Hope Burgess enjoys missing the finals every year.

Cronulla also look like a strong team who has bought wisely.

not too sure about that mate. they have bought quite a few players but most of them seem to be fringe firstgraders…

Fringe first graders you say? Like Geoff Daniella, Tame Tupou, Mitch Brown and Arana Taumata?

Against Adam Cuthbertson, John Morris, Dean Collis, Ian Donnelly, Broderick Wright, Paul Aiton & Albert Kelly.. not bad.

lol tigers havent made the finals in 4 years and south will be stronger than us next year look how they went tonight with half a team so i think him and souths will go ok

True. But I'd just like to add to that, Dragons are pretenders. Eels will beat em next week too.

well all those players are fringe firstgraders.

cuthbertson has potential though...

i don't think tupou will ever be the same with all his injuries. he isn't even signed for next year anyway

It may not look like it on the points table, but we are a hell of a lot closer to finals footy than Souths.

No 3/4s, one decent half, one decent hooker and a good forward pack. Dreadfully imbalanced team. I find it extraordinary they are going so hard after a proper despite signing Taylor.

we are exactly the same distance away from finals football as souths are.
making the finals is either a yes or no. You can;t be a little bit pregnant you can;t be sort of in the finals.
Why someone like Burgess would even vaguely consider either club is beyond me.
If he has any brains he'll cancel the whole deal and stay in England.

I think a lot of it has to do with his age and being involved in a prop 'tandem'. I.e. Burgess and Dave Taylor together.

If fit and motivated, those two could be seriously unstoppable.

I am genuinely suprised that people are taking Crowes word on the negotiations with Burgess.

It may very well come off but am I the only one who upon hearing Crowe talking about Burgess being "a man of his word" that it was bullying tactics against a younger man inexperienced in the world of contract negotiations? It's not like Crowe isn't a known blowhard and bully now is it?

As I said would not be suprised if it comes off for the Bunnies but taking the word of a vested interest party with utter silence from Burgess in real terms is a bit idiotic.

I was thinking the same thing. There has been no quotes from burgess at all just Crow saying that theres an interest.

I am going off the word of a mate who is (very) closely connected with Leeds.

Leeds also want him from what I've been told (and his brother is there) but believe he's 100% committed to going to the NRL.

People also need to remember that Burgess is contracted for another 15 months. To be released, his team WILL need to be compensated.

This is where it gets complicated. Whilst under contract, his club will expect a significant transfer fee. Stuart Fielden moved for around 400 000 POUNDS, so you'd expect Burgess to be worth more. If he goes to another UK SL team, his club will benefit dramatically more than if leaves to go the NRL (no transfer fees). Someone is going to have to offer something a bit out of left field. Crowe can do that through sponsorship etc. Example, he could have the studio producing Robin Hood provide a shirt sleeve sponsorship for Bradford for 400 000 pounds quite easily and legitimately claim it's promoting the film. He's getting 30 million for the movie + the movie itself is budgeted near 100 million…a small sponsorship wouldn't be hard to justify.

He's a good owner. Kind of wish he was a Tigers supporter

Any transfer fee paid should be included in their cap. Thats the bottom line

And we all know that's not how it always works mate. There's a million ways around the cap, a lot of them completely legitimate.

Crowe's message to Souths and NRL crystal clear

August 29, 2009

With his club set to miss the finals again, Russell Crowe spoke to Will Swanton.

Russell Crowe sits down. All rise. A great and passionate Australian is in the house. He orders coffee, an espresso. The quickest type of caffeine hit. If only South Sydney's 21st premiership could kick in so fast.

''G'day guys, how are ya?'' he asks.

Everyone nods, muffled laughter, a lone voice says, ''Good, thanks.''

The Great and Passionate Russell Crowe fills the room. He speaks of Souths and rugby league. His message to NRL players: like it or not, you are role models. To Souths supporters: hold tight, oh ye faithful, good times are a coming - as is Great Britain forward Sam Burgess if everything goes according to the master plan. To coach Jason Taylor: you have my unequivocal support. To his Rabbitohs players: men, I love you like I once loved Dean Widders, but missing the finals is not good enough.

The Great And Passionate Russell Crowe became a co-owner of Souths three years ago. If we remember correctly, and we occasionally do, he wanted a premiership this season. He denies making that three-year ultimatum - his most famous alleged quote apart from ''On my command, unleash Roy Bell'' - but he clearly has little interest in continued mediocrity. There's not enough space on this page to run everything he said, more's the pity, so let's roll the tape and amplify the highlights before Souths tackle the Dragons at ANZ Stadium tonight.

The Great and Passionate Russell Crowe on the NRL's off-field scandals:

''The NRL is learning just how strong they have to be and just how tight they have to keep things. That benefits everybody, particularly with sports where a front page of the wrong tone can affect how people feel about what they're going to do that weekend, or how they might spend their money. The more we focus on teaching players the way forward, and how they are to be in public and emphasising the fact they are role models whether they like it or not. We need to build the relationship between the players and the community. Every time something comes up like that, it affects all of us, it affects all clubs. The more effort and energy we can expend on getting that sort of stuff out of our game …''

On wanting a premiership this year:

''I never said that. You guys can twist that any way you want. I want to win every year. There's not a single game, not a minute of a situation with South Sydney that goes past where my principal instinct is anything other than winning. Missing the finals is not good enough, it's just not good enough and it's not what we're geared to do. But there's another guy around that I know is as absolutely focused on winning as I am. His name is Jason Taylor. We have a lot of things to do and we will continue to do that, step by step. We're getting there. This season is the first time Souths have scored more than 500 points in a season. There's been a lot of progress. People who can read the game and see the game, they can see we will get there, step by step. Gigantic process - I can't remember in my lifetime when we beat Eastern Suburbs twice in a season. What we want to achieve is to be a regular competitive powerhouse in the NRL.''

**On wining and dining Burgess to lure him from Bradford:\
\
''Sam doesn't drink, definitely eats. We had a chat but there was a group of other players there as well, including Dean Widders. I got to meet Sam's mum. He's very keen to join South Sydney. He has one green eye and one red eye already. For example, he's a big fan of [Souths recruit] Dave Taylor. He's also a big fan of Chris Sandow and Issac Luke. He wants to be able to learn from blokes that he rates. It's not a done deal by any means but sometimes it just requires a shoe salesman like me to come along and help them through the door.''**

With that, he gets up from his seat and walks out a door of his own. The room feels empty again.

Sorry but i read this in the other thread… though it should be over here too...
_For example, he's a big fan of [Souths recruit] Dave Taylor. He's also a big fan of Chris Sandow and Issac Luke. He wants to be able to learn from blokes that he rates._

Chris Sandow Vs Marshall (or for that matter Moltzen) are you kidding me…
Issac Luke Vs Farah... do i really need to compare the two?

Rusty... get a grip these two blokes surely couldn't lure him to the club... that's pathetic... if he does sign for Souths... it will be through dodgy payments, surely their cap CANNOT allow someone of his caliber through, not the chance to play alongside such 'talent' bahhh...

If a sponsorship agreement is made, it is valued and then added to the cap… so for it not to be added into the cap is completely **illegitimate**. There is noway in the world souths could afford a payout, plus his salary given their current roster and the players coming in! It's a farce, should it happen!
