@jirskyr " Plenty of pundits call us Wests as well as “the Tigers”." You could count the number of times that has happened in the last 20 years on one hand. Its either Tigers or Wests Tigers very rarely just Wests. But that is not really the point. You say Balmain are virtually left with nothing and in reality that is right but in the perception of other fans and a lot of the media its all Balmain. You have morons like Roach who continually call the team Balmain - and no one pulls him up. And he is not the only one who does it. And that's what upsets most ex magpie supporters. Its the same with the spiritual home ground rubbish. Leichhardt is not Wests Tigers spiritual home ground. We have so many home grounds how can one be a spiritual one. It was Balmains spiritual home ground - and yet this rubbish keeps getting trotted out every time we play there.

I don't really care if the magpie is on the jersey or not, We are Wests Tigers and its a great brand. This whole proposal is about strengthening that brand and also as a business decision by WA to increase their assets. But to make this a great brand this bs of a rebadged Balmain has to stop - and I will continually call people out on it.

Warren Smith always calls us Wests when he calls our games on Fox..granted he is one of a few...but makes a point of it especially when we play at Campbelltown..he gets it..

Its like when the WTs play at LO,its Balmains spiritual ground...
When WTS play at Campo it is Wests home ground after LIDCOMBE..
I love both grounds and they both feel home to me...

ps not going for the home grounds argument,we have had plenty of them...

Apropos of nothing, Pratten Park was my favourite home ground. It was a lovely little ground to watch the game. It was Wests' home ground from 1912 - 1966.

Used to go there with my father to watch Wests play rugby league and cricket.

I actually think that is overstated, I think it is said because it is the oldest home ground we still play at. I think if we still used Lidcombe or Pratten oval then they would be referred to in the same way. I honestly haven't heard anyone call us Balmain in a long time!

@cochise he has completely blown a gasket over an in joke I made to a friend - going all out and gunning for Balmain supports, we are all WestsTigers DP u bloody fool, and also sensationalising his own feelings and thoughts to the detriment of almost all others In the thread . One of the few divisive comments made and proves that it is really Magpie fans who (although not many) are still agitating !

@MAGPIES1963 thank you so
Much for the post. A very drunk, tongue in cheek response from me last night that was not warranted . Cheers

The past is the past i guess... balmain will not be coming back...unless someone here has invented time travel

The thing is that neither Balmain or Western Suburbs are not coming back.

They are Wests Tigers now and that is the team we follow.

I havnt heard Roach refer to the team as Balmain recently, but understand that would be irritating if he did, for not only WTs supporters but also old Magpie supporters. Equally I have found Roy Masters articles to be divisive and very anti the Balmain side of the JV. Old habits die hard I guess.

Yeah I haven't heard anyone call us Balmain for at least 15 years I reckon. They did used to do it a lot in the first 5 years or so.

And I reckon @diedpretty is pretty off the mark, especially in assuming to understand or summarise the perception of other fans and media. Everyone knows the team is Wests Tigers, everyone knows it's a JV of Magpies and Balmain, but apart from that you can't assume to speak on behalf of what "other fans" think. Balmain is a relic and anyone under 20 years of age wasn't even alive when the Balmain Tigers existed as a first-grade club.

I agree with Geo that I notice some commentators intentionally call us "Wests" and that is cool, because we are. But also, the tendency is to call most teams by their mascot and not their geography, so I would submit that "Tigers" is more commonly used than Wests, but no more so than "the Bulldogs" vs "Canterbury" or "the Raiders" vs "Canberra" or "the Sharks" vs "Cronulla-Sutherland".

Like others have said, you can understand the sentimentality of Leichhardt Oval amongst general rugby league supporters, due to it's long history not just associated with Balmain and Wests Tigers, but all the other matches played there like Panasonic Cups, the original NSW-QLD interstate matches and the fact that it is an old-style boutique ground, that doesn't really exist any more. LO has hosted the most professional rugby league matches of any active ground in Australia.

