Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

I dont know the ins and outs, no one here does
Is money the problem?
Is the coach the problem?
All the rumour states is he wants to leave
Imo theres no point him being here if he doesnt want to be here…Id love him to stay, but if he has no desire or hunger or passion, he doesnt wanna be here...then whats the point?

But the big problem is what he is worth as a player to the team under the new interchange rules

Personally with our current squad he could struggle if asked for extra minutes , especially with Keefy gone

But can we survive with no Keefy ,no Lodge (if he leaves) and no Taupau ??

The offer from the Titans must be tempting , they want to make him the face of the Titans and they are prepared to pay him big bucks

It's a fair question - he's far from the finished article, and in many ways his profile exceeds his actual worth to the team on the pitch (highlight reel plays, distinctive look etc).

That said, it's a massive concern that a high profile player is *reportedly* wanting to leave. If he were to leave on our terms, it's another thing - but him wanting out is a bad sign for the club.

But he wants to leave for greener pastures assuming what I have heard is correct in regards to being made the face of an NRL club

We didn't stop Austin leaving for greener pastures

He's probably on peanuts. If another club has come in waving three / four times what he's on now and we cannot compete, he'd be chomping at the bit to go.

The figures I heard CB were almost comparable with the figures that Canberra offered Tedesco

So Yes we are probably talking 2.5 -3 times what he is on at the Tigers assuming that Taupau's upgrade he got from the WT's took him to about 200 k ??

I assume you mean GC, and I can imagine they'd be throwing big $$$ around as they're in desperate need of a good news story up there.
Thing is, we let Austin go as we had Moses coming through and deemed him a better long-term option.
I can't see any fwds coming through in a similar situation. We're desperately short up front, both in prospects and veterans.

I think Happy hit the nail on the head, what is Marty worth???. He is a great marketing tool, the punters and the media love him and he is a high impact player but at the end of the day is worth what you may pay three players. We all know the game will be different next year with the new interchange rule,so that may also look at the way Taylor views Marty value.

I would love to see him stay but not on silly money that further restricts our ability to recruit quality 80min players next year and beyond

I don't know the ins and outs of his current Contract , but i'm only guessing that we would of not paid big dollars when we signed him from the Bulldogs as he was in Reggies and looking for an opportunity to play consistent footy in 1st Grade.
There is no doubt that his worth has gone up considerably since being with us and hitting the International stage .
For him to be asking for a release ( if it is to be believed ) you would have to think that he is not happy at our Club for whatever reason he might have , cause you would think that his Contract would be paid accordingly from 2017 and beyond.
Don't know if possible but he could even be topped up for next year when negotiating his extending Contract. I seriously can't believe we can't match other Clubs for his Market value and make him stay .

There is something deeper going on , something really stinks at our Club . It is very rare that players ask for a release from there Contracts , i can't even think of players that have from any Clubs…..only us that have allowed players to look at other Options Galloway, Heighno , Gibbs had signed Contracts that never got completed due to the Club wanting them gone.

Yes the Titans I have mentioned it in previous threads

It has been the rumour up here for a while , and when I heard it from the person I did hear it from I had little doubt

What is Dobbo's track record like? I don't watch 360 much, but whenever I've seen him he seems to talk garbage - standard News Ltd sensationalism and gossip.

This was being talked about far earlier than Dobbo brought it up 1st time let alone this time mate

Just brilliant. Gold Coast, stony broke and shored up financially by the NRL, use NRL money to rip us off by stealing Taupau! Another brilliant move by Smith and his mates! Wreck one club to strengthen another!

Yeah the rumours are one thing, but this is a guy on TV saying that he's definitively gone for 2016\. To wriggle room - he's gone.

Maybe he doesn't want to stay at a club whose supporters seem to put one player ahead of everything else and threaten to walk away if said player moves on. Throw that in with the money he's on and there's not much incentive is there

Scary thinng is Tedesco is managed by Sam Ayoub…so are half of the big names in NRL...none will come to us now and Teddy will be talked into asking for a release.

Why, he's playing with his mates. Isn't that why he reneged on the Raiders?

I don't necessarily see how wanting out early to chase a big money deal equates to being unhappy. Sure there's a bit of turmoil around the joint, but maybe he wants to chase the dollar? Why stay somewhere for little/no result for a pittance when you can do the same thing elsewhere for three times as much?

Exactly. Why wait for the big bucks till the yr after next when he could run the risk of a career ending injury. He'd be the next Tuiaki in regards to leaving a legacy as a cult hero, but having nothing to show for it financially. Get the big bucks while you can.
