This weekend, a Saturday morning sweat session at the infamous Wanda Sand Dunes awaits Wests Tigers’ Pathways players.

Around 320 junior representative players will head to Cronulla for the event, in a valuable opportunity to bring squads and staff from across the club’s Pathways regions together prior to season kickoff.

Western Suburbs Magpies, Balmain Tigers, Macarthur Wests Tigers, and Wests Tigers' junior female programs will all be present at the dunes.

The session will mark the conclusion of the first block of Pathways pre-season training.

Wests Tigers Pathways & Recruitment Manager, Shannon Gallant, discussed the benefits of holding events such as Saturday’s slog.

“It’s just great to bring so many Pathways players together, as well as
staff,” Gallant said.

“The session will be extremely valuable, anyone in rugby league knows how brutal the Wanda dunes can be, but it’s also an opportunity for players and staff from all our Pathways regions to connect.

“Any time we can bring everyone
together always makes for a great team-building exercise.”

The first round for most junior representative teams will kick off on the weekend of the 1st of February, with Macarthur Wests Tigers teams to commence their season the following weekend.

Anyone know who the really tall guy 5th in line is?

This is ridiculous. How do we just let one of the top junior players walk? All this talk about no releases, then we release both Large boys, big talk that we won't do options anymore, and Luai's contract is full of them, beyond frustrating.

You could say what is the point in making a young up and coming player stay, if he and his family are hellbent on playing elsewhere?
I know we ideally need to be keeping our best young talent, but there is plenty of young talent across the NRL, maybe this gives us an opportunity to turn our focus to recruiting someone else, of simply retaining some of our other top rated junior talent.

Ashton is a no 9 we are well stocked for no 9s he sees a bigger future at manly

That maybe the case, but he is no walk up start as an 18 year old number 9 at Manly either.
If you read between the lines, the father and player manager thought Wests Tigers would give into their contract demands and got shirty when it didn’t happen.
Fair enough if they are getting better deals at Manly, but loyalty works both ways, a bit of give and take is required no matter how much potential a player possesses.

You can’t keep them all - we have enough hookers and I’m sure there will be more out of Westfields in next couple of years.

What was his management alleged to have wanted?
Top 30 big money deals with a contract clause that says Onitoni is free to go if Galvin extends.
The halves are not his best position, but regardless the best he could hope for is being 5th choice halve at Manly in 2025, where he would have highly likely become our 4th choice halve with us had he had stayed.

I dont think either were after top 30 'big money' deals given neither are yet eligible for first grade, unless it was a contract that was development this year culminating in top 30 probably 26/27 for Onitoni and 28 for Ashton? Personally i think the requested clause for Onitoni is fair enough but that was discussed ad nauseum back in September.

Personally I would have been happy for Onitoni to be on a Development deal in 2025 and moving into the top 30 in 2026, but I still believe he will be better suited to fullback or centre, he should not be in direct competition with halves early on in his career, therefore should not have been concerned on whether or not Galvin re-signs with the club.
Anyway he has departed, it looks like Ashton has as well, so no point worrying about them for the next few years.
