Hastings to leave Wigan

19 April 2021
Wigan Warriors can confirm that Jackson Hastings will leave the Club at the end of the 2021 season.

Hastings will join NRL side Wests Tigers for 2022 and 2023.

Wigan Warriors executive director, Kris Radlinski, said: “Jackson asked to see me on Sunday morning where he informed me that he has agreed a two-year deal in the NRL and will leave at the end of 2021 when his contract expires.

“There has been much speculation about an immediate exit, but I have had written assurances from his management team and through my relationship with Michael Maguire, 2021 was never an option.

“During my conversation, Jackson was incredibly humble and said he feels honoured to have represented the Club. I could see it in his eyes that he wants to leave Wigan a winner.

“We have never doubted his commitment as a Rugby League player. He brings an outstanding attitude to training every day and plays his heart out every week on the playing field.

“Wests Tigers are getting a player who is deeply motivated to succeed and will drive the rest of the playing squad.”

Hastings said: “I am extremely grateful to Ian Lenagan and Kris Radlinski and Adrian Lam to represent this great Club.

“Over the last 15 months I’ve really appreciated being part of such an historic place and the expectations that come along with that.

“Kris and I have spoken at length about what the future holds. Having such a great relationship with him, the door is open if an opportunity arises in the future.

“I’m really grateful to all the fans for putting up with the rumours and speculation. I have given everything I have to the jersey and I will continue to do that for the rest of this year. I am an extremely driven individual that’s super committed to bringing success to Wigan in 2021.

“Now this is out of the way, I just want to get on with playing Rugby League. I am solely focused on 2021 and the goal we have as a Club for this year.

“Once again, I would like to say thank you to the Wigan fans for the constant support and I can’t wait to see them all back in the stands.”

All of this suggests we are receiving a mature minded version of Jackson, one with a dedicated work ethic and will to succeed.

Sounds like the same spin we heard from James Roberts and BJ

Lets be honest Jackson never had the same off field issues as Roberts and didn't burn through 5 or 6 NRL Clubs and BJ has never shown glimpses of maturity on the field.

I’m more so comparing the fans believing the fluff articles that BJ and Roberts spun out during the off-season. Until he walks the talk I’m not buying that crap anymore

Fair call, I particularly enjoyed the pre-season fluff about BJ losing 10kg so he'll be a weapon. For a start he only lost the 10kg he put on during last season eating Oporto every day and secondly lose as much as you want but it doesn't change your on field attitude and brain snap liabilities.

Nope but remember he got in a fight with DCE 4 years ago! That means he's a horrible person and he will bring our entire club to its knees!

WHat NRL club was happy to sign him after that fight?

Lol I’ve never seen a bloke less motivated to play footy. He’s probably put on 10kg if anything

EXACTLY and that sums up the difference.

The reason that JTJ burned through 5 or 6 clubs is because his talent and ability was such that club after club were willing to take that risk for the potential reward (including us but we might be at the wrong end of the timeline).

What do you think is the reason that after he burned through Roosters and Manly, he couldnt get a NRL contract?

I would say at the time he was a footballer who valued his abilities a little more than his peers did and saw himself as somewhat entitled. I've also heard form a few that know him personally that during his stints with Roosters and Manly he was a little quirky and often misunderstood. He can be a little socially awkward and say/do the wrong things at the wrong times without realizing their consequences.

I've got a mate who's 100% the same, he would always say or do inappropriate things in social environments as for him it was an anxiety coping mechanism. Eventually over the years he found ways to deal with it or reel it in a little. This sort of personality can give others a false impression of someone.

It appears his time away from the game has given him the time to grow and mature mentally and we may be set to reap the reward.

How do you think this would work for 2022?

1. Laurie
2. Nofoaluma
3. Kepaoa
4. Douiehi
5. Naden
6. Brooks
7. Hastings

Nup, he'll be a bench utility IMO. Doueihi is developing nicely at 6 and I don't see him moving to the centres.

I do hope Brooks remains the 7 and Hastings plays the lock role Mmbye is playing at the moment.
Big question if mmbye does not get picked up by another club I guess he takes a centre spot ?

Brooks fan boys going into meltdown with this signing lol.
Don’t worry, if Brooks is as good as you all say he’ll fight for his spot and Hastings will play 14.

The naysayers obviously haven’t even been bothered to even take a look into how much Jackson Hastings has changed his life around since he left Australia.

In my book any person that can openly admit their faults/weaknesses and most importantly their passed mistakes and indiscretions and they grow and mature from that point, deserves a second chance.

And especially when he has the backing of the people in the know who have employed him over the years in the Super League have nothing but glowing references on the man and his character.

What a sad world we live in to be judging people on what they did when they were wet behind the ears.

Far too many wasted words on this.
Next year there will be no Walters and no Mbye.
Meaning our halves on NRL contracts are; Brooks, Doueihi and Madden.
You need depth.
Hastings provides depth.
If he shows he can offer more then he gets more game time. I don't see this signing as a contrast to the current recruitment strategy.
If it is for the right price (still unknown) it is a shrewd pick up.
Lets with hold further judgement until he touches a ball back in Oz.

Tigerlily,

If we're the only NRL club interested, the remainder aren't so he has been judged. It appears they don't share our view. Considering all but one are above us on the table, who has made the correct decision?

Exactly. BJ said Ricky Stuart was to blame, Jackson said Jackson was to blame.

The “naysayers” as you call it are the ones who look back on the club buying unwanted rejects like McQueen, Adam Blair, Josh Reynolds, Russell Packer, Moses Mbye, BJ Leilua and James Roberts who have been failures.

Jackson Hastings currently fits that unwanted reject group.

I hope he goes well but I can understand why people have doubts

If you punch DCE in the face you deserve a medal ..no a Knighthood..

Welcome Sir Hastings..

His fight with DCE would've been funny in cartoon version where Hastings ties DCE's giraffe neck into a bow-tie and his eyes are X's.

Hastings is an astute pick up...because theres absolutely no-one else available as a proven playmaker/organiser who is available AND wld want to come to our club
Plus at 95kgs he can play 13 or 7,so the future may or may not include Brooks
ATM,we just have to work way too hard for our points
Think he'll be one of Madges better ones..and he cant come soon enough!

Couldn't agree more with all you said. Takes a lot to openly admit fault for all issues in the past. In his recent Bloke in a Bar interview he lays bare his past and takes full responsibility for it. That takes guts and he appeared very genuine and humble as well.

I’d say people need to get over the fact the kid stuffed up.

Jackson has admitted his short falls his taken the hits and taken the opportunity given to him in the UK with both hand, his moved on and so should they.

What i also liked in that interview was he mentioned he was seeing a psych for quite a while.
If everything he said was an act, he deserves an oscar, so hopefully the bloke has changed his life for the better and will add something to the club.

Respectfully, you have missed my point. I AGREE with you that JTJ issues were WAY worse than Hastings issues. IMO Hastings issues arent that bad. The point is that JTJ kept getting signed because of his talent and ability.

Hastings level of talent and ability meant that he was 2 and done.
