Video: Lodge harassed by random outside New York court

October 22, 2015 5:40am
By Steve Orme in New York

It was already a bad morning for disgraced former NRL player Matthew Lodge after he was slapped with four restraining orders and told to reappear in a New York court on February 5 – then this happened.

The 20-year-old is facing up to 25 years in prison after he was charged with first and second degree burglary over an alleged rampage in Manhattan late last week.
Lodge slapped with four restraining orders

Lodge appeared in court on Wednesday morning local time and was ordered to stay away from his four alleged victims.

As the clearly shaken former Melbourne and Wests Tigers prop left the New York Criminal Court flanked by a large media pack, one over-zealous local decided to audition as a reporter.

After loudly declaring the reporters 'scumbags', Lodge’s newest fan repeatedly asked his identity before the troubled prop escaped to safety in a New York cab.

Lodge, who's NRL career is all-but over after he was sacked by the Tigers, had his passport revoked and is not permitted to leave the U.S as he awaits his next appearance in court.

It's fair to say Lodge is in the hurt locker now, and there may be no way out of this for some time.

It's simply a respect thing.

Young people these days lack respect in so many ways. My belief is that it is poor parenting so it must be a generational thing, too.

My parents taught me respect and right from wrong. I have done the same with my 4 sons who are all adults now. I can honestly say we have all turned out ok.

I read today about owners of a cafe in North Sydney somewhere who had a playroom for kids. Sadly, they had to close it because parents let their kids run wild, drawing on walls, screaming relentlessly, taking patrons food. When staff politely asked for them to keep their kids quiet they were apparently abused or completely ignored.

Worst of all the parents changed nappies and left the dirty ones on the dining tables and left.

The cafe was losing patrons quick smart so they closed the kids room. As I said - no respect. Me, me, me attitude.

Too simple you guys. Be thankful your kids aren't ratbags, because sometimes it's just the kid, not the family.

By your argument, all the crims in Long Bay are the result of bad parenting? Or kids can blame their faults on the way they were raised?

You can't kick kids in the arse these days, BTW BP Tiger, good luck with your kids

Yes you bloody can. I will be. My old man did it and I turned out OK.

Did you?

Yes I did smartarse. I recognise the difference between behaving like a civilised human being and not so. My parents never had to belt me to do so, it was rarely a clip over the ear.

I will be surprised, if he doesn't spend more time in some sort of court appointed program or a correctional institution, as a result of his next court attendance.
When he finally leave USA, I doubt that he will ever be allowed to visit again.

whatevever sentence lodge receives in february is of course a deserved one.

the next three months waiting for him will be very long.

away from home,no christmas ,media focus etc

the next three months is his first punishment.

Lots of Gen Y bashing and generalising going on here.
Anybody would think there's not a person under the age of 30 with their head screwed on right.

You can call Matt whatever….stupid, reckless, criminal etc etc.

But when you hear his mothers distraught voice this morning, this is something that effects the family probably more than the individual. A parents worst nightmare is to see their kids make destructive choices in life.

Anyone off sound mind would not do the things Matt is doing at the moment......this is no excuse, he deserves to pay the price but lets hope the bloke can get some professional help because he obviously is in serious need of it.

Absolutely WT. I feel for his mum and dad. :frowning:

I think that the club has acted too hastily in dismissing Lodge. It's less than one week after an article appeared starting that Carney “the urinator”, is going to sue Cronulla for 3 million. The reason for the lawsuit is that he was sacked without a hearing. Just like lodge!

Its 2015, you cannot just sack players with mental health issues and wipe your hands clean of them. At the very least Lodge should have been given an opportuityto state his case. He may be the victim off having his drink spiked or maybe he simply forgot to pack his meds.

I in no way condone what this moron has done (he probably should have been sacked earlier). I just don't want this issue popping up again in 12 months because it was not dealt with in the proper manner. Immediate dismissal is the knee jerk quick fix band aid solution.

You think the club would learn. The axe has already fallen in the past month due to potential threats of constructive dismissal.

His contract has been torn up, but the club will offer him any other help he needs ( Mental health help, rehab etc) or so we've been told.

The club has a duty of care as his latest employer to offer as much support as he is entitled to. I hope the club offers it and he accepts it.

The one thing that astonishes me - to know end - is how common it has become in our sport that when someone young "gets caught" they almost immediately use mental health issues as their defense.

Im not for 1 second trying to diminish mental health issues, but again its become so common in our game that it now appears to be the GO TO defense for everyone getting "CAUGHT"
\
\
the usual media transcript goes something like this

"im playing first grade.
my dream since i was a kid.
earning good money doing the thing i love
im sorry that i was busted BUT its because i have mental health issues so can everyone feel sorry for me and allow me to continue to play
i promise i wont get "caught" again.
\
\
and as for todd carney….. i actually think his law suite against the club might backfire on him.
They may not have given him the opportunity to front the board - which he states - but surely there was something in his contract about a small thing called "bringing the club / game into disrepute.

he was smiling / posing for the camera

well the good thing is that he has been charged in the USA and he will get a jail term this time around, heres hoping.

Odds are, he won't do prison time. His high profile criminal lawyer would see to that.
Also the fact that it's his first offence there in the USA, would see him get off.

He had only been there a couple of days, so you would certainly hope it was his first offence TM. Trouble is he committed another few criminal acts after the first one, thus an extended stay is very likely.
