FORMER NRL stars Ryan Girdler and Jamie Soward have laid into Wests Tigers five-eighth Mitchell Moses after it was revealed he was looking to leave the club this season.

Moses reportedly wants to join Parramatta as soon as possible, but the Tigers on Thursday denied the playmaker an immediate release. Moses’ desire to leave was sparked by the Tigers retracting a contract offer they initially presented to the pivot, but Girdler says the 22-year-old owes it to his teammates to tough it out with the club who launched his NRL career.

“He’s been paid overs his whole career based on potential and again now he’s been offered contracts based on potential and not on what he’s actually done,” Girdler said on Triple M’s Dead Set Legends on Thursday. “Then all of a sudden the club’s in the absolute s*** and all the other players that have spent the past five or six years building this club and working hard at this club are in it and he wants out. “At some point it doesn’t become about the boards and your management and all that sort of stuff, it becomes about the guys you’re training with and playing with and your mates, and that’s what I can’t believe at the moment.

“It needs to be, ‘OK I’ll finish out the season, I’ll do the right thing’ not by the club, but by the guys he’s playing with week in week out. There’s got to be some sort of connection with those guys.“How do you think they’re going to feel … putting the jumper on with a guy they know doesn’t want to be there?”

Soward says Moses hasn’t proven himself in first grade yet and doesn’t have the right to play hard ball when it comes to demanding big money. “To want a release after six games when your team is really playing pretty poorly, it’s unfathomable to think you would walk out because you’re not happy,” he said.

Balmain Tigers legend and Mitchell Moses’ uncle Ben Elias says his nephew doesn’t want to leave the club but is being forced out because other players are more highly valued. Elias says after re-signing halfback Luke Brooks for two more years, the Tigers are now focused on securing the signatures of Aaron Woods and James Tedesco. “They’ve prioritised the other two (Tedesco and Woods) ahead of Mitchell and they’ve told him that and said, ‘Look, we take the contract off the table we originally offered you.’ So it’s basically saying, ‘You’re not wanted here,’” Elias told Channel Nine.

“It’s offensive. He’s quite offended by it, he’s very emotional. He loves the club and he loves the blokes around him.”

Wests want the four most influential players at the club (Moses, Brooks, Woods and Tedesco) to stay on in 2018, but will find it difficult to afford them all. Despite the turmoil, Elias wants Moses to remain at Concord rather than leave midway through the season to wear an Eels jersey. I think he should stay at the Tigers especially if the club wants him, the management wants him, they’ve stated clearly now they want to keep him,” Elias said.

Moses declined to comment on Thursday when approached by reporters at Sydney airport as the Tigers headed for Townsville, as did his teammates in waiting at Parramatta training. But new coach Ivan Cleary said he didn’t expect problems from his five-eighth. “I would have thought if he’s made the decision to move on, like other players at other clubs, it’s important that you finish well at the club at you’re at,” Cleary told Triple M.

Cleary also backed the club’s stance to focus on the signatures of Woods and Tedesco. “Over the weekend, there was a bit an adjustment in the salary cap forecasting for next year, so in fairness, we wanted to secure some risk against the club,” Cleary said. “So we decided to prioritise James Tedesco and Aaron Woods and withdrew an offer

I'm ok with whatever Cleary wants. I have confidence in him as I believe that he will make this club a powerhouse in a short period of time.

Some people didn't have much of an opinion of Soward, however the statement he made regarding Mitchel Moses has not proved himself in first grade is absolutely spot on..I commend him for saying that…..

Cleary knows exactly what he's doing. The Club is currently being held to ransom by Isaac Moses and his charges and this nonsense has to stop now. If Tedesco and Woods can't or won't "get on the bus" we are better off without them. The Roosters lost a champion fullback in Roger Tuivasa-Scheck to the Warriors last year and they're still pretty competitive (tonight's loss to the Broncos aside)

Moses has destroyed his reputation. He has basically said 22 other blokes in the team are not good enough for him to want to play with them, that he is too good for them.

