Wests Tigers players and fans have been left stunned today by the shocking announcement that the club has agreed to a player swap with the Brisbane Broncos. The Wests Tigers have traded superstar fullback James Tedesco for experienced Brisbane Broncos playmaker Benji Marshall, effective immediately.
The deal will see Tedesco at Red Hill until the end of 2020, with the State of Origin representative set to play out the rest of this year in the iconic maroon jumper.
When questioned this morning, Wayne Bennet said he sees Tedesco playing a 'super-sub' role at the club, primarily positioned in the backrow. 'It's a very risky deal but, I like the Tigers so I thought I would do them a favour.' Bennet said of the deal.
Tedesco, who's future has been the flavour of the week among football fans and journalists alike, had this to say when asked about the deal: 'Yeah, look, I don't really like Brisbane or Queensland in general for that matter. But the weather has been pretty good there lately so I'm excited.'
Marshall however, was a little more reserved when asked. 'Cool, I guess?' Marshall said. 'I kinda don't mind the Tigers, though they're not going so great at the moment. They will start winning soon though because, I will add a lot of consistency and talent to the team.'
Marshall is set to take over the fullback role for the Tigers starting this week with their round five clash against the Saint George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium.
Wests Tigers reportedly picked up $500,000 of Tedesco's contract to sweeten the deal for the Queesland side. Leaving them with well over a million dollars of unavailable salary cap space, in a very similar situation to the Robbie Farah – Jason Taylor saga.
Robbie Farah admitted to playing a part in “Teddy's” decision, to reporters. 'I told him that I don't think orange is his colour. It clashes with not only his boots but also, his facial hair. Also his nose can't handle much more punishment.'
In other news, the Tigers are set to overlook Ivan Cleary for the vacant coaching position. Instead they're set to re-appoint Jason Taylor as head coach on Monday. CEO Justin Pascoe released a statement this morning saying, 'I thought it would be a funny gag to pretend we sacked Taylor. I hope our members, fans and players found it funny,'
