Well, the videos of Gildart's runaway tries in UK looked good but didn't show much about his defence capabilities. Now unfortunately we now all about his defence.

Anyone who watched the UK SL knew.

He has been really poor defensively forever.

The runaway tries, to be fair to him, came pre injury. He has lost his pace since...a multitude of injuries.

The problem is, his pace / swerve was basically 'all' he had going for him.

He just simply won't match it physically against other 90% of centres moving forward.

Tomkins and Hardaker both failed in the NRL and both were better much better credentialed. Reality is he is way too small...and he was well known...very well known...in the UK for being a really poor defender.

So, this is not exactly a shock.

I hate to single him out, but someone needs to sit down with him and say "listen, stay here mate and you'll be state cup for the next 18 months....go back and you'll have 3 or 4 UK clubs after you. Your decision".

His contract won't be hard to move...but he are going to almost have to be Ricky Stuart like and just make it clear he will be playing state cup in front of 500 people from here unless he walks.
but as a club we don't usually have the gumption to do or say that
We potentially could have sat Talau down and said go t9 Melbourne in a swap for JAC and we didn't so why would we do it now
Hope we do but can't see us telling him he won't be playing first grade for next 18 months

He played tests three years ago.

He has had a LOT of injuries since...think of a Josh Reynolds / Chris Lawrence type change. He has lost his pace and mobility. He broke down on game day, in the warm ups, for Wigan a couple of times last season.

If...massive IF...he gets his pace back, we may see something very decent.

He may well never be the player he was though...and without his speed, is very ordinary.
I saw him play before the injuries and he was really quick and elusive. He does look to have lost some.

Yep he was a turnstile in the UK and still is.
Tries in SL shouldn’t impress anyone, the Uk SL is where washed up NRL players go to make some $ before they totally quit, the standard is nothing like NRL and also far slower.

Had some good moments and some shocking ones..

In all honesty given the injuries Gildardt wouldn't be in the side.. Madge Showed his hand weeks ago.. Maumalo back it's back to NSW Cup for him..

Wonder how josh Reynolds is going?

madge is a fool for picking Gildart, Peachy a better option.
Yeah I’ve had the same thought but there’s gotta be more to Peachey not being in the team than we know about it. That’s all I can come up with as to why Gildart is being picked ahead of him.

Don't mind his work with ball in hand, but defensively needs a lot of work. Should stay in reserves until he's ready to be strong in defence consistently throughout games, and week-to-week.

Nothing kills your confidence more than not having trust in your defence. If this keeps happening, he could be completely destroyed as a player. Madge simply cannot play him in first grade next week.

He can be a good NRL player, but needs time and work. He looks like a bust for this year, but if he hangs around and works hard, he could be good this time next year. He's here for 2 years, so I expect the club has committed to him for that time.
