Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Has anyone realised what a coup Newcastle has pulled off.

By signing SKD, Guerra, Watson and others. They basically could Nudge Pearce over to their side.

Cronulla did the same thing to us, signing Morris, Heighington, Ryan which allowed them a good shot at Fifita and Gibbs (ok that was us offloading an all thumbs engine room!)

Ive seen us hire big from NZ. But not really identify a source team to poach from.

What would make me really glad is if NR 30 came from the Cowboys. It won't be Hess (unless he is in the bad books with the coach). But I could see the Cowboys maybe loosing Cooper, Fensom or another prop.

Newcastle might have signed some good players BUT look at their coach - knee high to a grasshopper and I can’t get the image of him slapping Trent Barrett around on the sideline in front of a packed stadium when he was coaching the Dragons … how can you respect a midget like that, Pearce will have a picnic under this guy, nightcap (knightcap) anyone?

Brown is a decent coach, better than JT, he should never have coached saints while his former team mates were still playing. He has had bugger all to work with at Newcastle until next year.

It will be interesting to see who ends up a better signing out of matulino and packer… I'm leaning towards matulino as I think his big engine will provide the work rate that we've lost with the departure of woods (I'm a big critic of woods by the way so don't take this is an endorsement of him... I'm very happy to see him go).

It's ok mate, there is no shame in giving Woods some praise for his efforts. People seem to forget that he was a very young prop thrown in to lead a fairly weak pack early on in his career, and he did a great job for us for many seasons with little support up front or any skills shown by the halves.

Woods was an exceptional prop early on , probably the only blokes I've seen handle grade as well as Woods was Lazarus and Webcke

And I rate Lazarus one of the best props I've seen play

I’d agree with that, he hasn’t had much to work with most of the time
He’s usually been the one to stop in our forwards a lot of the others didn’t matter as they weren’t dangerous

It will be where injury or bargain dictates I dare say. Or, if we're not in the finals hunt, they might pick up a minimum wage player and pocket the rest for next year.

If we do decent next year expect more players to Want to join the bus.

In a 16 team comp where real talent is very hard to find, it’s is near impossible to lure quality players to struggling clubs. You might be able to snare a quality player who is on the wane and is at the back end of his career, but to get a player who is at the top of his game…forget it.

We would have to be top five for three years before a marquee would seriously consider joining the bus

Do we really need a marquee signing anyway. We've had plenty of marquee players - Robbie, Benji, Woods the slug, Turdesco & even Moses in his own mind.

I just think you keep adding quality players and see how they go. I reckon Newcastle have improved a lot of they've lost Gagai.

There’s a reason woods still makes the Australian and NSW teams.

Pretty useless post without any elaboration

To elaborate … I would say that a group of exfootballing greats(past coaches and selectors), who have played at that level and know what kind player you need to be to consistently make a national or state rep side is the reason he still makes the rep teams.
15 games in green and gold
14 for NSW
A few city country’s, probably because he’s a good footballer.

Well he made the Australian side because a certain Matt Scott was out injured

As for NSW have a serious look at how many series you blokes have won in the last 12 years

If Gallen played prop ( as he should of Woods probably doesn't make the starting NSW side until this year )

Qld found him out in Game 2 and 3 as he doesn't work hard enough and gets found out laterally on the inside plays
