"ill never play for another club again" - Benji 2013

Goes on to play for: Dragons, Broncos, Souths.

"One more year" - Benji & Robbie 2018

Goes on and creates infighting and media drama when he wanted another contract on top of the 2 years he already got after that.

"I am willing to play for a minimal contract" Benji 2020

Declines Cowboys, Sharks because of money

"this is my home" - Benji 2020

Declines an off field role to help bring the club into the future and decides to play reserve grade at another club at age 37.

I love Benji, he is a club legend and forever grateful for the highlights he brought us...but Benji in the final years of his career has been all ego talk, telling the fans and media what they want to hear and no walk and to me that has tarnished what could of been an outstanding Wests Tigers legacy.

All the best Benji, the club will move on without you :+1:

A great summary, all true, but doesn’t make for good reading, Wests Tigers will be a better all round side without Benji this year

Benji is a guy who clearly suffers from cognitive dissonance. Perhaps the worst I've seen in rugby league. He is never wrong, as he genuinely believes his actions are correct/justified. Takeaway his reputation and there is no logical reason to have him in your squad. Good luck to him. Seems he has learned nothing over the last 10 years.

I have a mate with exactly the same condition.
2 knee reconstructions and still believes his the best on the field.
Difference is it’s on the basketball court and whenever we play the whole team plays to his style and less like a team....
Enough said.

"He is a leader of men, he has been playing at the highest levels of the game over a long and distinguished career, he comes with the highest of recommendations from Wayne (Bennett), he will provide great support to the experienced halves pairing we have in Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker and his experience and knowledge that he can pass down to the young up-and-coming halves we have at the Club will be priceless."
Mark Ellison
Head of Football

I wouldn't want him to come near our young up-and-coming halves... there will be a lot of hail mary plays if they get coached by him... so goodluck wabbits

“I’ll never play for another club”
“One more year” - Benji 2018
“Tigers is my home”
They just get greedy as seasons go by

-Finally no more brain explosion grubber kicks that sail dead in the very last minute
-Hail mary floater passes towards row 5
-Kicking directly into opposition feet every time on 5th tackle
-Not a team player, tries to take it all on himself
Tigers vs Souffs @ Leichhardt will be a cracka ?

Agree with most of that, but the thing is he can really turn it on and win matches when he wants to as well. I would hate for that scenario to happen when he is playing against us. Odds on it will though and the media will have a field day about how we let yet another great player go!

Old man Wayne and Benji are very alike, both driven by ego and very much past their prime.
I can see how Souths are looking at the signing as cheap insurance but it is also blocking the pathway of some kid. One thing for sure his defence is not going to improve, but I guess he may have better minder so

I truly hope that it works out well enough that he sees some reasonable game time and if not it will be a sad way to end the career of such a former bright burning light.

All that will do is fuel the fire for journalists and arm chair fans to start spewing out even more "tiGeRs SHoUld oF kePT BeNji"

I am as happy as anyone else to see him gone from the playing squad at WT and not fussed about the media, nor lovesick pre 2013 fans.

I've spoken with a few real close mates who are Souths fans and also fans of Benji in his prime however none are excited by his signing. They all said Souths have a few quality young lads on the up who will likely have their pathway temporarily blocked for now.

It's a classic Wayne move to block pathways for young players. Payne Haas would've been playing 20 minutes a game in 2019 if he was the coach that year.

Benji's defence last season was very poor. That said, he wasn't helped by our middle collapsing so frequently, leaving him isolated, and making arm grabbing tackles at back rowers as they ran past him.

Playing behind a stronger pack will mean he has a few more mates to help him make his tackles.

Can't see him getting any game time unless there's multiple Injuries to their halves. They've already got some decent young fellas who can fill in if someone goes down

Reynolds hammy has been playing up throughout pre season training, not looking great for this season. And Walker's knee isn't flash.

They fear those two could be on the sidelines for a bit and the current backups just aren't ready for considerable playing time. Add the origin period on top of that and Benchie is the perfect ready made replacement.

Benji has always been hot and cold but the proportion of cold increases as time goes on. He's probably got 4-5 quality games in him tops for the year. Bennett used him well in Brisbane as a bench player and depth coverage. He simply is incapable of playing anything close to a full season which unfortunately we did.

If that’s the case Souths won’t play finals

Souths have pretty good side on paper. Just not sure about their pack. Thoughts?

agree the pack is souths problem the backs are solid I reckon they defied the odds last season really given the forwards
