The Storm Rorting Super Thread.....

They are playing for nothing and every team who plays them have really nothing to gain.

My understanding is that 2 points is up for grabs every week during the regular season so melbourne cant get 2 points if they win and neither can the team they beat.

They are over the cap by 700k this year and until they unload 700k in talent i think they shouldnt be allowed in the comp, they are cheating every week they play, they are cheating the system the fans and their opposing teams

Since the NRL has determined them guilty of cheating this year they should be kicked out of the comp and not be able to play this season at all

The team that versus them will still have 2 points to play for but the even without that they can't just shut down for the year. what about sponsors, contracts with 9,fox,aami stadium stadium caterers, members etc.. they still need to play

Its either a bunch more byes or teams play melbourne. As the Tigers haven't played them yet, I am with you Ron, give each team the 2 and cut them out

it just doesnt make sense, they have been found guilty, the players who are getting paid too much are still playing in the team, why if found guilty for being 700k over the cap for this year is this team still allowed to play and potentially cost teams a finals spot?

Rugby League has only ever been a stronghold in NSW and Qld - there is history, blood sweat and tears at all levels down to the juniors - clubs in these states ( even new clubs ) have a connection to the game and its history - The NRL has tried to manufacture a national competition with teams from states with no previous connection to rugby league and has failed in the past with Adelaide and Perth going down the gurgler - Melbourne was their grand achievement - no way was their crowning glory going to fail - for too long they have turned a blind eye to Melbourne's rorts and now it has come back to bite them on the bum - i think there is a lot of back stabbing and finger pointing to come in this sorry saga.

yep, every team they beat gets 2 points every team who hasnt played them gets 2 points and they piss off for 2010, none of their players should be available for rep duties either

Rugby League will fire on! Melbourne will keep their rubbish game of AFL and the Central Coast Bears will be off next year or in 2012 (watch out for Moltz signing with them …). Bring footy back to the heartland!

The issue Hadley raised about the ATO is a valid one.

They do like chasing profile cases

yeah that's what I asked, they've been smacked for cheating, yet are still able to play with their full compliment of players… which is no good for the teams yet to play them.

I agree, they shouldn't be playing until they get their act together as it is an unfair advantage over their opposition.

We should offer Cronk and Lima a free trip to Fiji while they are off and send Humphrey's over to discuss 'arrangements'

heh sounds good

Systematic cheating, two sets of files with the true amounts locked away in a secret room….

Brian Waldron will do time for this imo

Massive, a dark day for Rugby League indeed.

Paul Kent just said the same thing on the Matty Johns Show

Kent was very good tonight. I liked his suggestion about cutting players, rather than just letting them all take pay cuts. The squad was illegally assembled, and so they should have to break it up.

After having sometime to think about it, I am disgusted at the melbourne management and also the NRL. It should have been caught a long time ago as most people suspected it, it appears Schubert isn't much at catching the cheats. The melbourne management have done a lot to destroy the chance of league ever having a chance in melbourne (though slim) and yet again league is in trouble. Most of all I feel that they have cheated the melbourne supporters the most. What ever pride and passion they had developed for their club has been misdirected and misplaced.

I don't think you can blame the NRL (or the Melbourne Storm Board of Directors - but their management, yes). The Storm would have a budget of about $15 million annually. It's not too hard to hide $400,000 - $700,000 in the accounts. As well as the NRL checking them for salary cap breaches the entire accounts would be audited by an independent auditor under the Corporations law - and this auditor has similarly not picked up any discrepancies.

There is a big difference between suspecting and finding evidence. NRL now has the evidence and has taken decisive action.
Will be interesting to see if we ever get to the bottom of it though. Surely players and their managers would have known if they were getting paid a different amount to what was stated in their contracts. And, you would have to assume a fair few inside the club management knew what was going on. To the credit of some in the club, I understand that there were whistleblowers who helped the truth come out.

If it can be shown that players were receiving money that they didn't declare in tax returns, you'd think they would cop some hefty fines there too.

I hope other clubs take a look at this and act responsibly. All these rumours of salary cap rorts could start getting looked at a lot more closely now! I'd hope the Wests Tigers are clean but I wouldn't be surprised if every single club bent the rules in some way or another.

problem is some teams play them twice - should they get 4 points? the only fair way to kick them out would be a massive redraw so that all teams play the same number of games. ain't gonna happen.

i do agree they should have some penalty this year. imagine if we lose players to injury against them. Or, and I hope not, we need the win in round 25 to make the 8 and they beat us.

how about make them play with 12 men each week and a three man bench? and if you only play them once, you don't play them in Melbourne

why the hell are they still in the comp this year??
get the cheats out and make them learn the hard way..they should nt return this year
im guessing the wont get any supporters to there new home stdium neither pfft what a disgrace!!
just makes the NRL look bad

Yeah, but you can't just give their scheduled opponents 2 points for a bye. What happens for the teams who play them once instead of twice?

It is a real mess. The worst in rugby league that I can remember. It is on international news already. I hated the Dogs but this takes the cake. Maybe we now have a reason for NSW losing 4 in a row … hint hint
