Wests Tigers v Penrith Trial *Live Thread

Enjoyed the trip to Penrith, talking all things Tigers with @cochise
My thoughts:
Musgrove was very good and intimidated
Walters at hooker will work and seems a good option
First half forward pack played with intent
Attack looked quick in first half
Doueihi passed his first test
Johns was surprisingly good
Talau took wrong options- nowhere near ready imo
Leilua made some strong runs
2nd half was immaterial as almost anyone getting near our top 17 were off

I watched both games. I know it’s early days but based on those games Doueihi is a better fullback than Mitchell. I may change my mind at the end of the season but I’m doubtful.

Geez. Its like the record( big piece of black vinyl that plays music for the youngins) is stuck at this time every year. I will say the same thing I say at this time year after year, it’s a bloody TRIAL!!!! Wait until competition proper before panicking.

I understand what your saying ...but you have players playing for their positions , contracts ....maybe their careers ......

A lot of concerns out of tonight's game ...Madge has a heap of work to turn that performance around

With a minimal spread of first graders, mostly fringe players at that it is not as dire as you allude to @happy_tiger

Well we need as much confidence as we can muster leading into the 2020 season ...that did jack squat for our confidence

For a club that will go into the season with 2 new pieces in its spine you would think we try and build some combinations

From what I've seen we threw out the most inexperienced squad of any side bar NZ (who of course had many players playing All Stars )

So either 15 clubs have it wrong or we got it right

First half we were solid, second half woeful, but that's to be expected when you've got jersey flegg players playing nrl pros..
Talau was awful. His pathetic reads in defence rushing in opened the door to three of their tries. Poor Cini was twice left up against a 3 on 1 and nothing he could do. Offered nothing in attack, very lame, predictable and ineffective.
Reynolds was OK at 5/8 but absolutely awful at hooker. Madden was sound and continues to improve.
I don't know why the likes of McQueen and McIntyre got a run. It's hard to judge the youngsters. Over the course is the match Penrith would have had 70%+ possession and territory, largely due to shocking refereeing and a few errors by us. 3 sin bins on a game was a need one. Both our sin bins came when we had the ball too. Luai baited Johns and he messed up his play the ball and then they started punching one another. The other binning came when we were hitting the ball up off our line knocked the ball back which the refs ruled a knock on. Then suddenly it became a penalty to them! SO ET obviously mouthed off stating how biased and crap the refs were and got binned.
Johns ran harder than anyone in our team. Made great post contact metres. Very fiery and aggressive player but didn't touch the ball once in the second half.
Doueihi was OK. A nice assist but also a worrying moment when he was very casual gathering a kick and got tackled in the in goal when we had plenty of time to get out.

Second half there were so many changes it's no wonder we didn't have communication in defence. Not much to worry about as Madge obviously didn't place the much importance in the win. Panthers had a much stronger side on the field at all times

Being told by all and sundry your the next big thing , then producing is another thing .. Talau fits this category good luck with all that .. young Masters can attest to that !

So in the NSW Cup trial it was 4-4 and in the nsw cup backup trial Penrith with the biggest junior nursery in the country flogged us but in the other Junior trial where we player our best juniors we were up 22-0 at half time. Its 3 trial really and no known injuries to anyone who could play nrl

I only caught about 15 mins of the 1st half sounds like a blessing, Walters looked ok in dummy half Musgrove was aggressive and powerful any other positives?
And what I saw of Reynolds was gash seems like he didn’t improve on that.

You named it bra.

Douhei was great.
Matheson Johns looks a good prospect and punched on...

What you said and that's all really

Johns looked a bit one dimensional. He is a strong runner, quick enough but needs to be able to set up his winger.

Exactly. Looked great carting the ball up, broke plenty of tackles. But I read a couple say "sign him up" after that performance which is a bit premature. I don't recall him ever passing the ball, not that he was ever in a position to do so with how we attacked.

I remember playing Parra in a trial one year. All our big guns played and they beat us 30-0 or something. All my Parra mates were giving it to me. Turns out season proper we finished top 4 with Parra nowhere to be seen. Don’t be surprised if we get beaten by the Warriors too. Same thing happened last year when they beat us convincingly and took home nothing but pride. A few weeks later in round 2 we touched them up and took home the 2 points ?

very much a trial to see how the new recruiters and the possibles and probables were progressing.

JRay is not FG anymore, he was out of touch with the game and was playing in his head, kicking early on a 7 tackle set?? Not a 9 Neither and unless something changes I can’t see him in FG.

Musgrove was aggressive in defence and demanded attention when he had the ball in his hands but didn’t seem like he was making meters, not sure if any stats were kept from the game - younger version of Packer.

Talau not quite ready for first grade has potential but his d needs work. I can’t see him challenging for first grade spot at this stage and will only play if we have injuries.

AD was fair his positioning was good but never looked like he was going to break the line when returning the ball. Didn’t see him playing much support but there wasn’t much to support. He will be decent but imo anyone expecting him to make a massive impact to our game maybe disappointed. I hope I’m wrong.

Walters was good just needs to calm down and play with the team, defended well, made some great first contact and front on tackles.

The Other other johns boy maybe a wing option reminded me of Michael Hancock.

There were some promising forwards. Playing I couldn’t make out who they were the stream was poor and the commentary was delayed but there was a few hard running and defending players in the pack.

Some of the young backs that were out there in the last 30 mins are not fg ready, in fact to me our backline looked like it was made up of players with the body shape of hookers not centres and wingers. They were short and slow compared to to the pamfers backline which was when the score got out of hand.

The young kid With headgear who wants to be a fullback, he got the right advice from his previous club his not a fullback. The game has changed and will change again this year we need height and speed.

Score line wasn’t good but there some positives out of the game. My understanding is next weeks team will be a stronger side and we will get a better gauge of how we maybe placed but it’s still only a trail.
