Wests merging with Canberra?

When Wests and Balmain became a joint venture didn't they agree to keep the NSW Cup teams seperate? How can there be a Wests Tigers NSW Cup team without one side of the joint venture agreeing to it? Now Wests Magpies wont have any NRL contracted players and will struggle every year all because Balmain weren't able to fund their own team. It's crap. Atleast the Wests side is standing up for themselves and not bending over like Balmain. If I was from the Balmain side of the joint venture I'd be ashamed.

Pretty simple really alien, one side is prepared to merge under the WT name as Staks alluded to, the other isn't, and that's why Balmain will get the WT contracted players. If this upsets you, take it up with the Wests heirarchy. Nothing to be ashamed about from Balmain's perspective.

That's how you feel. I'm sure there are alot of Balmain supporters who want a Balmain team in the NSW Cup.

Alien it only would happen with a majority board vote. For that to happen one Magpie had to vote for this to happen (assuming it actually does).

Regardless I feel it is a good idea moving forward. It makes me sad if the Balmain Tigers cease to exist in State Cup but I honestly believe a unified structure is the best way to clarify and grow the pathway to the NRL. Again this is dependant on it happening and the finalised structuring assuming it goes ahead. Growth and moving forward are what any professional sporting body should be about

Regardless I will still be able to follow Balmain in Harold Matthews and SG Ball so the tradition will continue.

I sincerely hope this is all part of a larger move for a National Reserve Grade competition and the re-establishment of Reserve Grade a sa second tier

For mine Alien, Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs both ceased to exist when they merged at the top level. We've already both enjoyed premiership success at the top level, which under the old guards I can say with a great deal of certainty wouldn't have happened. The tradition will always be there, you can still buy the jerseys and the names are engraved in history, both in the NSWRL and NRL.

I would still like to see both the Tigers and Maggies bouncing around in State Cup, but if the path lies with a merger team at state level I would be happy with that also. Anything that secures the future of the Wests Tigers brand I will support.

idc what happens as long as

1\. there is a wests tigers team in the nrl.
2\. an awesome secong grade side for plenty of depth. if it involves merging wests and balmain, wests and canberra wateva. (even though i have no idea how that would help the wests tigers)

Awesome news….

Is that a joke Geo or are you seriously happy that the Magpies would be a feeder club for Canberra - WT couldn't seriously allow one of the biggest junior catchments to be taken over by another club.

What worries me is that by further alienating the juniors of the Campbelltown district, we run the risk of ending up a club that doesn`t care about producing it`s own junior talent and instead ends up being a blood sucking leach like the Roosters and now like how the Rabbitohs have become.
I`m very proud of the fact that the Wests Tigers don`t go out of their way to poach players away from their clubs and have proved this season that they can still be very successfull in doing so.
I really hope they don`t plan on changing this as i`d feel disgraced at following sides such as the Roosters and Rabbitohs and the way they go about poaching players from other clubs!!!

you miss the point vicious, kids in cambo associate themselves with that Balmain lot these days.
Juniors coming through now would have no memory of the Magpies and thus have no association with them, all they care about is playing for the Tigers. Merging state cup would exacerbate this.

THIS would be the argument that some Wests guys would be putting forward, saying that keeping the magpies logo alive via Canberra is better than killing it for good. This argument is also flawed and was no doubt hatched on the pokie room floor of Wests Campbelltown between two geezer downing a pony of Victor Bravo.

Balmain is alive…
The Magpies are alive...
...and last time i checked they were one point shy of a grand final.

Confusion and selfishness shouldn't rule the day and this proposal should be torpedoed ASAP, otherwise Wests should give up their claim to Campbelltown.

I don`t think I am missing the point. YES the Wests Magpies and Balmain Tigers are now a fading memory, that`s not what i`m talking about.
By having the Wests Magpies alive in Premier League it atleast gives the Wests Tigers representation once every two weeks in the Campbelltown region. Now i`m not worried about crowds, we all know that not too many people are interested in watching Premier League, i`m talking about the fact that the Wests Magpies playing regularly out of Campbelltown ensures that the young juniors of the Campbelltown region know that the Wests Tigers are truly their local side.
Take this away from them and watch how many youngsters from the Campbelltown region jump ship. Why should they show any loyalty if the Wests Tigers don`t want any senior side playing regularly out of the region ???

I`m not from the Campbelltown region, never have been from the Campbelltown region, but it makes no sense to me to deprive senior level football in such a growing region ???

So did Ryde Eastwood Leagues want to stop funding Balmain?

No.

Ryde Eastwood Leagues club are also a minor sponsor for Wests Tigers. It wouldn't be an imagination stretch to see the RE Club become a front or rear of jersey sponsor fr a State Cup side

If this happens then Western Suburbs should accept players from the Canberra NRL squad that don't make their 17 man first grade team because they would struggle without any NRL players. Then Western Suburbs would practically become a feeder club for Canberra. If this happens it's because Balmain are bending over for a few people at Camp Concord. What a disgrace. They should be ashamed of themselves. Atleast Western Suburbs are sticking up for themselves.

What's wrong with how it is now? Both Western Suburbs and Balmain were one win away from making the NSW Cup Grand Final and so were Wests Tigers. I'd rather have 2 strong feeder clubs than 1.

Do you honestly believe that there is no benefit to every fringe NRL player playing under the one structure and the one coaching oversight?

I don't buy the "if it aint broke don't fix it" mentality
