THE 4......THREAD

Well if I were in charge what I would be doing is…...
1\. Sign Tedesco. He is a million dollar man.
2\. Sign Woodsy.
3\. Sign Brooks. If we lose him, then we will have Ranking to play half?
4\. Finally Moses - would not pay overs for him. In fact I would not be concerned if he leaves. His Uncle will make sure he gets the best possible deal. I would rather invest and bring back Te Maire Martin can kick accurately, we would not be any worse off and would be at a lower cost. TMM I believe will be the new JT (Thurston) in the very near future. I could be wrong, time will tell.

I would have an idea in my head of what I think they are worth, what the open market likely prices them at and go in with an offer that aligns with that and if they are not prepared to accept, start looking at who else is on the open market and what they would likely command.

I think in terms of what they are worth I would have Tedesco valued at a lot more than the other, then Moses, Woods (while he is the captain, front rowers generally do not earn what playmakers do), Brooks. None would be looking at pay cuts, but rises on current deals would be minimal for a couple.

I heard Woodsy being interviewed tonight on MMM drive time…Gee these Guys contradict themselves...
On the one hand he said how sick he is of the Tigers being in the spotlight again with the contract talk of the "big 4"...how he hoped after the Farah gate of 2016 the WT would have an easier time in the media hyperbole of 2017...then he went on to say he is in no hurry to sign the next deal that he instructed his manager to give him space so he can enjoy the off season blah blah.,,,,hello Woodsy..

What I picked up:

1) At no stage did he say he wants to stay a Tiger.
2) He said he has to talk to his wife and family as the next contract he signs is important.
3) Completely contradicted himself about being sick of all the media hype yet only feeds it.
4) I'm convinced all 4 are being fed lines on what to say to the media by their Manager.
5) I hate player managers!.

Pretty sure everyone knows Brisbane will be needing a halfback next year and all the press talks about is how we'll likely lose a player.
The journo would have rung and asked how he thought Brooks would go in their colours to fill some space in the paper and hope for a headline..
Elias just told him what he thought…. and he obviously thinks Bennett, rather than Taylor, would bring out the best in him.
Nothing sinister in it.

Would give Moses away for free before losing Tedesco.
Moses seems to have that super-cocky attitude where everything is about himself, ego seems to run the show with him from an outsider's viewpoint. Would be stoked if he continued his gradual improvement from the back end of last year and played his career out with our club but he really seems to have the my-dumps-don't-stink attitude that will see him go to the highest bidder IMO.
Would like to be proven wrong but I think Woods and Ted are very much shorter odds to be long term Tigers than what Moses is.

Think it is a desired attitude FTB.

If you take away Moses's cocky attitude and ego, and the confidence to back yourself that it brings to the table - what are you left with….. I'll tell you

BROOKS (who would you rather sign)

It's interesting isn't it.
I get the feeling with the Benny article and all the talk from Moses about the tigers having a battle to keep all 4, that he wants to be the playmaker of the team with a supporting 6.
I think at this stage Luke is the more composed of the 2 however Moses does have it in him to be a genuine No 7.
I know Moses is only fit to clean his shoes at this stage in his career but I see moses as having a similar path to Thurston.
They would have went though the similar debate about size etc but the thing that makes them most alike is the ability of both to play genuinely 6 or 7.
So my piece with saying this is, it took the Cowboys a very long time to find the right balance for Thurston with supporting playmakers as he is in every play, he really dominates the team, which is great but difficult.
I see something very similar happening at the Tigers if Moses was given full rein (Brooks moves on).
It's going to be a tricky balance to get and I'm still not convinced moses has the game management skills down pact yet.
Probably have to go back and watch the couple of games where Brooks and Moses were not lining up alongside each other and see who controls the team better at this stage in their careers.
On Brooks too, with the right coaching and by that I mean mentoring as his skill set is already through the roof, he has the potential to a be a very good halfback.

Benny Elias says Luke Brooks would be the perfect replacement for Ben Hunt

NSW Origin great Benny Elias says Tigers young gun Luke Brooks could be a superstar signing for a Broncos club that doesn’t appreciate Ben Hunt.

Elias, a former Wests Tigers director, applauded Hunt for signing a $6 million deal with the Dragons, claiming the Broncos don’t truly value his skill set that steered the club to the 2015 grand final.

Tigers duo Brooks and Mitchell Moses are the two most promising halves off-contract at a time when Broncos coach Wayne Bennett is weighing up how best to replace Hunt next season.

The Tigers are battling salary-cap pressures as they fight to retain their Big Four of Moses, Brooks, James Tedesco and Aaron Woods.

Hunt will leave the Broncos for St George Illawarra at the end of the season.
There is a sentiment one player must go and Elias concedes Bennett could turn the 22-year-old Brooks into an NRL superstar.

