Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

What are Wests Tigers going to do with the money they have saved by getting rid of Taupau and Lodge - sit on their hands? The club needs a very capable centre for goodness sake.

Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor explains decision to allow Martin Taupau to sign with Manly

THE decision to move Martin Taupau on with a year to run on his contract has shocked Wests Tigers fans, but Jason Taylor says it’s the right call for the club.

Speaking exclusively to foxsports.com.au on the day Manly trumpeted the signing of the Kiwi international, Taylor explained why the Tigers would be better off without Taupau.

“It’s a pretty simple story for us. We made Marty an offer earlier in the year, which after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing he decided to knock back,” Taylor said.

“He obviously went and investigated his options throughout the back end of the year ... there was a lot of talk that he was a bit restless and that was due to the fact that he was talking to other clubs.

“It became clear to us that he’s obviously been offered some really good money for 2017 and that he was going to take up that option.

“For us as a club when it was clear that he wasn’t going to be here for 2017 it was a fairly simple equation, in that if we let Marty go now as opposed to keeping him for one more year, we can take some money forward in our salary cap and we can put ourselves in a much better position to keep our best young players.”

The Tigers’ salary cap problems have been well documented in 2015, with chairwoman Marina Go earlier this year admitting: “It’s probably about three years before we unravel the mess we have inherited.”

Taylor has tried to speed that process up with some aggressive decision making on the roster, with club favourite Keith Galloway released to join the Super League and premiership winning winger Pat Richards also allowed to leave.

The coach also made a massive statement in the last weeks of the regular season by telling club captain Robbie Farah he was free to leave the club, despite having two years to run on his contract.

Farah appears set to dig his heels in but Taupau is arguably the second biggest star on the roster and his exit will free up plenty of cash to secure the futures of the young talent at the club.

“Going forward we’ve got our halves (Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses) coming off contract at the end of next year (2017), and particularly some good young forwards as well who will be off at the end of next season,” Taylor said.

“It just became a simple decision and a smart decision as far as suring up the future with the young guys as opposed to having Marty stay with us for one more year.”

Taylor identified young guns Tyler Cassel, Dallas Graham and JJ Felise as forwards the Tigers could build their future around and expected 23-year-old prop Sauaso Sue to have a big year in 2016, stepping into Taupau’s role.

As for the lost experience, Taylor said a one-year deal taken up by Tigers veteran Dene Halatau and the signing of Raiders workhorse Joel Edwards would be key to filling that gap.

Taylor said the Tigers weren’t looking to bring anyone in from outside the club to fill Taupau’s roster spot.

“It’s not about bringing anyone else in. Joel Edwards is an experienced forward and he’ll cover that position that Marty has filled for us,” Taylor said.

“We’ve already got an experienced guy like Dene Halatau playing our lock/back-row area and Dene did a great job for us last year.

“We’ve got Sauaso Sue who’s really improved throughout the course of this season who we’re really confident in, so we’re confident we’ve got that position covered.

“We’ve got a young guy, (20-year-old) Tyler Cassel, who played NYC this year and he’s transitioned into the full-time squad.

“So, yeah, there’s a couple of other young front-rowers — Dallas Graham (is one for the future) and JJ Felise was in our 20s this year and will be again next year.

“They’re two good young front-rowers we want to keep going forward with and the (Taupau) decision helps us to be able to work on ensuring that we’re able to keep those guys at the club.

“It’s a strong decision that will ensure we keep those young guys with us.”

Who can blame him, why would anyone of his calibre stay loyal to an unloyal organisation.

Good luck to you Martin, i loved your presence on the field, you will be surely missed!!

i'm turning 50 in a few weeks, i'm in a good comfort zone, me and my partner love going to the footy, but i'm at a loss at the moment with the club, i will buy one more season ticket, if we look like we did last year, or worse, i might consider taking up golf with the misses.

GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER TIGERS!!

