Did 9 wickets fall in the last session ….. The last 8/56 .... Geez I don't know ... Amazing !

I went to bed at 3.00 knowing that with 7 wickets in hand and just an over an hour of play left I thought the side would win comfortably, you can imagine my surprise upon hearing the 6.00 am news that we had lost, WTF!.

Well this was quite a collapse. A couple of unplayable balls for our best batsman (Clarke and Warner), others finding ways to get out playing on or hitting their pads (Khawaja and Smith), Watson LBW again!, and Haddin given out LBW with the ball barely touching the stumps.

Those runs Bresnan and Swann got were very valuable at the end of the innings.

Bird hasn't had the impact the selectors would have liked so I'll be surprised to see him play in front of Starc in the last test. Watson may not be fit enough to play so Hughes will find himself back in the team.

The Series has been very close bar that one flogging at Lords from memory. A 14 run loss and a draw where the Aussies were looking extremely good and now this match where once again we were looking good before a collapse on a tricky pitch. England are not that far away. I really do think despite what this Ashes series ends up, that Australia can win them back down here.

Yeah agree to a degree Peaches I think we lost the Test when we couldn't post 300+ in the first innings and collapsed so meekly

This is what Shane Watson's Wikipedia page temporarily read.

Shane Robert Watson (born 17 June 1981) is an Australian cricketer. He is a right-handed LBW candidate and a right-handed fast medium bowler. He announced his retirement due to injury after the 4th 2013 Ashes Test Match citing deep vein thrombosis, caused by being repeatedly hit in the same spot on his front leg.

For yrs we heard how the Aussies pride themselves on mental disintegration. Is the shoe on the other foot now? have the English and the English weather destroyed them mentally? i mention the weather cos after coming so close in Manchester, it would have been a task to get themselves up again, then they snatch defeat out of the claws of victory. Are they mentally weak?

Yeah we definately lost an opportunity in that first innings when we lost the morning session of day 3 pretty badly.

To follow on from my last post, i think what we're seeing atm is the Poms dishing out the same mental scars to young guys like Smith, Hughes, Khawaja that we gave to the Poms back in the 90's

The tables have really turned.

Our downfall is that we had a golden two decades with a plethora of talent that it seems like no one planned to blood youth in for the future, now we're back to the days when AB took a young side over and had to build it up. We have absolutely no answers and every batsman that comes into the team seems to lack confidence. We really need a Dravid-eqsue stone waller who can steady an innings for us. Everyone seems to reckon Clarke is the answer but I'm not so sure about that.

Oh what I would give for Stuey MacGill to have been born 15 years later…

I am a big smith fan, and feel he cemented his spot in the series. He played some good innings with the bat and outplayed some senior players and seemed I play spin very well. We need to play and stick.
However khawaja an Hughes are not very comfortable in the top grade and I don't think will ever play well because that number 3 was punters for so long and cricket aus think that chopping and changing and waiting for that player to hit 50s+ every game will come, it's just stupid.
They need to play either Hughes or khawaja in at 4 or 5 and push Watson to opener or 3 to place less pressure.

Watson shouldn't even be assured of a spot. almost 50 tests and only has 2 100's next to his name. He's the modern day Damien Martyn

Marto was my fave player !
As Shown above with those stats… There's no comparison.

Damien Martyn would be one of the first batsmen picked in our current Australian team.

It seems he's actually underrated but he was such a classy player. Elegant and graceful. He still finished with good stats, although even I admit, coulda been better and was looking at an average of 50 until a few bad innings.. Also probably should have scored closer to 20 centuries. He was part of our golden era and both he and Mark Waugh before him were brilliant number 4s..

Martyn was unfortunate he had a few bad innings at the wrong times

I would add blokes like Elliott, Stuart Law ,Darren Lehmann ,Tom Moody, Martin Love

All these blokes would be walk up starters in the current side

We have some massive headaches Our batsman face bowlers who are barely Sheffield Shield quality and they still can't get their averages out of the thirties

Something needs to change and change quickly

According to Anderson's autobiography there may be something beyond form to Marto's swift demise (and disappearance) on the international scene. He was a quality player though, I remember the 2004 test series in India where he dominated the series and was a big part of us winning over there. He'd walk into the team now, ahead of anyone in the top 6 except Clarke.

Brain isn't what it used to be but would have Clarke and Martyn played together ??

Be interesting to see who had the higher batting average if they did play together

Marto and Clarke did play together, Clarke debuted in India in 2004, Marto retired in 2006.

This may have played a role in Marto's demise.

That's an interesting read. I'm sure there are many untold stories like this.
