SUPERSTAR Cyndi Lauper has lashed out at Miley Cyrus and a new generation of performers selling sexplicit pop.

"Everybody is trying to one-up everyone else," Lauper told Confidential.

"It's sad that little girls feel they have to behave like a ho. There is no distinction anymore. And, still, it's men who hold the power in all of this, not women."

In Australia on a national tour, Lauper said she was appalled Cyrus associated herself with Robin Thicke's controversial hit, Blurred Lines, in a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, which sent shock waves around the world.

Lauper claimed the song - with its 'I know you want it' refrain - encourages date rape.

"It says it's a blurred line … when a girl says no when she really means yes,'' Lauper said.

"So does that leave the door open? Is date rape OK? Are we back to that again?

WHAT MILEY DID NEXT

"But what do you do when a 20-year-old wants to be one of the big kids and decides she's going to have a mock porn act?

"It's not modern dance. It's schlock. It wasn't even tacky. It was sleazy.''

Lauper said she feels sorry for the former Hannah Montana.

"She seems like such a nice girl. It's sad when somebody has to try that hard,'' Lauper said.

"I think it's better to go the high road and find the art in everything.''

Men who hold the power?

Date rape?

Can't stand lauper's feminist bullsh##

Feminist bullsh##? You mean asking to be treated with respect? Asking men not to write songs in which consent is treated as a nothing interview? Feminism isn't bullsh## man, you need to wake up.

The song isn't about rape….he has a wife.

Creating drama and inequality and putting the blame on men for something Miley did at her own accord shouldn't be accepted. Feminism used to be about equality between men and women which I strongly believe in. However, the modern feminist commonly believes they are ABOVE men and SUPERIOR to men.

In this article lauper has tried to perpetuate gender stereotypes and in itself is sexism. Why does she try shift the blame to Thicke and men in general when the entirety of the blame should be put on Miley?

_Posted using RoarFEED 2013_

That is far from what the modern feminist thinks. The blame of that video should not be in Miley but on Thicke because it was HIS revolting song. The fact that he has a wife doesn't stop him from being a massive misogynist. He's said before, in all seriousness "what a pleasure it is to degrade women". His song is about a woman who clearly doesn't want "it" being told repeatedly "I know you want it" before him saying that consent is a "blurred line". That's a song about rape.

Modern feminism strives for equality. It is perceived as women wanted a superior position because so many men incorrectly believe women to be equal in representation in today's society, and that therefore the feminist movement is invalid. Which is just untrue. Women are still objectified and underrepresented in nearly every area of modern society, and songs like Blurred Lines do nothing but counteract any kind of equality or respect feminist are trying to achieve.

When Lauper talks about "men" she's placing blame not on every individual man, but the society that men created through their decades of being largely in power. She's not targeting you, or every man, but the societal structure that men benefit from.

Tell me, how is any of that Miley's fault? Her dance was racist, that needs to be acknowledged, but that's not the point anyone is trying to make. People are attacking her for her lack of clothing. Saying that she is the one perpetuating the disgusting message in Thicke's song. When in reality, she should NEVER be judged by what is or isn't on her body, and the idea that she could be blamed for something that she didn't write or sing is preposterous, and outright sexist.

Have you seen Miley for the past….6 months or so? What she did at the vma's was nothing new for her. Watch her newest video and you'll understand why the blame rests with her

Blame for what? Shame shouldn't be put on Miley for how she dresses - no one should. Lauper was wrong to do so. But the situation at the VMAs was brought on entirely by Thicke and Thicke's song. The only thing you should be attacking Miley for is the racist undertones of her song & dance

I feel sorry for Liam Hemsworth in all of this, if he's still with Miley that is.

Why should thicke be blamed for her actions? She did so at her own accord?….

She should realise that she has a huge influence on the younger generations and should do better in setting an example.

Her actions were her own, but they werent the bad thing about the performance - Thicke's song was. He shouldn't be blamed for her actions, but it's his actions we should be concentrating on.

As I have said, the only negative thing about her performance were the racist undertones, and she needs to be held accountable for them, but that isn't what anyone is talking about in this situation.

Why should a type of dancing be reserved for one specific race? It was inappropriate at such a public and widely televised event but it wasn't racist. That's like saying Caucasians shouldn't make hip hop music….

Wtigers. you're in the minority if you don't think that what she did wasn't embarrassing or ridiculous. Not just in this thread, but in general.

Just look at the dislike bar and read the comments.

It's racist because in the video she claims and acts as if "twerking" is her thing, that she's invented it etc. and it takes away from the people who get stigmatized for this dance daily. She will never have the same kind of backlash a black woman will for doing the same actions and she uses this for her advantage, which is bad. Additionally, it gives her credit for something that isn't traditionally associated with her or her culture. Furthermore, she uses black women as props and accessories to make herself look more "urban", completely objectifying them.
Smarter people who've actually had to face the repercussions of these kinds of actions have talked about this before me, I suggest you look them up.

Interestingly enough you ignored my main point.

Would you consider macklemore or eminem racist?

Very few things should be exclusive in terms of race. Saying someone can't do something due to their skin colour is more racist than the act itself.

Well I would disagree with the depth of the performance but if you want to bring it up it has been happening since before even Pat Boone & Elvis

I consider Eminem racist because he says racist things but no, as its a different situation. She shouldn't do it, as her actions hurt black people. It's because of the privilege she has as a white person that makes the actions racist. She is benefiting from something that black people are stigmatized for. That, in turn, makes her actions racist, as they hurt black people. Eminem and Macklemore are a different situation. I personally don't support white rappers as they often gain more popularity than their black counterparts. However, unlike Miley with the twerking, it's not as if they're taking advantage of a culture they know nothing about. Which is what Miley is doing.
I agree, you should never tell someone not to do something because of their skin, but in this situation, it's actually hurting black people BECAUSE of her skin, and as such should be stopped.

PS, you can't be racist against white people.

PPS, did I address your point this time? Because if not I'm lost.

It's been happening forever. Most artists have stolen from black artists without properly crediting them.

I know.

I stole my lute solo from a Senegalese fellow I saw at a Renaissance Fair in Darfur in 1999

You can't be racist against white people?!….

Are you serious or taking the piss?

_Posted using RoarFEED 2013_

Serious. You can be prejudiced, but racism is on a bigger scale. It's prejudice and privilege. So, because white people have larger societal powers, you can only be prejudiced against them. There will never be prejudice against white people on a societal scale, evident in laws, the actions of authority figures, and the general societal structure. As such, you cannot be racist against white people. Smarter people than me have talked about this, so that's all I'm gonna say on this issue or the Miley Cyrus issue, but there are all opinions that have been widely stated before, so if you want to know where I got my arguments from, a simple google search will do.

(Thanks for the discussion btw, I don't like arguing over the Internet but you remained civil and I appreciate that. Most people resort to anger and violent words when someone states a different opinion)