I won't be renewing next season , I can't be arsed with the club anymore !
I'm over all the crap we are put through season after season .
Once Taylor goes I may sign up again ??
If that makes me a Bandwagoner so be it !

It's sad to see as he's a genuine crowd pleaser.

However If the Sea Eagles have paid in the vicinity of 700k per year then so be it.

What gets to me is players like Taupau, and Austin, have had there careers practically SAVED by the Tigers.

Taupau would be still stuck in State cup and Austin would probably be in Super League right now.

You would think they would be a bit more grateful and want to repay the faith. It's just a kick in the guts. We take the risk on them and the second it starts to pay off they bail.

So many muppets on here.

Who says Taupau leaving had anything to do with Taylor? Isn't it far more likely its about the fact he can earn $500k with Manly this season or $100K with us. If i could increase my salary by 500% i'd probably be jumping out of my skin to do so too.

But wait, it's all the management and coach's fault that a greedy individual priorities money over form or loyalty? Please…

How come the same people that think qe are going to be crap next year are angry the club released Taupau for next year. If we are focusing on gwtting better in 2017 then releasing him for next year is the right call. We offered him 550 a year for 2 years and they offered 750 a year for 4 yrs. Imo they overspent on a prop and Wayne Bennett as everyone knows would agree. Given that the question comes as to if we should release him next year and to be honest given where our squad is then its prob a good idea as it allows us to retain some guys going forward and to forward pay some contracts instead of backpay them like previously

so this year its Tyler Cassel, Dallas Graham and JJ Felise

heard it all before…in 2012 it was buchanan, spence, luani

13 it was rowe santi lodge fine

last year its lovett hooter and loilaeve

just about had it

Also to all those calling him greedy well of course he is and so is everyone else an extra 500k over 4 yrs and anyone who didnt take it drserves to be an idiot

Why do they always mention the halves and looking after them (contract wise), but not tedescco! I'm pretty sure he is off in 2017 too. No wonder the bloke looked around before.

Halves are off contract now, Tedesco is off next year.

Oh it goes way further back than that…I remember 2003 ...Sheensy saying we have a great crop of kids in Marshall Farah Heighington Laffranchi Gibbs and Fulton coming through....

we will loss most of players next signing, why the hell would you stay?

Tedesco will be the nail in the coffin.

Tedesco/Moses/Brooks/Nofa

Only reason I still watch our games lol

We should not have let Taupau go unless we got something back from Manly…..not a huge fan of Ballin but I'd have settled for a Jamie Buhrer.

But we are talking WT managment....and only our mgmt is that stupid.

Pressure now is really on JT and Mgmt for 2016......we obviously have lots of quality depth to allow players like Taupau to go......so I'm expecting a huge successful year. God help them if they donot produce.

If I was woodsy, teddy, moses & brooks I'd also be asking for a release.....WT would probably even pay their salary at another club.....what morons. Getting harder to have any respect for this club.

We don't know for sure what money was offered to Marty by WT or Manly. Not that, this matters now.
All done and dusted :frowning:

this is it. It's always about the future - which is great PR speak, as it's a term which cannot be defined. We've been building toward the future for years - seems it'll never become the present.

To clarify - I have no issue with WT not exceeding what they believe is market value for Taupau. It's just the early release that annoys me.
JT's video is garbage. If Taupau going allows us to keep a couple of replacement level kids, then it's a massive waste.

seriously, i just heard JT say letting Marty was a good decision.

am i alone here, JT is possibility the most stupid coach or the most uneducated person i've ever heard, i'm not saying he can't speak, he's a frighted little man, can anyone else see it?

I just can't believe i follow this organisation, if it wasn't that i slept with a tigers teddy bear 50 years ago i would never look back at the tigers.

I think its a good decision he is gone. Waste of space. 99% of the time, looks like tarzan, plays like Jane. Overated flavour of the month that didn't deliver any consistency.

If he wants to go, then seeya champ. I'm not at all surprised he didn't have the balls to say it how it was for the last month or so.