Lastly towards @diedpretty I don't think it's a rebadged Balmain at all. I was just saying to @MAGPIES1963 that as much as I understand some folks miss their old Magpie, I miss Balmain too, but I don't regret any decision the merger has taken and I support a full merger of the clubs and junior leagues. Yes it's a Tiger but there is as much, if not more, Wests blood in the club now and that can't really ever change, because after this Balmain will essentially cease to exist.

G'day @Tigerboy: when you said "MAGPIES and I know each other" I hope you aren't referring to me, cause I certainly don't know you. And I think you saying to @diedpretty "maybe you'd better DieNow" is deplorable, and I am very surprised the "ministrators haven't deleted your post.

@MAGPIES1963 we’ve spoken on here before many times, under my previous user: Tigger... I also know the Magpies as in have worked with Juniour rl admin out in those areas and have seen the great influence of both sides of the club in bringing along the best juniors - as well as finally getting the correct people in positions of power throughout the span of our great supporter base . I believe I’ve been misinterpreted in saying “sucked in” when rather what I should’ve typed (for lack of being sober) is that you must suck it up... just like every single other poor soul who has followed either club from day dot . It’s a very different landscape nowadays and this effort by the Magpies and Ashfield to secure the future of the great Wests Tigers is a move that simply must be commended by all within the club and all who claim to be even the most rusted on, die hard fans of either club . Simply no need for anymore of the them vs US debate and it really puts rocks in my socks mate , sorry for the initial post but not sorry to the user who randomly took issue with my comment to you and decided to call me I believe “deplorable” and needing moderation.... where I feeel that’s a great reason for our forum being such a place of esteemed debate and great minds usually thinking well-reasoned out ideas . Unfortunately, last night my post was well & truly not on the money and for that I do apologise. Take it with a grain of salt old madpie , you are a beloved member of our club as much as any other !!!

Mate, honestly sorry if I’ve offended in any way! Don’t really understand/see where anybody on THIS thread or *otherwise* is actually doing that and attempting to enrage Magpies diehards.... that’s just not at all what it’s about and I find the comment by you itself to be decisive if a little bit hasty... don’t you want a secure vision going forward? Financially and logistically?

On the off chance that anyone under the age of 40 cares in 2030, I'll proudly tell my kids that Balmain were a great club and meant a lot to me and most of their family.

I'll also tell them Wests are our family and if people can have two dads, why the hell can't a footy club be proud of two histories?

No offence to anyone with the above comment, my point is no one in the future will care about this. As long as WT survives in Sydney then I'll remain proud of both my Wests and Balmain brethren.

People on here continually misunderstand what ex magpie supporters are on about. It is a very very small minority that want the tiger replaced by the magpie. The majority of ex magpie supporters have accepted the JV. The gripe is the lack of recognition that Wests are part of the JV. Still after 20 years we have some in the media still calling the team balmain. The colours are always referred to as black and orange. Leichhardt is always referred to as the spiritual home. There are a few on this forum who continually put the boot in to ex magpie supporters wearing there Victa jerseys to games but waft on about how great it is to see Phillip's jerseys on the hill. When someone tries to point out these things they are called a dinosaur or as tiger boy posted " sucked in". Such a derogatory and inflammatory remark allowed to go unchecked. Snake posts that he has friends who will vote against the proposal and everyone runs around crying that the sky is falling.
People on here keep saying it's all about Wests Tigers and so it should be. But if you really believe that start calling out those who perpetuate that it's really just Balmain.

It's all I heard in the early days.
"Balmain putting no money in, make it the magpie again since it's our money"
It's so toxic on L.U that I don't bother with that forum anymore.
Still a few of them lingering on this forum. They know who they are.

Without each other, both sides of the JV wouldn't have anything to cheer.
I came to terms with that in 1999.

You've obviously got me mixed up with someone else @Tigerboy: re your "we've spoken on here before many times" I have NEVER spoken with you under any username.
As you say I have, please produce the evidence, as I don't appreciate being accused of something I haven't done and particularly when it's presented in such an ordinary and cheap manner by you.