Teddy and Woods have basically said the same thing. Very ordinary. If I was the rest of the squad, I would refuse to play with them.

Uncle Benny..considering we threw offers at Moses, he wasnt willing to sign when he had the chance, for money he hasnt earned, hardly says we dont want him, it says if he cant decide, we dont have the time to wait on one kid, when we have others we need to sort too.

All it says is Moses is a pre madonna who threw a tantrum coz we dont feel he's the superstar he has the idea of in his head.

Have Uncle Benny get you a limo to the eels. Get stuffed.

This is probably the best article I've read all week, in so far as Girds and Soward are 100% with what they are saying and echoing the thoughts of probably just about every Tigers fan out there. Brooks, Moses, even Sirro was in the same boat, they were all being paid on potential, and so far I'm not seeing Mitch stepping up and winning games for us. As for Elias, well he couldn't lie straight in bed based on those comments. The Tigers made it perfectly clear they were going to revise the offer to Moses based on what the NRL is now suggesting the cap should be set at.

Never a fan of Soward but he was always professional on the field, his comments continue that professionalism.Girdler and Soward are 100% correct with their comments.
Out of our so called "big 4" Moses is the only one i have lost respect for.I continue to believe that Woods and Tedesco will stay but are only waiting for the dust to settle.Time will tell

"He loves the club and he loves the blokes around him.” Yeah, right Benny! That's why he hasn't signed a contract that was tabled months ago! I agree that this is a very good article with 2 guys who have had decent careers, if not stellar, telling it the way it is.
Moses has shown that he is way of the pace as far as being a team mate that everyone would want to play with. It's all about Mitch!
I just hope he puts his head down and does his best for 'the club he loves' and his team mates.

Good article and nice to see someone outside of the club backing the stance. Moses is probably listening to the wrong people, he should have signed at the end of last year, "loves the club" yeah right…....

If he did he would of signed weeks ago or even when we pulled his offer not take less than a day to join a fierce rival club of ours & ask for an immediate release.

Moses just cares about himself, he is a spoilt brat.

MOSES will stay if the 10 days are not up he will stay

No idea what this even means

On Girds and Soward, refreshing to see someone in the media finally back the club. There was a time I would have demanded heads roll if we lost 3 out of the 4, but It's become more and more obvious the club is bending over backwards for them. Despite what gutter rags try to report, the club is not in crisis. The "crisis" is that the club has had enough of being dictated to and finally wants an answer. Brooks knew his options were limited so he got on board right away. The others know they have options on the table and have had a sook because they still wanted to milk us for a bit longer. Cleary made it known he was having none of it, so now the pressure is on them, it's "waah we're sick of playing for a club always in turmoil". Funny Teddy wasn't saying these things back in January. It was all positive back then. All positive when he talked about pay cuts. How's that going now? These guys have lost the upper hand in negotiations and this is their way of dealing with it. Kudos to Cleary.

Agree.

Remember Cleary moved Jennings, Lewis and a few other big names at Panthers. They reset, started new and he got them playing finals football. No difference here. We can either be happy coming between 8th -14th for the next couple of years by having a big chunk of our salary cap on potential players or we can start again and invest wisely to build an overall strong roster. Ive already seen more in Cleary in 1 week then what i saw in JT for over 2 years. I love how the media has turned on the so called big 4 and are really shaming them. Has anyone heard Widdop or Bird come out and tell us there feelings about their future. Reynolds from the dogs comes out and says he wants to stay. These so called tiger players should learn to conduct themselves with integrity and class.

Spot on. But I can't help but feel we'll be under the hammer against the Cows. Imagine being labelled as not good enough by a teammate. How could you trust him in a game situation.
If we get close to Nth Qld then Cleary is miracle worker and deserves every cent he's paid

There's not one leader amongst this playing group. That's the problem. Woods as captain should of set the example. One way or the other. If he's staying he should of signed and not dragged it out if he's leaving he should of said so by now. I'll go as far as saying woods is the worst captain in rugby league history. The bloke has no idea
