have replaced the board with people who have business skills. Not well intentioned former players but people with skills to be able to manage a multi million dollar business. The incumbent board through their chair (Marina Go) have to put the deck chairs back in order before the ship can sail forward. That may take some time which is the point she was making in the media. The board now have to appoint a new CEO to carry forward the business plan which will take us forward. I await with great anticipation to see who the board appoints. I hope it is someone with the right mix of skills and experience with the people skills to communicate with the members who are the soul of the club.
So yes Benji ... I know where you are coming from about the previous board .... But they really weren't the right people, or the right mix of people, to take us forward .... Albeit they did their best.

It's a good point you raise Knuckles, the next CEO is going to have a difficult job ahead, so I certainly hope they appoint somebody with the right skillset and mindset to help take the club forward.

Yes I did. I don't believe we are anywhere near the salary cap. It sounds like someone out of their depth looking for excuses. I just don't accept this and this article coming out after our year is a write off speaks volumes. They tried to pull the wool over peoples eyes and its coming homer roost.

Fair enough, you believe what you want however it's been talked about on here for years that previous administration had a very poor habit of backending contracts and we're still paying for that now.

Well, people have been screaming for more transparency and now that we have it, some don't want to accept it. Facts are facts and if some of us don't like them I can understand that they won't put their membership money on the line for this period and that's a decision we all make each year. For many members, a winning team is the main priority; others have different reasons for being a member and know that we won't be competitive for some time.

For myself, I'll stick solid, as I have done for about 55 years now and I've seen worse times (and better!). We are all in possession of the facts which can be publicly disclosed and I think the hysteria should stop now; just decide whether you want to give the club this three years…..or not.

I've so enjoyed them.pissing up my several hundred bucks each year against a wall…can't wait to donate again

I won't be renewing next year , I'd rather make a donation to a worth while cause .

If $800k from ANZ isn't worthwhile neither is the crumbs i contribute.

I read the article and was impressed with the honesty that chair Go had..we have been a mess and rabble for far to long…it doesn't matter about the cap,the backend deals, the boys club etc etc...we are now heading on the right path of professionalism and a well run business ...all this takes time, but it will happen...call me a supporter of the new board or what ever you like, some people should take the blinkers off and look at the real world, they are trying their best, the old board may have had good intentions, however their business acumen left a bit to be desired,WESTS board members and Balmain board members may have had their own agendas,THIS has now stopped as has the LEAKS..this tells me the front office has been sorted to an extent..Why not at least give this new board the benefit of trying to cleanup a pretty fair mess, other than criticism after critisicism, even though many dislike JT,he appears to have the backing of the board, they obviously know a lot more than us..all in all ,let's give him his three year tenure,if things don't improve, then we can blame the board, management and JT,we can even blame the ball boys and hotdog man..!!!!!

Normally numbers don't lie but in WT case anything is possible.Very disappointing we are all addicts but what about the new generation supporter?.This problem is just going to compound over the years. We must go to the NRL to find a more immediate solution.

I'm running out of excuses to tell my WT crazy kids. They just want a winning team , they are not interested in the polotics!

I will probably go round again come next Feb…..I always do...despite numerous times thinking that's it.memberships done with...When the anger subsides and the itch for footy is high.
but the feeling of deception and being ripped off is pretty real right now

Marina may want to update our "strategic plan" in line with her comments today: http://www.weststigers.com.au/conten…an_FINALv2.pdf

It states the Performance Measure in 2017 is to make the NRL TOP FOUR.

2017 is only two years away, yet today she says it will take three years to fix the mess.

You have to laugh.

It was one of the questions I put forward as part of the Q&A which was along the lines of "given how we have gone this year are you looking to revise the strategic plan"?

I hope she takes the chance to respond.
