Well Warnie's Aus legend's vs England legend's cricket match wont be going ahead. Apparently it is 'too hard' to organise the event. Yet after the Asian Tsunami they managed to organise an ODI with legends from around the world playing… Maybe because that pleased the powerful Asian bloc at the ICC?
SHANE Warne calls off a Queensland flood fundraiser after an 11th-hour bid to save the Twenty20 legends match failed.
>
Warne tweeted the news late this morning, telling disappointed fans: “Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately after discussions with everyone concerned re a flood game, it won't be happening”.
>
The cricketing event was hoped to raise as much as $20 million for victims of the floods, and was hoped to be held as a legends charity Twenty20 match at the MCG later this month.
>
The event was hoped to be a match between English and Australian greats, and followed the efforts of a raft of other sporting greats who pledged to help the Queensland flood cause.
>
The Aussie team was hoped to include greats including Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Darren Lehmann and Glenn McGrath.
>
Warne thanked former English fast bowler Darren Gough and Gilchrist for doing their bit to try to get the game to go ahead.
>
But Warne said he hoped to find alternative fundraising methods.
>
“To Adam and goughy who have helped me try to put game on I thank-you guys so much. Let's keep helping out in other ways and raise $$$$,” he tweeted.
>
Warne had gone to great lengths to get the project off the ground, including contacting Channel 9 boss David Gyngell and concert promoter Michael Gudinski to ensure maximum exposure for the proposed event.
>
Warne also called on Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland to back the event.
>
The event was hoped to be staged a day before the England-Australia one day international on January 30.
>
Last-minute attempts to keep the concept going as late as 8.30pm last night failed, when Warne said he was “still trying for a 20/20 match”.
>
But the spin king’s hopes faced a major hurdle after Cricket Australia knocked back the concept earlier this month.
>
Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young had said the concept would be “too hard” given the organisation already planned to use the seven one-day internationals between Australia and England to raise funds instead, culminating in a gala day for the fifth clash at the Gabba on January 30.
What a joke CA has become, so what if they have a gala day and plan to raise funds at the matches in the meantime. They can do that AND have the charity 20/20 match. The more money, the better.
