Batting down the arms of opposing hookers is a good strategy, I'd like to see us employ it. Makes it very difficult on the opposing hooker to get a nice pass away as they have to rush it
People harp on about Melbourne always creating new tactics but Canberra have been really big on it the last few years. Masters of the one on one strip as well as a few other smaller things
How many times a game should we do it? However many times, make that the starting point of the penalty count against us.
90+% of the time, a player doing that will be penalised.
While there is a lot of negative being pointed at our attack (and I will not argue it was good) what Canberra was getting away with in defence was ridiculous. There was one replay shows where our first or 2nd receiver got smashed towards the end of a tackle count before he could pass the ball (might have been Mbye trying to run back to avoid the rush). A replay was showed and the tackler was 5 metres offside.
I am proud of the effort on the weekend. It wasn't perfect, but you can't compete when games are being officiated in such a one sided manner.
As long as the dummy half takes a step, however small, it's legal. I've seen teams do it in other games without getting in trouble for it, if the hooker isn't passing off the ground it's a very viable tactic, that's why Liddle struggled with it so much.
We hurt ourselves more than anything. Lots of dumb errors and penalties that can only be blamed on ourself.
I will agree to disagree. If you can show me examples of where teams have got away with playing the arms of the dummy half, or teams penalised for the same where the dummy half has not taken a step then I will defer.
In most games I have seen slapping at the dummy half will get you penalised unless he has run a few metres. Maybe this is one of the rule changes introduced for this season and like others (especially when officiating Tigers games) it can be reversed next week.