“Luke would be a fantastic signing for the Broncos,” said Elias, the uncle of Brooks’ halves partner Moses.

“Look, I hope Luke stays at the Tigers because he has the best years ahead of him, but with Mitchell, they are the best young playmakers on the market.

“Under Wayne Bennett, Luke would be an absolute superstar for the Broncos.

“I’m a big fan of him, he’s a terrific kid.

“Luke Brooks reminds me a lot of Ben Hunt. They are similar in the way they play, they are similar in stature, their footballing qualities are very similar so if Wayne can get him at a cheaper rate than Ben Hunt, it’s a good business deal.”

Elias, a veteran of 22 Origin matches and 14 Tests, scoffed at suggestions Hunt has never recovered from his kick-off blunder in Brisbane’s grand-final loss to the Cowboys.

Hunt has copped brickbats from Broncos fans, largely over his inconsistent kicking game, but Elias believes the Brisbane No. 7 will be sorely missed.

“To be honest, I think he is under-appreciated at the Broncos,” the Balmain legend said.

“I’m surprised they lost Ben, he’s a great player, I’m a really big fan of his.

“I don’t know Ben personally, but every time I watch him play I admire his skills and his humility. The Broncos should never have lost him, but the Dragons needed a halfback and Hunt will deliver for them.

“The Broncos now have to look at the market.

“Luke would perfectly complement Anthony Milford. Miflord can do the fancy stuff, while Luke can steer the team around.

“Brooks didn’t have his best season last year but he has matured. He understands the pressures of the NRL and last year he learned a lot about what’s required to succeed.

“It’s a big ask for the Tigers to keep all four guys, so a young player like Luke would only get better under Wayne Bennett at the Broncos.”

  Thought BDB had been quiet…

FFS benny. Hasn't the guy run the club into the ground enough with Rozelle pty Ltd. If he has any sort of life membership, I hope it was confiscated a long time ago.

I also took hook line and sinker. Throw me into the naivety basket as well - it is a shame you have to be amongst such hopeless characters.

Brisbane and Bennett also understands that with Milford ,Boyd and McCullough already entrenched in the spine they don't necessarily need to go out and spend huge bucks trying to pry Brooks from the WT's , especially when he is still really unproven as a marquee player at this stage

Don't be surprised if Ash Taylor or Nikorima ends up filling the position at a far lower price …..

You don't always need to get the best that money can buy , they just need to gel well and play off the back of that talented forward pack they have

That's the key in this case

Good post Happy. The Broncs have a good forward pack and Maguire is one forward we could really do with at the WTs. When we speak of our halves, the performance of some of our forwards really need to be considered.

Due to salary cap constraints very few clubs carry marquee players in both the six and seven. Most seem to have a standout and a foil. Of course there are exceptions, cowboys and warriors come to mind but when you look at the Sharks they got the job done with Townsend and Maloney. You would imagine Maloney was on serious money but I guess Townsend would have been on 300g or less.

To me there is a compelling argument to direct some spine money towards the resigning the likes of Nofo and the purchase of a quality back rower even if it means missing out on signing one of the halves

Do you also seriously think Elias picked up the phone and rang a nobody at the Courier Mail just to diss the Tigers?
I worked at newspapers and dealt with them and other media for around 40 years so have a 'reasonable' idea how they work and how journalists go about chasing stories.
Plenty of people don't like Elias (maybe for good reasons) but journos know he's always available for a comment and can turn a few of his thoughts about one thing into a headline about something else.
On topic - hope we can keep all the boys together.

12 months is a long time in sport, but Ash Taylor's market value would definitely be higher than Brooks' at the moment.

Every sports has its person to ring for a furore

Jeff Thomson and Dean Jones for cricket for example

Benny and Tommy are some of league's go to men

give teddy woods and Moses what they want they deserve every dollar they get however it is a gamble throwing 600k to Moses when in reality he has had 1 good season I think if brooks is going to stay he is going to have to accept the 350k the tigers are going to offer him for that reason he might take an offer else where. brooks has not proved himself the way Moses has.id love them all to stay but will be content with woods teddy and Moses resigning

lol… Simona is on $350k, so I say its safe to say Brooks will be $600+

I've started to look closer on the whole big 4 contract situation, and I've come to terms that the starting 5 rounds will either make or break our season.

Depending on how we start, for example if we have a solid start and win let's say 4 out of the first 5 games. I reckon Teddy, Moses, Woods and Brooks will go bang bang bang and sign extensions depending on if the money is right and it'll really set a tone for the rest of the season and if Brooks can have a solid season I can see us making the top 4.

But if we have a bad start to the season, all the media will be on Taylor and it'll cause a massive distraction to our season and the big 4 will be reluctant to sign.

That's my analysis on the whole situation.
